I reckon (don't know how you would achieve this) but if you could make his voice a little higher it'd be good. his voice was higher in ROTJ than it is when he's doing his croaky voice now

This is amazing! This is the version I would take into account as the 'actual' scene. Its brief, straight forward and has no dialog change or corruption. It so looks genuine as though it was made by Lucasfilm! How was this made?

I noticed something interesting. The shape of the Emperor's hood is taken from the scene where Vader throws his lightsaber at Luke and Palpatine steps towards them laughing. Isn't it?

Ohh excellent, the thing I didn't like about Lucas's change was how the hologram was so in-your-face that all the mystic of meeting the Emperor was lost. The holigram being fuzzy and having more shadows on his face recapture a bit of that moment when we first meet him.
@ChocolateisIsNice It's from the forthcoming "Empire Strikes Back - Revisited" a fan edit aiming to be what the Special Edition should have been. Look up Star Wars Revisited on fanedit.org for the first one. Very good.
This rendition of the Emperor looks a lot better than the bloated, rubberfaced ghoul from the 2004 DVD version. And changing the dialogue back to the original was an excellent idea. I always took it to mean that Vader already knew or deeply suspected Luke's relationship to him and was hoping to use him as a weapon against the Emperor.
@KenoshiAkai Im new to Star Wars...saw the originals like everyone but didnt like the new ones. I went to comic con a couple of years ago and a fan explain the story in great detail. Know I love Star Wars. Last month this was on HD TV and notice the Emperor looked fat. What version is this and how is it different? Theres 3 versions? Please explain next week Im getting all the Star War movies and want to not only understand the story in context but Lucas point for the small changes. Thanks!
@b7r7u7c7e this is simply done by a fan, but it does adimitedlly look better than the 2004 version, the one you call "fat". The original one from 1980 in my opinion is the best even though it doesnt necessarily look like the emperor, there was an ominous creepiness to it that made it work perfectly.
Fantasic! The new style emperor / Darth Sidious always looked completely stupid.. always wondered why they made him look like a crotchety old man instead of the bad ass evil looking self he was in ROTJ. Excellent job you done it right.
I prefer your first trailer's version of this. By the way, the emperor's cloak isn't blue but black. If you're planning to make the holograms represent the transmision's true colors as they did previously on the film, this would need to be fixed a bit, don't you think?
I agree with most of the comments your version is better than the 2004 version I have to agree with bushidocrusader assessment of the two version dialogue altering the character intention but The dialogue allows Vader the first time in manipulating the Emperor by justifying turning Luke to the dark side to service him when in fact Vader intend to overthrow the Emperor in the Sith fashion harking to his tempting word to Padme at Mustafar to tempt Luke into joining him instead.
Your version is, for me, the best. The Emperor's face in like in ROTJ, and not like ROTS. I prefer the 2004 version than the 1980 because of the actor. And the text is different but 1980's text was good too. Your idea to put 1980's text on Ian Mc Diarmind 's face was great, and i prefer YOUR hologram, it is better than the new one. Great job !
PS: sorry of my english, I'm french. I hope you understood what I've written ^^.
This is great. Definitley well done. But the 2004 version looks more like a version of the Emperor between the Prequel Adventures and the Original Trilogy. That's what I like about it.
Well, I try to act like the Prequels don't exist anyway, because they are so far below the quality of the original films, and the story often outright conflicts with things we see and are told in the originals that it doesn't make sense. Also, the prequels are about 23 years or so before Empire. Jedi is about 1 year after Empire. So Empire Emperor should probably look exactly like Jedi Emperor anyway.
Not to mention the "new" dialogue is awful and ruinous of Vader's character arc.
The 2004 version ruins Vader's character arc. In the original, he is "obsessed with finding" Skywalker, and we come to realize that is so because the encounter with his son touched his buried humanity. Ultimately, it will redeem him.
In the "new" version, Vader somehow didn't realize this "Skywalker", who had the force and was the right age, was his son at all! Stupid. So his "obsession" was not from his humanity, but because he was just a mindless attack dog for the Emperor. Ridiculous.
Effects on this aren't great, to be honest. I like the way you've added in flicker and disruption to the hologram to make it seem like it's not just a static image when he isn't speaking, but it's still a bit obvious in my opinion.
I fully agree with the dialogue changes though. The 2004 edition was bollocks.
I love that all comments have to be approved before being allowed. Are you only allowing favourable comments, then, Adywan? And they call Lucas a control freak!
I hate when they change the characters of movies to fit the "modernism" of the last character we saw. Big fucking whoop, the Emperor in the first three (IV, V, and VI) is different from the one from the last three. Probably cause they were created some 30 years apart from each other! It doesn't change the story for me or anyone else, so leave it the fuck alone LucasFilms! -_-
@kbtheangelofrock Sorry but you do realise the Emperor from VI is the same as the one from I, II and III? It was just Episode V that had someone else. I agreed with Lucas reshooting it to have McDiarmid as the Emperor to fit in with the rest of the series but the new dialogue was awful
This is awesome, This is better than every version lucasfilm has put out, well done, finally the emperor gets his best version(ROTJ) and best dialogue for this scene.
I like this better. Agreed that the original dialog was better, it made the scene much more mysterious. Don't forget, when we first saw EMPIRE, we had no idea who Anakan Skywalker was. I really wish Lucas had found a way to keep the shocking surprise ending of EMPIRE intact.
I kind of like the darker version of the Emperor from your first trailer. It looked more menacing. Anyway, I love what you've done here since I'm a great fan of the character and never liked the ways he was portrayed on this film. Congratulations.
Problem, the oldest hid his face a bit so that we were stunned in rotj, kinda ruins teh surpise, maybe you should cover his forehead and eye areas except for the eyes have them glow and show the jaw, its menacing and evil and better
Incredible visualization, but why did you cut out the 2004 DVD dialogue? Why'd you change it to match the 80s? The DVD words gave the scene better influence.
@SciFifan19 the added dialogue for 2004 dvd was horrendous. The original dialogue worked so much better. If i had my way i would wipe the 2004 versions from existence.
@adywanuk The original dialogue might have worked on first viewing but made no sense whatsoever thereafter. And given that this is one film out of six, the dialogue changes fit perfectly
The original dialogue is far, far better. The new dialogue is clunky and ridiculous-sounding. It also makes Vader appear stupid. He apparently has been going after "Luke Skywalker", but does not realize it might be his (Anakin SKYWALKER'S) son until the Emperor tells him. Huh? He couldn't have put that together? A boy who shares his last name, who "the force was strong with", and is the right age for the son he had? First he's thought of it? Ridiculously stupid.
@SciFifan19 besides, by that point back in 1980, nobody had a clue who Anakin Skywalker was. it wouldve thrown us way off if we saw the main antagonist above Vader mention something that Vader didn't know and that would make Vader's character of less importance and more like a pawn. we didn't want to cast away Vader so early, especially if he was going to kill Luke. This also would've ruined Vader's revelation to Luke because the audience would've known it was already coming.
@jmiester25 Ok, first off: I already said I understand. Not everyone likes what Lucas did. But, we are all entitled to our own opinions.

