Just to end some confusion: American Nightmare is NOT Alan Wake 2. It's to expand upon the universe of the series. American Nightmare stars Alan as he is trapped in the episodes of Night Springs he wrote when he was younger. "Remedy confirms this will not be the last Alan Wake game, and that the sequel is definitely coming, but no details or specific release schedules."
To save alice, alan had to stay in the dark place, he swapped her for himself. this is what zane did wrong, instead of substituting himself for jagger they both stayed in the world, the words its not just a lake its an ocean implies that the darkness is happening worldwide as appose to just in bright falls, henceforth why there is a different setting in american nightmare :) thumbs up if it helped

Seeing this ending it is possible that they will make a sequel. Him saying "its not a lake, its an ocean." could imply that SOMETHING gone wrong. Saying that it is no longer a lake and now an ocean could mean that the darkness was confined but is now free.

The only part I understood was what Alan did to save Alice. I think i get the ending.Alan had already deafeted the darkness with the clicker.Then alice is finally free.Alan needs to write the ending for the story,but it turned out that alice wasn't trapped in a lake but an ocean.For rose,she got scared of the dark so thats why she was holding a lantern.
I appreciate all the support on this series. As far as the DLC goes my 360 didn't have enough space on it at the time and still is full up but when I get a new one I plan on going back and doing work on this.

However what the story/game doesnt explain is how the darkness came into existence, how it managed to take the form of an old lady (Barbara), what it could gain by consuming everyone, and why is it only happening at the lake (ocean?). The "Ocean" could mean its not just happening at the lake it could be everywhere or anywhere or that the darkness didnt only take the form of barbara, it could have taken the form of nightngale too thus there will probably be a sequel to this massive mind fuck
Mr. Scratch looks to be the person that will be interacting with people in the real world as Alan finishes his story. In other words, Alan will be writing about himself in his story. Mr. Scratch is the self that will be acting out what Alan writes
Since Alan never finished his manuscript, he now realizes that he can still prevent the story from ending as a horror where everyone dies. He has the darkness release Alice, but he remains imprisoned in the cabin to finish the story. He realizes that there is a lot of work to be done,but he now realizes what he has to do to stop the darkness (of which we're not really told).
When he finally regains his memory, he realizes that it was the darkness that told him Alice had drowned and that he could use his manuscript to change what happened.
This is where Alan comes in. The darkness needed a way to manipulate Alan into writing a manuscript that it could edit and use to take control of everything. It uses Alice as a hostage. Alice is not actually dead, but being held captive by the darkness. Alan, however, is not originally aware of this.

The only part I understood was what Alan did to save Alice. Before he jumped into the lake he said that everything had to have balance and that every cause had an effect - so, in order to save Alice he had to sacrifice himself..which is why he jumped in and didn't return but Alice was set free. I don't understand the scene of Deerfest...but clearly the darkness still has Alan so will there be another Alan Wake game?? IDK.. also, I have know idea what "it's not a lake, its an ocean" means O___o!

@TheAginyard That means the Dark Presence has an even stronger presence than before... Darkness spread as wide as the ocean itself, so is gonna be 100 fold bigger and more powerful than just a small lake. In short, no more dark lake but now is dark ocean... The usual ending of a horror story

Is it me or did Rose take over as the crazy lantern lady and Alan had to make himself disappear like Zane did to defeat the darkness.. But the only difference was that Alan was able to free Alice unlike Zane was able to do for Barbara... But wth was the it's ocean thing about? -__-

I think i get the ending.Alan had already deafeted the darkness with the clicker.Then alice is finally free.Alan needs to write the ending for the story,but it turned out that alice wasn't trapped in a lake but an ocean.For rose,she got scared of the dark so thats why she was holding a lantern.

@DAniMatore So Brad's pretty much like any other AD/HD player out there. I related and enjoyed thoroughly since I don't have an xbox360 or this game, nor will I buy one just to support a local game developer even though I like the game. If this was available on PC, I'd buy it, just like I bought Remedy's Max Payne games, just to support an awesome developer I enjoyed. Thanks Brad!

However what the story/game doesnt explain is how the darkness came into existence, how it managed to take the form of an old lady (Barbara), what it could gain by consuming everyone, and why is it only happening at the lake (ocean?). The "Ocean" could mean its not just happening at the lake it could be everywhere or anywhere or that the darkness didnt only take the form of barbara, it could have taken the form of nightngale too thus there will probably be a sequel to this massive mind fuck

Mr. Scratch looks to be the person that will be interacting with people in the real world as Alan finishes his story. In other words, Alan will be writing about himself in his story. Mr. Scratch is the self that will be acting out what Alan writes

Since Alan never finished his manuscript, he now realizes that he can still prevent the story from ending as a horror where everyone dies. He has the darkness release Alice, but he remains imprisoned in the cabin to finish the story. He realizes that there is a lot of work to be done,but he now realizes what he has to do to stop the darkness (of which we're not really told).
