Yes, I suppose so but IR LEDs are so cheap I don't know why you would want to...

I didn't have easy access to a decent electronics shop so I salvages one from an old remote

@latdan2008 yea you can but you have to be massively careful not to break the l.e.d.
and good question. you should get it out cautionly with neddle nose plyers. thats what i did.