I LOVED the original 1980 dialogue, because it left so much of Vader a mystery. And to be honest, the prequels were so bad, I don't want to consider them canon.
@LukeLovesRose Oops, I must apologize. My text got cut off. I also wanted--never mind. What I've been trying to say is, I don't mind anymore. I'm generously saying that people can like what they want to. I really don't want to argue. PLEASE don't make me feel guilty. I'm not interested in fighting.
@SciFifan19 The dialogue was horrendous. "I have no doubt he is the offspring of Anakin Skywalker". He says it like he doesn't know Vader is Anakin. Even in the sense that Vader is no longer Anakin it makes no sense, because Luke is still biologically half of him. So there for it just makes it strange and awkward he doesn't say "I have no doubt he is YOUR offspring". The original dialogue made it ambiguous and was worked even after you know Vader and Anakin are one in the same.
@BamesJonifer Oops, I must apologize. My text got cut off. I also wanted--never mind. What I've been trying to say is, I don't mind anymore. I'm generously saying that people can like what they want to. I really don't want to argue. PLEASE don't make me feel guilty. I'm not interested in fighting.
In response to people that complain of to much static. The Star Destroyer was moved out of the asteroid field so a stronger connection could be established with the message, whos to say and asteroid or two could straggle from the field and interfere the signal a couple times.
well done on the "yes, yesss" part. Good to reshoot the scene for continuity. Bad to have the make up and lighting look funky. and no "wtf my son lives?" from vader being there. I mean, really? the rebel named luke skywalker with jedi powers is your son and you couldn't figure that out until the empreror said so... thanks lucas.
@kamdan2011 That's what I was thinking too. Overall it's a really good effect, however I could do with a little less static and a little more "life" in the upper part of his face. Since he never blinks and his brow never moves it seems to lessen the illusion a bit.
@Timstuff@Timstuff I like that he doesn't move - makes it seem creepier. There are enough distortions in the hologram effect that fool the eye into thinking there's the odd blink and so on.

In response to people that complain of to much static. The Star Destroyer was moved out of the asteroid field so a stronger connection could be established with the message, whos to say and asteroid or two could straggle from the field and interfere the signal a couple times.

WAY better. Much more closely accurate to the OT Emperor as it should be. Well done!

Ady, indeed you are as powerful as the Emperor has foreseen!

well done on the "yes, yesss" part.

That's pretty solid work... it looks spot on like the Emperor from ROTJ.

An eye blink would be nice.
kamdan2011 1 year ago
@kamdan2011 That's what I was thinking too. Overall it's a really good effect, however I could do with a little less static and a little more "life" in the upper part of his face. Since he never blinks and his brow never moves it seems to lessen the illusion a bit.
Timstuff 1 year ago
@Timstuff It was already done but it looked fake, so Ady decided to leave it static. BTW there is no need to give him more ''life''.

@Timstuff @Timstuff I like that he doesn't move - makes it seem creepier. There are enough distortions in the hologram effect that fool the eye into thinking there's the odd blink and so on.

it's fascinating that the fans do a far better job than the actual guys who made the DVD "special edition". For shame, Lucasfilm. For SHAME. Keep up the grand work, Ady!

@LordPhillock8 That's because the fans spend the time and money to create something that the fans want to enjoy where Lucasfilm does not.
