Nothing better than taking a trip to Thunder Island,Going thru the Fresh Garbage and reminiscing about one of the greatest albums ever on ODE records. It's Spirit and I know you gotta hear it because I Got A line on You Babe.I remember playing all three of the above mentioned plus Jo Jo Gunne Run Run Run all I can say is WOW!!!
this GREAT SONG STILL PLAYED AROUND HERE AND IT'S EVEN MAKING A COMEBACK AS SUCH'. AT LEAST ONCE DAILY HERE IN SOUTHWEST MISSOURI. STILL A GREAT SONG.
@miketheshanmanmangan Yes, it's him! So glad he's still making music, seeing him on his "Thunder Island" tour in the 70's at the Santa Monica Civic is still on my top ten list of great live shows. Love all his stuff, what a treat to find it all here!
Yes it took great skill back in the day....Now the producer takes GOD knows what and makes a tack...stick whatever is the fad of the day...Pro-tools and the sounds are warped into a vocal..No drummer or bass player needed...Don't need shit but a good looking singer...Rhianna can't sing shit...
Clear lyrics, great message, perfect time that climbs and climbs. Gimme that ole' time rock 'n roll. We loved it so, cause it took skill to produce such tight melodies that would move you creatively. It gave us something. Kids today have it tough, they've got no hope and their music is just plain awful-violence, disparaging women, and pride.Gets' it's take off TV.
Had the pleasure of seeing them do this LIVE in Phoenix at a club called "Cowboys" (?) circa 1979, AMAZING performance. Their album "Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus" (which unfortunately does not include this song) is a tour de force of originality and great musicianship. That album includes Mr. Skin, a song mentioned by another poster. I've got it on vinyl and will never part with it. If you love this band, seek it out.
IMO, anyone who DOESN'T like this song is just flat out DEAF.
These guys were the best -- the very best that circa 1968 had to offer, and 1968 was by far the best year of that era. A lot of albums came out as "Spirit" albums, but the original and most prolific lineup consisted of: Randy California (guitar, vocals); Ed Cassidy (drums); John Locke (keyboards); Mark Andes (bass); Jay Ferguson (vocals, percussion). The original five did get back together in 1984 to produce "Spirit of '84" plus a few videos.
This is one of those songs that could never, ever be redone by any other group - this song totally belongs to Spirit and they just friggin' rock it all the way to Venus and back. Got to be one of the top10 rock songs of all time.
Yet another tune from a swinging and righteous decade. This tune had me jumpin' when I first heard it on WMMS (Cleveland, OH) back in '68 -- it still does. My great grand-kids dig this one too! Thanks to Randy, Jay, and company!
This is one of those songs I never get tired of listening to. Spirit did release another song a number of years after this one called "Mister Skin". It didn't get far on Bill Board top 40 but it was great too.
Randy California drowned in the ocean while rescuing his twelve-year-old son from a rip current near the home of Bernice Pearl at Molokai, Hawaii. He managed to push his son Quinn (who survived) towards the shore. A hero and a legendary guitarist.
back when getting high and good music came together and having fun meant you wouldn't get shot for being at a house party - fuck wheres that damn time machine !
Spirit was a bit obscure but way ahead of their time musically! Love them. They do remind me of my oldest brother who died in 1969. So fond memories I guess. but still think they we're kick ass!
its been a long time.this brings me back to the beach in Wildwood New Jersey.summer of 69 on vacation down from Quebec City. was a big radio hit there at the time.
Mrs. Clippit....... Gotta put your arms around me,With every bit of your love,If you know what to do I'll make love to you,Cause you got the right lines to make it through these times.I gotta line on you babe! wink wink!!
When I was a teenager we used to go to this place called the Lantern. They always had the bands playing out there for us.Spirit played there several times. I think they are from the Fort Wayne Indiana area. Did they form REO Speedwagon? My wife is a big spirit and and she said they did form REO Speedwagon. Anyway we love them and have their albums on vinyl. Far out, they were really groovy. LOL :-)
Graduated in 1971 and this band was the best! Great guitarist and harmonies as well. Love this era music. Wish we had a decent radio staion here in town that would play this 24/7, not 'Golden Oldies!'
this song cool but hers the thing you don't here it on classic rock ,don't here it on oldies, i think its kind of lost ,this song holds up today ,its just great rock
@MrNachoman22 Sounds like him but its not the same person the rare earth singer was a singing drummer randy california was a singing guitarist in spirit
SPIRIT by far, is the most underrated band of the 60s and 70s. Randy California (given that name by Hendrix himself) was a great guitar player and great man who died saving the life of his son. Why they are not in the Hall of Fame speaks volumes to the hypocrisy of that organization. I will always carry RC and Spirit in my heart.
This band was so far ahead of its time - seriously - listen to the lyrics of Fresh Garbage - it's so pertinent in today's world. Spirit really rocked this song - can't think of any other group today who could remake it any better than the fabulous original.
spacepatrolman is so right. The Moody Blues (remember "Go Now"?), BS&T, Johnny Winter and 10 Years After ("I'd Love to Change the World" with Alvin Lee) were so great. Living in the past is fun, and music like this takes me there. Thanks.
Randy's mentor and friend was Jimi Hendrix. I took my son to see Spirit in 1994 in Glendale. I'd seen them many times in the 60's. Randy jumped off stage while playing this song went face to face with my 16year old kid as if to say "check this out" and jammed. My son has never forgotten it and now he's a musician. ( what did I do? lol)
Whooooooo!! As a young girl back then, this may be the first song that ever made my, ummmm, "budding hormones" come out and created an interest in boys! ;)-
