Wow technical to death! amazing.. i've now watched a lot of the entries for this... you got robbed.. but what can you do.. except for what you already do.. and that's rock the skins like few others can. Keep it up man
nick my friend you're a fucking beast , miss you in culling the weak , well miss that band in general hope things are well man . you'll go far in life with your kit despite people thinking you lack soul and deepness in your playing , just proves they dont know what the fuck drumming is really made of
I think this solo is awesome. We need more metal drummers in the GC Drum-Off! I have entered the competition this year, and was wondering, did you prepare your solos in this and the other rounds? Or did you just improvise? That's what I'm most nervous about: not knowing what to do.
Don't let him get to you. AwesomeCentury has a "really good" video of himself playing the guitar on his channel. If you find that anything he says is offensive, just watch his video and you'll understand that he's a moron that has no real concept of what music is. AwesomeCentury, you are a DB, fo sho.
Phrasing and dynamics would have put you on top. Slow down a little. Let those dynamics build up. Less cymbal work as it doesn't groove much. Meaning shorter cymbal stuff.
You are so talented, it's a complete mind blown experience... keep it up and also I love how you play a variety of different styles thats the key to good drumming! awesome drumming once again =)
How did you not win?! The "winner" and his "groove" was just...awful. Then again I don't prescribe to the whole "soul" feel. It's musically inept to me. Sounded like my nephew playing around with my kit and he is 5. Yourself on the other hand showed much better ability. I mean mucho more. I just ask that you don't sell out to the judges just for a win. If ya like it then gravy. But catering to them is no bueno IMO, then again Im not competing so I cant really say. Just keep it amazing and metal
...more appreciative of the athletic features of drumming, some the artistic, some the ethnic, some the trendy. And, for my money, your playing is brainy and physical, but not necessarily "soulful" or "funky" or "deep." Nothing wrong with that. It's just who you are. And I'll bet a hundred bucks that you don't make the mistake of thinking that, in the world of music, more technical ability equals "better." You're a fucking beast, though. Real talk. You've got something special going on here.
@RCRhythm I totally respect that comment man, after doing this competition for years you begin to notice a trend in the judging and what wins. After talking to numerous judges at these things they all have two things in common. They want to hear groove and dynamic. Thats a staple no matter who you ask. My dynamic levels in this solo were minimal, not something I shedded enough light on. My groove is a little too "tech" and not simple enough for most to grasp.
@blastbeatshaman I've found ultimately that sole function of Drum Off is to find a drummer to get paid to play in big name bands. Metal isnt big, neither is drum and bass or even jazz. Judges look for that guy who touches on his chops but moreover harnesses the pure feel and soul in playing grooves. I didnt do that and I can guarantee you next time I will. Its a learning process where failure brings more experience. Much respect though man, Cheers.
@blastbeatshaman Yeah, I think you nailed it. I also think it's kind of like a date with a woman: It's not about sitting down and telling her everything you have to offer; it's about vibing with her. About chemistry. Maybe some occasional bragging, but real casually. You'd never sit down and go, "I have 14 cars! I climbed Mt. McKinley! Ryan Seacrest owes me money!" It's more about going on a journey with her.
You've got the chops. Take your audience on that journey and they're yours.
I don't know, Nick. You're more talented than I am and a better drummer. But if winning this contest is really your goal, you might hve to accept that there probably is a little bit of a prejudice against heavy metal drumming, but more importantly that there's a depth, groove, stylistic-authenticity and soulfulness to some peoples' drumming that supercedes their chops. The mistake some folks make is in thinking that one skill set is guaranteed to appeal to judges. In reality some are...
@TheBubbanaterlolz probably because the style of music you like is a tiny little box that will fade away quickly with the winds of time. This is a competition of playing the drums, making music with drums. Not hitting things like a 3 year old child with a set of pots and pans in rhythm.
Nick, great job. I was there at Seattle and video'd in the bad light. Thanks for putting these up. I called Seattle GC just today and they couldn't tell me who won down in Hollywood. I was hoping it was you.
I believe these drum offs are bias in terms of their judging criteria my friend lenny reese lost in the store finals new york when the other drummers couldn't hold a candle to his chops. Nick you up the degree of difficulty in playing traditional grip alone which set your standards ten times higher than any of the other drummers. Your chops are flawless and your routine far surpassed those drummers. The winner may have had groove but he doesn't have your amazing chops and uniqueness.
Now, I've only watched you and the winner so far... but I have at least gathered that your five minutes was a lot more to my taste; you did a damn fine showing of your skill and had plenty of flow and feel.
Shit, that DnB part was mindblowing. Loved the tribal thing at the start too, the solo as a whole really highlights all the aspects of your style. Great job. Nice stick tricks too.
one of the baddest motherfuckers out there and will now be KILLING IT WITH UNEARTH!!!! can't wait to hear what you add to their shit!!!!

As a fellow percussionist, may I say that was a great solo. If anybody tells you differently, they are wrong.
