I must admit there is something about the tune that conjured up visions of the Marine Drummers in the film "Captain and Commander" when they were 'beating to quarters' again Awesome!
Russ and gentlemen, This is absolutely beautiful ! I will go to sleep tonight with my radio off because this song will be playing over and over in my mind. The video is also awesome and brings back many memories ! Thank You Sir.
Hey! it's Phil Cunningham! This is the first mp3 I ever purchased, because I heard it on a folk music radio program. I didn't know all the participants at the time. Nice!
tom, thanks so much for posting, this is a beautiful song by russ & it deserves to be heard by everyone-all the instruments together complement each other-its just amazing
i'm glad russ wrote this song & i'm glad they played w/the accordion-it compliments the fiddle and the instruments really well-hope to post it on ham dulcimer soon
Beautiful! Love the shots of the snowfall and each individual player's faces. Gorgeous camerawork. And the music is beautiful, too! Thanks and very best wishes
Thanks a ton for resurrecting this tune !! I've tracked down the vendor of the DVD's over there. I'll be buying the sessions, and converting them to our country's coding.
Transatlantic Sessions Series 4 starts TV transmission on BBC 2 Scotland (only) on Sunday 13 September 2009 at 22:50 BST. There are six episodes. (CD and DVD will follow).
Learning this tune now on guitar to play as a duet with a mandolin playing friend. Russ was born a hundred years to late. His pretty tunes could have been written long ago.
Bravo! That is just so beautiful. You've stirred up both sides of me, Tom, the Orange and the Green. Way down here in the antipodes, the blood still stirs and sings.
Before I leave these pages för my own copies of TS 1&3 I would like to thank you, Tom and the others for giving the rest of the world a chance to discover all these marvelous artists. My celtic blood runs twice as fast as my swedish when I see their joy and satisfaction. To point out someone in particular is hard, but I have to mention the composer Russ Barenberg, the expressive Danny Thompson, Maura O`Connell - what a voice- and of course Jerry Douglas, who was the reason I found it.
@neacht I think the word you're looking for is "tasteful". I have a friend who plays classical guitar, but he acknowledges that many of the "Greats" in any genre will gladly sacrifice taste to show off technical skill - my own knowledge of music confirms this. The fact that Russ makes no attempt to show off makes him a great musician in his own right.
I keep coming back to this site for another listen. The song strikes a stong emotional nerve everytime I listen to it. I look forward to playing it on the mandolin and hope my fascial expression is as content as the squeeze box musician.
Thank you Tom! Living in the States I never knew of the Transatlantic sessioins. I plan on buying session 3 once it's released on DVD. (website says early december)