I missed out on this song originally because I was four when it came out. I didn't hear it until 11 years ago & loved it from that day. I can't believe Randy California was only 17 when he wrote & recorded this song! What a great talent! Too bad they turned down the invitation to perform at Woodstock. They would have received the fame they deserved much earlier in their careers.
This is a superb song – great guitar and vocals, bass that won’t quit, but I always loved the drums too. The drummer never intrudes on the other musicians but really adds to the sound – he just rolls and rolls and rolls all thru it. Course, so did we back then, ah the KSAN days.
Bottom line, this should have been a humongous hit – not just on the progressive rock stations. Only reached #25 on Billboard, c’mon!
OMG. Our HS band The Hodge played this motherfucker so well I can still taste it. Hall HS in West Hartford CT. Russell and Dave, Steve and that other mofo. Holy fuck! Apricot Brandy! Fuck Conard!
Last time I head this song, I had a full head of hair, waist was a 30, stayed out till 3AM 4 nights a week and partied with the boys.. now... life turned .. I am in bed at 10PM every night
Last night smoked a few dube's, drank a few beer and was out at 10;30. This morn was thinking the same thing. Used to just get going at 10. What the fuck happened? The brain still wants to party but the bod just can't hack it anymore. Ya man, those were fucken good ol days. Was good to be young then. Today, can't do shit anymore. God dam police state. Even here in Canada, the fucken Neo Cons are in power and doin the Republican thing, giving ya 6 months for just haven a dube.
@mkironman55 Join the revolution and get those squares out of office... OCCUPY! =D
Great tune, I'm 22 and just about everything I listen to falls between 1965 and 1972, I envy boomers for growing up during a time with such fantastic music.
I never found a song I liked to play more than this one.... probably about the 5th song I ever learned to play, and I'll likely be happily playing bass riffs to this for the rest of my life. Our first gig, all those years ago, was at the now closed Wilson Center, a high priced shrink facility for adolescents, in Faribault, MN. On Halloween night, no less! Between this, Peter Gunn, and Space Truckin', I played every note available on my old Jazz, and then some.
I played this song with a band in college. Now, 42 years later, I find out that Randy California was a year younger than me. Some guys got it, some don't.
I graduated from high school in 1969 and remember this song. It's as good now as it was then. Bands like Spirit came and went, but their music lives on.
@TheLawvan All smart people know two things: Sixties rock rules, and The Class Of '69 rules! I'm '69 also. First graduating class EVER from Pinole Valley High School in Pinole, Ca. sixtiesrockboys motto? Turn 60, look 40, act 30!
OOOOH, BABY! Love this old tune........Spirit was FANTASTIC and this still sounds as fabulous as it did when I was a teenager! WOW! Love it!!!!!!!!!! <3
November, 1968..Mekong Delta...gooks to the left ...gooks to the right...this song comes blarin' on, cutting thru the night like so many mortars....death, man...too heavy.
I love this song and remember it very well. Everything about this song is appealing. It is "easy on the ears" and makes one want to dance. Thanks for this post.
Now maybe you guitar players know. I once heard that the guitar the lead player used in this recording was a Sears Silvertone guitar...the kind that came with an amp built into the guitar case. Is that credible?
@56captvideo No, Danoelectro made a whole series of guitars for Sears. The entire line was called Silvertone. While Randy played one it was not the one that came with the amplifier case. You can see it on the other posting for I Got A Line On You where he is leaning out of a train.
God how I love this fucking song. The memories of my youth and the best of times. The chills and memories this song brings on are endless. I am 59 and can't believe how fast life has flown by. The songs of this era will live on forever so pure so innocent so great. Randy California and Spirit rock thank you for this song and all the memories Jbagasas THIS IS WHAT REAL MUSIC SOUNDS LIKE oh how I miss those days never forget my friends never forget. I GOT A LINE ON YOU BABE
i've read some of these comments and i think there was more competition back then, it seems nowadays they'll give anyone who can scream on American Idol a record contract
The most under rated band of the late 60's. Read about them on Wikipedia, search "Spirit band" and also "Randy California", it is a great story for those who don't know the genesis of Spirit., their ties to Led Zepplin, Woodstock, Jimi Hendrix, etc.
One of the best songs from my teen years and brings back the most specific time.place memories for me. LOVE this song! Too bad Randy "California" Wolfe died saving his son from drowning. A real shame. He was a talented guy.
@bls4591 It is a shame, but it says something about him, too. Dying while saving someone's life has to be the best way to go, and all the better if it's your own child.
Considering how great this record sounds with 60's recording equipment, I would love to hear how it would have sounded had it been recorded with late 20th century technology.
@Mickagume Better technology made music worse, not better. Truly creative people were always able to do more with less. Today's technology has allowed a lot of pretenders to become "artists".
true but also take into account how much technology has Allowed musicians to do. Even back in the 60's, music that we all love would not have been what it is w/o out the progression of technology...Jimi Hendrix, and all the Beatles' music, rubber soul and on was great with contribution of technology.
...I met the singer/guitar player at "on the Rocks" in LA in '78, Randy... I had come from Boston and been in LA 6 weeks or so...He said something like ... we went away, like the Beatles, the Mamas&Papas, 3 Dog Night, and the Doors plus Hendrix and Joplin... we worked our hearts out to send a mesage that wasn't to be recieved...PERIOD!

