This solo is so great, especially if your marimba has a great low end. I learned this piece a few years ago as a doctoral student. I don't consider myself a marimbist, but I've played some serious stuff. Etude in A min is perhaps the hardest marimba piece I've ever played. It is pretty short, but I wouldn't try it out unless you've got some time on your hands to work out some of the parts.
Is it possible to major in jazz vibes/marimba. I want to major in music and i play sax but i really want to switch or pick up vibes. I'm already a junior in highschool, are they really hard to learn?
@CaseyCangelosi It is nothing personal, just a taste for different aesthetics in music and composition. You are a killer player. I'm glad that you have found a niche that you can be successful in.
really?...come on...will somebody please write better music for this instrument. When 98% of the literature is crap, one would think it is easy to avoid that...maybe not.
@armswim10 thats.. weird man. this an etude. He just wanted some type of monster of a piece. i am guessing you wrote this before you listened to his other works.
@armswim10 no actually i dont like winning more then performing i love performing. and the way i see it assuming makes an ass out of ume and not me. i love his work. but if you dont why be a jerk about it. go tell it to some one else who cares because know one here will care. i just thought you might have not heard all of his stuff but its what ever.
I have always been impressed by the use of four mallets on marimba. I don't care who you are, we are talking about some serious eye/hand coordination!
Stevens and Musser are both segregated grips (the mallet shafts don't touch), as opposed to cross grips (mallet shafts cross under the palm) like Burton and Traditional. The big difference between Musser and Stevens is the thumb position, thus (and more importantly) the pivoting direction of the wrist. The thumb nail in Stevens' is facing up, the thumbs in Musser face inward at each other.
In general, Stevens' wrist breaks like a French timpani grip, where as the Musser breaks like a matched or German timpani grip. My grip is more Musser then Stevens, that type of wrist movement just makes a lot more sense to me. :)
fantastic, truely. I tried to learn that grip several years ago, yet could not grip and spread with ample control. I applaude your hard work, you are a wonderful performer and musican ( and not everyone can do both). I love the sound from the Marimba One marimbas. So warm and reverberating that one can feel it from the mallets to the bones. :)
Wow.....wtf!!! Thats the spirit!!! Compose and extremely hard marimba solo that can only be performed if you have the mallets skills of a god!!! Way to go lol....oh by the way, I like it lol
It's just plain hard. It will feel really crampy and uncomfortable, which is ok, you just need to realize pain vs discomfort. Be uncomfortable but not in pain. There is a particularly large 10th, E-G#, you must keep your hand very low to the keys, I was actually smacking my hand on the marimba to make that roll work. Hope that helps
Thanks anyways I love your compositions I'm going to purchase them after the audition season is over though haha. I was just wondering because I have to record myself playing snare and marimba and xylo and timpani for prescreening DVD's and I was planning on buying a mac book pro which has a built in camera and mic but I dont know how good that is. Thanks Again hope to talk to you soon about your compositions.
Thanks for the video. It helps. I have to play it for All Distric. Hopefully I get in the top 5 out of the 3 counties competing. It helps me to see someone else play it because I have trouble finding the notes by myself.
Amazing! I want to be like you when I grow up and I'm 35. What mallets are you using? They sound great. Can any of your compositions be played on a low E?
Hey, thanks for the post. For the most part they're on a 5, but there are a few that fit on a low A and low F. The website will tell you what pieces fit on what. Enjoy,
in the first bar, how do you play the octave A after the C major 3rd chord, bit tricky for me, by the way georgous sounding marimba, i love the marimba one range. by the way where can i get the piece?
I land in the octave with mallets 1+3, this puts you in a convenient position for the run. The sticking I like for the run is: 3/1 2 3 2 3 2 4 2 3 2 3 2 3 2. This way there is only one manual shift and only for one hand, the right hand moves from its first few white notes (just A,E) then stays on black notes for the rest of the run. So, the right hand path is simply: A\E/Bb/Db\Bb\Ab\Gb.
hope that helps, you can find the music at the website in right corner description.
Nice , Seems so easy when you've got the sticking correct, i was playing the C/E chord with 2and3 and the octave with 1 and 4 then i simply play the first part of the run as an arpeggio beetween mallets. thanks for the help man.
In the first bar where you have the A Octave immediatly after the c major 3rd and then a arpeggio of A Minor, how do you play it yourself, cos i've been playing the octave with my left hand and i know its wrong, by the way how can i get the entire piece of sheet music, and are there any others? excellent playing
