It was actually the Toyota GT One that caused this accident. It was running such a radical areo package that it caused the front of the CLR to lift and the car to take off like that.
@nextpage10 These cars weigh very little, go very fast, and are actually rather large. Some designs, if they bottom out, then get too much air under the nose, it'll lift up, and it's game over from there once the wings stall because of the angle of attack.
That was Peter Dumbreck's crash in LeMans 1999 in one of the two CLK GTR's. Mark Weber had something similar happen to him in qualifying that year. He abruptly came out of the slipstream of the car in front of him and the rush(over 200 mph) of air got under his car and he went airborne. Not a very rare thing considering the car is almost absolutely flat underneath. They've since rethought the flat-bottomed idea to channel air better under and around the cars.
@clkgrt The CLK-GTR is a grand tourer that raced in the '97 FIA GT championship (which it won). The CLR is the car you see in the video above, a Le Mans prototype. Many people tend to confuse the CLK-GTR with the CLR and also the CLK-LM with the CLK-GTR, but in fact they are three very different cars.
@kudjin Spain complete's Mark's hat trick! He did it twice in the Merc at Le Mans and now in the Red Bull (no wings alas)...
This one is Peter Dumbreck though. Mercedes blamed Webber and thought that he must have been doing something wrong. When Dumbreck did the same, they realised that their design was flawed.
@blutoniumxfreak i guess he was, but mark webber did the exact same thing in this race discipline, and nearly exactly the same in F1. these race cars are so light, most of the time they just float. crashes head on into a wall are far more dangerous than this in my opinion, especially if some dicks at Imola dont know how to use tyre walls
this is clk lm!! clk gtr was made for FIA GT championship and lm for le mans. Visual they are almost same but they are different because this two championship have different regulations.
its simple physics. the bottem is compleatly flat so when the smallest amount of air gets under the car it becomes a wing. thats why it fliped on that hill cuz air got under the car
Sorry but this is a clip of Le Mans '99. There were no CLK-GTR racing that year and CLK-GTRs never flipped. The flipping Mercs are CLR-LM, based on the Merc CL Class road car. Merc withdraw completely the CLR-LM as they couldn't solve the flipping problem
look at the first camera there you see a porsch behind the 1. car which has an organge painted front bumper now as the camera changes and the which flies is not the porsch eventhough you could clearly see that its the 2 car flying off which should be the porsch... its that you cant see the orange bumper and its really far too flat for a porsche 911...
You idiot. Yes it happened, it happened live on TV, and the car that flips is tucked right behind the first car, the red and white one, which for your info is a Toyota GT-ONE.
@NitroMoviesTeam actually, the car behind the toyota is the clr. its hard to see, but if you look close, its right up behind the toyota. then comes the porsche.
@NitroMoviesTeam it isnt it was mark webber in the le mans 24hr race riving a merc clk gtr and it flipped i was only young and i remeber it on the news
actually the car (type) became airorn 3 times during that LeMans race..twice in practise drien by Mark Weber and once during the race, driven by Peter Dumbreck...thats when Mercedes pulled the remaining car out of the race and this type was NEVER raced again ;)
@NitroMoviesTeam It's real you idiot, the CLR and the Porsche 911 GT1 both flipped, this is when the CLR LM flipped, retard, By the way can you uncurl your arm from your chest and take off your helmet?
its the v8 powered CLR. The road going version of a CLK LM V8 is a CLK LM V8. which is an improved aerodynaic version of the CLK GTR which has the 6.9 V12
I ate with Bob Wolleck (RIP) on the race track in 99' when Peter Dumbreck's CLR n°5 flipped into a little field between Indianapolis and Arnage curve. He was lucky because has you can the, the area is plenty of trees. It was near 9 o'clock PM in France. Great remember it because it was an incredible race fact!
to confirm what other are saying: 99' was definitely the year of the CLR, and not the CLK GTR (previous years in Le Mans). How nice cars they were both!
There three different Mercedes : 1997 : Mercedes CLK GTR for racetrack. At Le Mans 1998 it's Mercedes CLK LM (new design and new engine) and Le Mans 1999 : Mercedes CLR (new design for flipppppppp lol). In grand turismo 4 PS2 game there is a big mistake. The car is Mercedes CLK LM of the last races of '98 FIA GT championship but they write "CLK GTR"...
It could be Webber as he flipped it twice and the team only believed it wasn't his fault when Dumbreck did the same thing. Not sure if Webber flipped it twice in practice?
No it's not a CLK GTR people. Look at the cars in photos - there are differences between the CLK GTR and the CLR, which is the car that ran at Le Mans. One difference, for example is the engine. You will also notice the CLK GTR has a "normal" (raised) grill, whereas the grill on the front of the CLR (shown here) us at an angle.
No it is not. This only ever happened to the Mercedes CLR at LeMans in 1999. For some reason everybody seems to think its a CLK-GTR, but it wasn't. This was the year LMGTP was introduced, and the CLR was Mercedes' adaptation of the CLK-GTR to fit those rules.
