Mike revolutionized the sport. He never really got the credit he deserved because so many people thought body boarders were dudes who couldn't stand on a surf board. I was raised in Kona and in the early 80's Mike Stewart and Rock Kahele were the hardest charges on the west side. Mike would tweak his boogie boards and the designs and test the in huge surf at Magic Sands and Puako. Rock Kahele would get the biggest waves and deepest barrels on a McDonald's tray. Both of these guys were fearless

Mike Stewart is THE bodyboarding pioneer. His greatness cannot be disputed. Sure there are some bodyboarders out there these days with great talent, but back in the day he was the king. He can still give the young guns a run for their money. THE greatest surfer of any kind.
Mike Stewart is the most dominant competitive bodyboarder ever. Period. He is also likely to have spent more time in the barrell than anyone else, ever. If I was young and I didn't know these things, I might think Mike is overrated. But as a person who grew up watching him progress the sport his, importance shouldn't be underestimated. He invented, among other things, the hand position riders use (inside hand on the nose, outside hand on the rail).
Mike isn't really spectacular to watch, but he's the most solid on a bodyboard. Just amazing technique and ability ... if he were younger and able to get the air that Hubb can, he'd be at the top still.
I think it is a question of heritage. Mike Stewart has been bodyboarding for 30 years... he has pioneered much of what is happening in bodyboarding today.... some examples: 1987 Surfer Magazine (not Bodyboarding) ran an article Entitled "Is Mike Stewart the best SURFER in the World?" it was a 9 page article. Early in the 90's he predicted that the future of bodyboarding will revolve around the 360 (proved true). He broke open a path which all Bodyboarders now seem to take for granted...
The Man's 45 years old. Compare apples to apples. It like having Tom Curren (2nd most tour wins) against current top 10 surfers and saying he's overated cause he doesn't do kurrupt flips, liens, etc. Pay homage to legends who's still out there getting perfect 10s.
Not overrated in my opinion. First and only sponger to pull in Jaws, 9 time world champ, and respected by north shore heavies like perry dane and eddie rothman. Every sponging vid in the 90's had to have a stewart segment or else it wouldn't sell.

Mike Stewart is the most dominant competitive bodyboarder ever. Period. He is also likely to have spent more time in the barrell than anyone else, ever. If I was young and I didn't know these things, I might think Mike is overrated. But as a person who grew up watching him progress the sport his, importance shouldn't be underestimated. He invented, among other things, the hand position riders use (inside hand on the nose, outside hand on the rail).

Mike isn't really spectacular to watch, but he's the most solid on a bodyboard. Just amazing technique and ability ... if he were younger and able to get the air that Hubb can, he'd be at the top still.

I think it is a question of heritage. Mike Stewart has been bodyboarding for 30 years... he has pioneered much of what is happening in bodyboarding today.... some examples: 1987 Surfer Magazine (not Bodyboarding) ran an article Entitled "Is Mike Stewart the best SURFER in the World?" it was a 9 page article. Early in the 90's he predicted that the future of bodyboarding will revolve around the 360 (proved true). He broke open a path which all Bodyboarders now seem to take for granted...

Not overrated in my opinion. First and only sponger to pull in Jaws, 9 time world champ, and respected by north shore heavies like perry dane and eddie rothman. Every sponging vid in the 90's had to have a stewart segment or else it wouldn't sell.

LOL KaY!!Skip and Hubbard do kill it, but they are the next generation of sponging. It's called progression and they better be better than Stewart (he's a least 10-15 years older than them). Judging and technicality was different then and stewart was the leading innovator.
Many 90s vid show stewart doing ARS, backflips, dabbling with front flips, and is own move the gyrol named after his leash. Hubbard,and Skip (especially him) would NOT say he's overrated.

Well, I think Guilherme Tâmega to be better than both Hubbard or Virtue... Mike Stewart is so good and has so great a style that even at his current age he is able to challenge people like Andre, King, Player, Tâmega, etc. As a waterman he is MUCH better than Hubbard or Virtue... as an acrobat he isn't... He got robbed in the final. It ALWAYS happens in Hawaii... We say here in Brazil that he has to kill all waves to score 8 or 8.5 points, while others, with smaller tube rides score 9 or 9.5. Have you watched the footage of previous Pipe comps? I would go back to 1994 and see each year. Then you can say to me that he was not robbed at many lots of times. Of course, we all agree that Mike is PERFECT in Pipe anyway! Aloha!

that fully deserves a 10, for everyone who is saying he couldve made more of the wave, id like to see you or anyone else for that matter go deeper than him at pipe. i think another reason it gets a 10 is, most guys, even on the pro circuit, wouldve probably just been trying to get out of that barrel alive caus of how deep it is, but mike went a step further and launched a perfect roll on exit
