TODAY WAS THE SHIT!! I haven't danced with Flat Top since 1996, and I finally got to bust out my old school popping with him right now at Universal City Walk. I wish I was still practicing, but at least I still got it.
Its flexibility.. He stretches his spine alot which alows a major curvature which protrudes your inards.. its actually extremely hard to do, and takes alot of practice.
yo this guy is a bad ass performer!! i know this guy personally and couldnt be any happier to know someone who is very good at what they do and enjoy .. true entertainment
The quintessential example of the difference between a performer and a dancer. He's obviously both but leans WAY more towards the performance aspect of the art form.
But the thing is I've never seen him in a battle. I've only seen him at shows. And when people put on shows they go through a routine that they planned out for it. And yes he has a routine strobe a little, rocking chair strobe, split and strobe, and the "get fat" move lol. But really I've never seen him battle. I mean he probably could boogaloo and all that jazz but he's at the point where he doesn't really have to do that.
there's some footage of him out there playing aroudn in exchanges with Boppin Andre. He's still basically doing the same stuff. I've also talked to people who have danced around him for years and they say the same thing, it's just his style.
He's definitely the best out of all the whole minimal movement, slow motion, strobing, ticking, etc crowd for sure though.
Well, if you live in LA you should probably know the place where he dances - Universal City Walk... I haven't seen Flat Top in a battle too, but Fu Man Chu is right - he is the best in his thang...
LA has a lot of talents by the way...like Scorpio, Midnight (a friend of Flat Top, they live on the same street)... I want to make the interview with Flat Top, but that's not such easy thing, since he doesn't use PC...
Well I live on the east coast lol. Neways I'm gonna check out those other dudes. If I lived in that area, then I would definately talk to flat top and ask for some advice. Definately give that interview a shot and post it up and tell me when you do please.

He's pretty good. But he's too stationary for my taste. I think if he moved around more and faster he might be a lot sicker but then that would take away from his techniques.

well it's not like he's in a battle lol. Isn't it his job too?
emanthechamp 2 years ago
Yeah, but this is kinda how he ALWAYS dances as I understand it. He's a performer by trade, street dance just happens to be part of his medium.
The opposite would be someone who dances well enough that you can consider it a performance but the performance aspect of it was secondary.
It's splitting hairs but it's probably a good idea to figure out for yourself whether you prefer to dance or perform.
