  • I also like DiDonato a lot -- but prefer Rasmussen's version of this. Part of it is timbre -- Rasmussen's is still focused, but deeper and richer. While she get's the fury part right, she's also in total control. Yes this is shrieky in spots, and I don't like the ornamentation nearly as much. Rasmussen's da capo is right on the money. Breathtaking. And speaking of Graham, I'm sure she can sing this better than the one representation on YouTube. Anybody got a better one?

  • @magpie212

    Cannot agree with you more!

So it is a BIG loss that Paula became an attorney instead of star mezzo soprano!

  • genius....love and enjoy are guest stars in this aria...SPINOSI :-)

  • Spinosi was so high that he almost fell off the podium. Hahaha.

  • JCS is the most handsome conductor on the planet. Sorry, that was irrelevant really.

  • @jd7x7jd

Looks like a young Carlos Kleiber, ugh?

  • This is just nuts!!!!! Beastly singing! Nothing better!

  • justin bieber is playing the violin behind joyce!!!! XD

  • 9 people are clueless

  • She looks so thin!

  • Christ's sake... this lady's voice is just BEAUTIFUL. Is rare to find such richeness in notes as furious as those! WOW tottaly BRAVA!

  • @RamirRMA

The voice is VERY good, but alas, not AS GOOD as Paula Rasmussen's.

Go to Paula's performance of Serse (entire opera) and in this aria on Youtube. You will see the difference immediately.

The timbre is fuller and deeper, also rounder and may expressive.

  • oscena

  • En Fuego...

  • That was fierce! You betta sang!!!

  • @jayalilaw Yup, that pretty much sums it up.

  • mushroom head in the back

  • This is so Thrilling !!!!

  • This so Thrilling!!!!

  • Oh man can wait to see her in Rosalinda at the Met's next season!

  • @noharakun Thats Renee Fleming... Joyce is singing in a world premiere Baroque fantasy 'The Enchanted Island'

  • @classicalgalNYC You're right. Thanks for correcting me.

  • @noharakun Its fine I didn't want you to be disappointed when you got to the theatre ;)

  • She's a long way from Kansas.

  • Justin Bieber plays violin?

  • An incredible range.

  • To have the chance to see Monsieur Spinosi's conduction is just priceless! He's sooooooooo pasionate!

  • Crude furie degl'orridi abissi

    aspergetemi d'atro veleno

    Crolli il mondo, e 'l sole s'eclissi

a quest'ira che spira il mio seno!"

    -

You savage furies from the hideous abysses

    inspire me with your venom!

Let the world turn to ash and the sun be eclipsed

by my anger, till my heart bursts with fury!

  • Very exciting performance from Miss diDonato, as well as the ensemble!

  • I think this is the fastest i have ever added anything to my favorites list. Absolutely MAGNIFICENT.

  • That lady rocks!

  • wow

  • A bedazzling performance of a stunning Handel aria, Handel, whose operas are the most under-rated works in the West! And who said baroque music lacks soul? GFH is the best: both brilliant and soulful!

  • I am so happy for Joyce DiDonato plans to stay in Norway the rest of the life

  • This is simply an impossibly difficult and marvelous performance. Absolutely breathtaking. Of equal magnificence is Rolando Villazon's version of the same aria. Bravi Ms. DiDonato and thank you for posting.

  • straordinaria!!!

  • Wondering if some of you would like to see my version! Keep in mind, I'm just starting to do competitions and some professional productions.

  • Wow! What a great song and great performance as well! :D

Händel was merciless! O_O Look at the huge distance between that high note to the low one she sang at the 2:04 of the song!

  • ...love this woman...

  • @dreamcritic Ah, we meet again (I followed the link on your channel), and once again we agree. Joyce diDonato is simply brilliant!

  • @arpeggio1358 :D love meeting people with good taste ;)

  • @dreamcritic So do I! :-)

  • what a singer!

  • JdD, il faut pas le dire, une très grande chanteuse, mais tout le reste... je le regrette, mais il me semble un simple "show" pour la télévision.

  • Fantastica!

  • Das ist ja hervorragend! Danke Basti! Anna :-)

  • absolutely stunning!!

  • I really REALLY like the fact that this is a standing performance, and that there's so much physical energy. This is how performance should be done - why do we sit down? Look at the result! - What verve!

  • Hau ine Sabine xD

  • As much as I am a great Connolly fan,.this is a thrilling performance and goes top the top of my list

  • Wow, wouldn't want to get on her Serse's bad side! Such a fiery interpretation, with an ease and flexibility with the coloratura runs, and high notes. Excellent!

