With the torches thing, I like to use dynamic lighting, and hiding the torches or glowstone behind a block can make it look better without standing out and creating too sharp of a lighting effect

Don't know if you mentioned this in the video, but try and build things with an odd number of wall block e.g. 11x21 house, roofs will turn out much nice when your finished and this can be useful for adding things to buildings as well