Great tune, I'm 22 and just about everything I listen to falls between 1965 and 1972, I envy boomers for growing up during a time with such fantastic music.

@mkironman55 Amen brother. Growing older, changes in the bod, culture, politics, music, all SUCK! However, I think they call that LIFE.

@dwightparker I am glad you got that guy straightened out. I was about to write to him when I saw your comment about the Dr. Sardonicus album.

I've always thought that song has one of the most perfect, controlled and melodic guitar leads ever.

I played this song with a band in college. Now, 42 years later, I find out that Randy California was a year younger than me. Some guys got it, some don't.

This is one of the great songs from an era that holds great memories and some horrible ones too. I salute the Vietnam Vets

I graduated from high school in 1969 and remember this song. It's as good now as it was then. Bands like Spirit came and went, but their music lives on.

@TheLawvan when it was 69 it was a very good year it was a very good year for spirit the moody blues bs&t johnny winter ten years after woodstock...

My 1st guitar was a Sears Silvertone--it was a great guitar, imo. Did the job nicely, especially for an 11 year old guitar novice.

Now maybe you guitar players know. I once heard that the guitar the lead player used in this recording was a Sears Silvertone guitar...the kind that came with an amp built into the guitar case. Is that credible?
56captvideo 9 months ago
@56captvideo No, Danoelectro made a whole series of guitars for Sears. The entire line was called Silvertone. While Randy played one it was not the one that came with the amplifier case. You can see it on the other posting for I Got A Line On You where he is leaning out of a train.

First saw Randy in that brief moment of time when he played in the "Blue Flames" with Jimmy James; opened for "Herman and the Hermits.'
Ullarsskald1989 11 months ago
The most under rated band of the late 60's. Read about them on Wikipedia, search "Spirit band" and also "Randy California", it is a great story for those who don't know the genesis of Spirit., their ties to Led Zepplin, Woodstock, Jimi Hendrix, etc.

One of the best songs from my teen years and brings back the most specific time.place memories for me. LOVE this song! Too bad Randy "California" Wolfe died saving his son from drowning. A real shame. He was a talented guy.
bls4591 11 months ago 17
@bls4591 It is a shame, but it says something about him, too. Dying while saving someone's life has to be the best way to go, and all the better if it's your own child.

Considering how great this record sounds with 60's recording equipment, I would love to hear how it would have sounded had it been recorded with late 20th century technology.
Mickagume 1 year ago 3
@Mickagume Better technology made music worse, not better. Truly creative people were always able to do more with less. Today's technology has allowed a lot of pretenders to become "artists".
57highland 10 months ago 3
@57highland
true but also take into account how much technology has Allowed musicians to do.
