My grandfather worked at a steel factory for the fact that it was the most honoured profession in the Soviet Union. My mother sold clothes at a store for the fact that she loved fashion and always had the latest. My father was professor/teacher philosophy because he was interested in philosophy.
People chose profession for the work they did, not the income they would have.

The government, under a communist system, replaces God, as the people are expected to be loyal and worshipful of the state.