  • @mariandelochs

    T,

I have to say that while her coloratura skills are awesome, I still like Paula's version the best. Joyce's sound ( to me, anyway) is not pretty to listen to. It sounds like shrieking. I can't wait to hear Susan Graham tackle this one in May.

    Regards.

  • musicali is quite good but it looks like Andre Rieu french version with not class!!!! But Joyce make up for the terrible looks with good singing!!!!!

  • She is definitely one of the best mezzos, if not singers, today. She has a really comfortable timbre, as well as a secure voice in all ranges. She's very pretty too :D

  • Perfect!

  • I'm so glad I decided to do a YouTube search on Joyce tonight - had not seen this glorious video. Brava brava brava as always - Joyce is amazing. In my opinion, no one does it better.

  • im the best klassik singer!!!

  • Why is that woman wearing a purple dress?

  • Who the fuck knows - maybe she's the concert master... either way, it's distracting. The singer should be on display with her gown/dress, not the goddam violin player... she's a fuck 'tard!

  • @rlee1976 Who cares what color dress she's wearing! Listen to the fabulous music they're making!

  • i like the conductor

  • Wow! She's pretty good and has a big voice to be so small. Wonder why I've never heard of her!

  • Anybody know why they're at 440? :s

  • Spinosi xD

  • he's not always that high. but i meant more like the reasoning, not because he wanted it. still, can't complain with results like his.

  • I love that part around 0:36 to 0:40 where DiDonato goes slightly up and down with "aspergetemi...crude furie" and the orchestra strings do the same. Baroque music can be so passionate!

  • marvelous!!

  • Thank you very much for sharing this!

Ms. DiDonato is so fabulous!! ☆☆☆☆☆

  • Maravillosa Joyce!!!!!!! bravisima!!!! Meravigliosa voce!!!Excelente coloratura!!!!! Schöne Stimme, voz bellisima!!! Tecnica perfecta!!!!

  • Every time I listen to this, in the end, I always think I had an heart attack and that I haven't noticed it

  • I'm glad to hear someone else is playing this a lot. I'm embarased to think how frequently I've been playing this. She is something else!

  • Brava!!

  • After listening to about 40 versions I can tell this one is my favourite, not only because of the amazing presence of Didonat, but also because it's my favourite musical direction. They do a fabulous job

  • Joyce Joyce.....Joycina!!!

    BRAVISSIMA!!!

  • Does anyone have the sheet music to this aria...?!?!?!? If someone does, please send me a message. I really really really need the sheetmusic for this piece. THANKS ;)

  • DiDonato is brilliant !! She displays " Callas like tendancies" in her voice ! I have just recently discovered her, and was delighted to find this post !

Thank you for making it available to us !!

  • Such a charismatic and talented singer!

  • Joyce sei sempre favolosa!!! Bravissima!!!

  • grande di donato....

  • Fabulous baroque chamber group! DiDonato is terrific! Enjoyed this version more than her recent CD.

  • Wow! That was amazing. God why doesn't American TV show off this kind of talent more.

  • i know!

  • Thanks Wienerfr. DiDonato has a unique voice!

  • God, France is France, after all, for having an award show dedicated to classical music. I envy all you French. It seems/sounds to me that Ensemble Matheus more often perform at A=440. What's up with that?!

  • Aiiii but Germany is Germany too. Only in the gods-forsaken united states is opera neglected xDDDD

  • Wow!! So this was the starting shot into her fairy tale Handel year 2008. I heard Crude Furie 2x live and can only report the theatre was bursting each time.

I'd be SO happy if she sang more baroque, because not every good post-baroque singer (that JDD is as well) is a good baroque singer. She's one of the very very few, well she succeeded to sing Ariodante, that says all.

    Handel rules!

  • Hmm, sorry Gudrun, I can't type...

This was two weeks ago. I have to correct it : 2009 and not 2008.

    :op

  • Between, will you go to Karlsruhe for M. Mijanovic's concert ?

  • 1. Happy new year wiener :-)

I hope we'll survive with presumably less than 8x Vivica, she's touring so far away ...

    2. Mija: haven't decided yet, if I manage a Radamisto ticket for Friday, too, I'll do the trip to exciting Karlsruhe.

    3. Why does obviously only France manage to have TV shows like this with Joyce?? The pendant in Germany would be a tenor singing a transposed version (in German language). Result: my parents still get a shock when they see a castrato role performed by a woman.

  • You can see this type of show only once every year...

Unless you have cable tv (with a channel like Mezzo, etc.), you have to wait very late to watch classical music programs.

  • Do you hear all the bravas at the end of the aria???... It was me!!!!!!!! ;-) Joyce is just INCREDIBLE!!!!!!
