His website was shutdown by Disney. I had to buy the VHS from Europe and have it transferred to NTSC DVD so it could be played in the US. It is a shame that Disney won't sell the movie to someone else to digitize and make GOOD copies for distribution.

SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE made a commercial with a very similar theme to Song of the South. It was a (parody) commercial for "Uncle Jemimmas pure Mash Liquor". The black man was the husband of Aunt Jemimma, the pancake lady. Uncle J. though made mash liquor. There were cartoon birds, and such, but they were only his halocinations. Funny! Anyone ever seen that SNL bit?
The first record that I owned was a 78 RPM that had the audio track from the "Tar Baby" scene in the movie. I played it all the time. I was 5 years old. I have a question for the people who claim that the Tar Baby is racist:

Song Of The South isn't banned it is simply frowned upon. The film isn't overtly racist it simply suffers from being a product of an unfortunate age. When SOTS is finally released from the vault, it wont be a monumental seller, but it will be gobbled up by collectors and the Disney faithful.SOTS is the first color feature film to meld live action & animation. It is a historical movie in many ways and must be released! FREE UNCLE REMUS!
To clarify a common misconception: this movie was never actually banned in the U.S. , it has been withheld from wide release on home video by the copyright holders, The Walt Disney Company, and yes there is a difference between that and outright banning of the film. I have a VHS copy of this movie. It was purchased many years ago in either China or Japan. I know this because during a couple of the songs, there are those foreign subtitles, but only during a few of the songs. I'm glad I've got this copy. I just burned it to DVD. The reconciliation you refer to wasn't between whites & blacks, but rather between north & south after the war. Harris was part of that - I never denied that. But that came at the expense of black civil rights, like the repeal of the civil rights law by Supreme Court.

Song Of The South isn't banned it is simply frowned upon. The film isn't overtly racist it simply suffers from being a product of an unfortunate age. When SOTS is finally released from the vault, it wont be a monumental seller, but it will be gobbled up by collectors and the Disney faithful.SOTS is the first color feature film to meld live action & animation. It is a historical movie in many ways and must be released! FREE UNCLE REMUS!

To clarify a common misconception: this movie was never actually banned in the U.S. , it has been withheld from wide release on home video by the copyright holders, The Walt Disney Company, and yes there is a difference between that and outright banning of the film. There is NO law preventing Disney from releasing a DVD or blu-ray version of this film, they have simply chosen not to.

@sarcasmagasm that's right. because it was so controversial Disney decided to archive it. There were several groups that tried to have it banned unsuccessfully. I'll bet if Disney released it now, it would be a best seller.

@n2tunes I seriously doubt it would be a best seller, its a good movie and all but it does seem a tad offensive. Not offensive in any derogatory way, but more like offensive in a propagandic way. True, it never portrays blacks in a negative light, nor whites. Its offensive in that it kind of white-washes history, acting as if nothing was ever wrong.

I have a VHS copy of this movie. It was purchased many years ago in either China or Japan. I know this because during a couple of the songs, there are those foreign subtitles, but only during a few of the songs. I'm glad I've got this copy. I just burned it to DVD. I bet it's pretty valuable since it's unavailable...

If we could all drop the pathetic "find something rascist in everything" trick the world would be a happier place. Shit happened in the past, but hey its in the past and things are way past the point of dragging back up at the slightest opportunity. This movie is fantastic - Disney should bring it to the masses on DVD to show the world and be proud of!

This film does not support a positive master/slave relationship, which is what most people find controversial about it. There are no slaves in this movie, they were sharecroppers.
If they had been slaves, Uncle Remus wouldn't have been allowed to leave at the end of the movie to find the little boy's daddy in Atlanta.

It's people like you that have blown this issue WAY out of proportion! It is simply a black man who wants to share black forklore with two white children! If anything it is teaching white children not to care about the boundaries society had set up at the time! I watched this film so much when I was younger and I never once thought about it being racist, I just fell in love with the stories and the man! It's a shame that a child's film has been dragged into this long term debate!

I agree that "they" hae made an issue of a wonderful fun movie with many valuable lessons in the most fun way.. I'm so glad we have it here. My grandaughter loves the laughin place. It's her bedtime story. She goes to bed happy and so do I.

This is such a -CLASSIC- One of the Disney Greats !!!
This was a time when representation of the Old South was played out as such, you cant escape it ... ever . It's history .
This beloved story should be available for new generations to enjoy.
It's a shame it's banned, - Gone with the Wind is available on several formats and Scarlett's -Pa , has a line that uses the word "Darkie's" , whats up with that ?? People need to lighten up on mere words, if it's not directed at you , just chill.

