Here is a video of a cruise ship with the same rough seas but with full enginer power and stabalizer control systems. Virtually unshakable. Youtube search video "Heavy seas on Diamond Princess cruise ship"

Cruise ships may appear top heavy but the engineers have designed the boat so that the center of gravity is at the lower part of the ship. Much of the upper space is open and made of lighter materials. This ship could list to a maximum angle of 60 degrees and recover but it would not be a pleasant experience for the passengers or crew. Just walking is challenging at 15 degrees. Voyager was able to partially restore power to two engines.

This is the cruise ship Voyager. The Voyager was hit by a storm about 100 km (60 miles) off Palma, Majorca. A giant wave smashed a bridge window knocking out the power to engines and stabalizer control systems. Basically was a cork bobbing in the water. Voyager experienced listing angles of up to 45 degrees because they were unable to turn the ship facing the waves and riding the swell. Most of the newer ships have secondary power control systems for stabalization.

Problem here is that the ship doesn't seem to be moving forward and the stabilizers don't appear to be working. Any modern ship these days is made to withstand seas like this, so there is really no inherent danger. As long as everyone is mustered and has a life jacket on, enjoy the ride, I say!

I was a Bering Sea crab fisherman for over 7 years and when I watch this vid.....that vessel rides mighty high in the water!! Our crab boats were able to flood our tanks, thus providing us with more ballast and making us less top heavy. I don't see any rolling chocks on this ship either. Rolling chocks help the side to side stability. This vessel is rolling WAY TO MUCH from side to side for the seas it is bucking into...IMO

Actually her engines failed hence she was drifting sideways in the trough instead of travelling forward through the waves. All 780 passengers stayed on board and a few had minor injuries. Some tugs went out from Palma to fetch her back. Not a major drama. Things like this happen all the time at sea. Ships are built to deal with worse than that

@sascia888 They're designed to do worse than that. But only with an engine running. When you get sideways in heavy seas your ship is fucked because you could roll. With the engine running you turn the craft into the waves to break them with your front end (what's that called in english?).

So this is a pretty dangerous situation. Not that bad, but if the ship is hitten with the right force at a time they could roll...they COULD roll.

Cruise ships aren't designed for heavy seas dude. Ballasting has nothing to do with being put into a situation outside of it's designed parameters. Not a design flaw either. This was an idiot captain, or a serious malfunction with very bad timing.

cruise ships are designed for passenger safety, and to pretend that engineers make an unsafe ship because "it's only a passenger ship" is ridiculous. you don't know what ballast is, obviously. No ship of that size should be flailing around in those conditions. Proving me correct, there are vids of QE2 in huge seas; it is not bobbing uncontrollably like a cork in a hurricane.

I'm a Naval Architect. I DESIGN this kind of shit. Cruise ship captains are told to avoid heavy seas at all costs. The QE2 is designed to go through heavy seas because of it's long routes. Hell, this damn thing doesn't even have active stabilization, so it's probably a 15-20 year old ship. It's also pretty clear that it's having trouble maintaining a course into the waves. Again, stupid captain in an environment out of the ship's design, probably having mechanical trouble.
