It's worth looking for an extremely rare recording by pianist Jorge Bolet, of the Prokofiev 2nd pf cto, on the Remington record label. The piano playing is exceptional, and amazingly disciplined.
It may be that Argerich simply doesn't like the Prokofiev 2nd pf cto. I suspect that the work is too chaotic for her sensibilities. But at this point, I worry that even her superhuman technique may no longer be up to the demands of the 2nd concerto.
@johncpt Huh? I'm not sure where to start. This is pf no.1 for a start and you should of heard of Argerich anyway. She's an amazing concert pianist who began performing at age 10, you should check some performances of Prokofiev no.3, she handles chaotic very well.
Given her natural affinity for this kind of thing, I for a long time mooned that she might get involved with the Concertos 2 and 5, but never heard of her going there. Think of what she might do with the insane cadenzas of the number two, given what goes on in the ending of this.
She was 67 here, and 69 now. Dont you see who she is? Shes not a 67 or 69 year old woman. Shes Martha Argerich in her 67th or 69th year. At 100 shell be Martha in her 100th. One thing I notice is that she doesnt color her hair, or cut it short. She wears little makeup, if any - no need. Videos and pictures of her youth show she was quite attractive. Looking into her face now, as she plays, you still see her there, and hear her. There is real magic, warmth and beauty timeless and ageless.
You jerk...She's not old...she's in the prime of her life. How "old" do you think Prokofiev was when he wrote this? Or Rubenstein who played well into his 90s.
A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, I performed this piece, and with great anxiety on the big day. I totally remember the exact moment I began to doubt myself on finishing with a flourish or a flop. For Martha, it's at 3:21, and that quick smirking smile is priceless. Now THAT'S confidence, and it's what makes me love this clip even more - - Thanks for posting!!
Prokofiev for this concerto used an ingenious technique: structurally uniting the piece by incorporating themes from the first into the last movement.
THE AUDIENCE IS NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE A COMMENT....I agree with marcparella....the performance was great...Argerich was simply DIVINE!!!! I have a question:why at the 90% of the orchestras, are slightly back from the piano in this movement?...and always the horns and trumpets, play like turtles??!!!!!! I had the same problem, both the 2 times, when I perfomed it,with orchestras
The first time I heard this piece live was at a young person's concert in the early 70s. At the end of the manic close, the kids went fucking wild and they repeated the last movement. This is exactly the kind of repertoire to get young people into this classic music thing.
What's with the audience? They look anemic. This is one of the most excited closes in the literature and this group looks as if they're waiting for the soccer match to start.
do you ever think about if you were accidentally switched with martha during a performance and you were playing something like that and then you realized that you have no idea what you are playing so you panic and improv baby?

WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS AUDIENCE.
I saw TONS of people not even bothering to clap (?), and I am pretty sure I saw some sleeping.
Did they slip sleeping pills in their drinks or something? Pffffttttt....

2:58-3:03! Ah! It feels great inside the skin jeje... The guy at 0:31: "I can´t belive it, this is great"
2:01- right hand go up and then the left hand imitates it, going down... like "I can do it also" je... Sorry my english.

I agree with you, notpurfect1. And at 100 she'll still be able to put more energy and more adequate feeling into this piece than Richter or Kissen.

Not to nitpick but this video is from a performance she did in July 2005 when she was 64 years old. Martha was born June 5, 1941.

@bjohn100us Rubinstein did not play "well into his 90s". He gave his last concert at 89. He stopped because he his eyesight failed.

The orchestra sucked and so did the audience. Just bland. Martha could only do so much with that back she had to play agains.

but the orchestra needs some work