Wow how offensive can you get?? I mean the equivalent would be an Old Jew in the Warsaw Ghetto telling stories to two little German kids of a Nazi officer. Can you imagine the outrage of seeing an Old Jewish man walking around a concentration camp singing Zip-A-Dee-Do-Da telling stories? I Love this movie! Happy memories from my childhood. I couldn't remember the name of the movie- finally found it. I love the black man singing with the birds, bees and butterflies. I thought of him as a Grandpa... I am a white women and I don't think this is a racist movie. I think that things our ancestors did black & white were wrong and we should all learn from them. so lets move on....

I'd do anything to buy that movie, but only if those people figure out a way to slow it's speed down by 4%. I learned that those are one of those PAL DVD's, and that's what causes it to be a little bit fast like that.
I mean I don't mind PAL copies of what I'd like to see, but just a thought.

Ya know, I have never seen this film(select clips via here on youtube).. It looks like a cartoon that ANY child would enjoy, As for racist overtones... Seriously??? I see worse broadcast on basic cable television today. The only people who are offended, are adults who feel like being offended, and want something to complain about! If ANY of you watch basic cable television you would see that much worse is shown, especially when it comes to stereotypes....

I don't condone bootlegging but there are many Films and TV Shows that aren't available any other way. This Movie isn't available on Home Video because the Studio (Disney) fears reprisals from "Politically Correct" Groups if they did make it available. Other shows are not out because of Corperate Greed. The 1960s BATMAN and both1970s "Bionic" Series are not out because Two Studios own the Name, and refuse to share Royalties. People that want them are simply going somewhere else to get them!

1. Because they say the n word
2. Because all the African Americans have 'Masters' and call them so
3. Because African American families complained through written letters to permanately remove Song of the South due to its racial content.

Todays blacks hate it because it shows the African American male in a position of humbleness. No gang fights, drive-by shootings or hos ;) to be had here. Only a simple, gentle & wise man who just happened to be black. One who didnt carry all of that hate around with him. Consequently, he simply "doesnt line up with todays modern sensibilities".

@tuksuna236 this couldn't be more untrue, portraying blacks in a humorous manner was the norm at the time and Walt didn't hate them. He wasn't a Hitler supporter since he was patriotic and made anti-nazi propaganda cartoons. And it's debated ALOT about him hating Jews and alot of rumours are made.

Uncle Remus, a fictional ex-slave who after 1865 remembers how "wonderful" life was on the "old plantation" before the war.
So "no problems here" until after the war when the slave are released & they revert to "savagery". That's the message. Blacks need to be controlled or they destroy society.
Getting a black man to say how great it was to be in chains, tortured, killed, women raped daily is outreagous. That racism justified slavey & discrimination.

Award? James Baskett wasn't even allowed to attend the ceremony. So getting a black man to say how great & "wonderful" being tortured & killed was for blacks isn't outreagous?

If Germans got Jews to sing about how "wonderful" life was in Nazi Germany, would that be ok to you too? That would outreagous.

I am sure you do the same with every film, cartoon, comedy and book! Uncle Remus is made into the hero of the movie. I am so glad that I have this on DVD so the story and tales can be shared with my and my families children.

The reconciliation you refer to wasn't between whites & blacks, but rather between north & south after the war. Harris was part of that - I never denied that. But that came at the expense of black civil rights, like the repeal of the civil rights law by Supreme Court.
According to Robert Hemenway, who worked on his writings, he says there is racism in Harris' work. "Uncle" is an insult & "Remus" makes things look "wonderful"; this isn't anti-racism, it's the epitome of it.

Even the song "zippidy do da" is directly taken from a blackface song in the 19th century. Was it racist? Well, why else go to minstrel shows to misrepresnt blacks?

No, he didn't condemn lynching when he worked for the Georgia newspaper Constitution (as editor) which openly & on many occasions called for kynchings, including some high profile ones. Georgia was where some of the worst white supremacy was
And maybe you can explain why WEB DuBois refused to meet with him after another man was hanged that Harris' newspaper actively demanded to be killed - the only question Harris' paper asked was how to kill: "burning at the stake" or hanging"

As to "Aunt Jemima", she actually is from Billy Kersands' "Old Aunt Jemima", a minstrel (blackface) song from about 1875. She fits the "mammy slave" that scholars talk about: happy, unsexual, a servant in the kitchen. Present in many Tom & Jerry cartoons.
So it's wrong to blame Disney for starting this; he just dontinued doing what others did. But you're only kidding yourself by claiming these were "terms of affection". Really, try that nonsense on someone else.
