Atlanta is the descendant of Atalanta. She cannot be the descendant of Artemis because Artemis remained chaste for eternity. The writers of the show got it wrong in the first episode but they corrected in later ones.

Two credible reasons that Atlanta is a descendant of Atalanta and and not Artemis are:

Atalanta was raised by Artemis, was a hunter and And ran very fast, like Atlanta.

And another reason ... Artemis was a virgin, never had children!

Now Atalanta may have been mortal, but some greeks saw her as a sort of goddess. She originally vowed chastity to join Artemis's hunting troope (BIG requirement), but Atalanta's adopted father eventually wanted her to get married. A guy named Melanion asked Aphrodite for help, she gave him golden apples, yadda yadda, Atalanta lost and got married and BAM! kids!

Actually she was refound by her father so forget the adopted father thing, but Atalanta did have a son. The reason why she was veiwed as a goddess of sorts was her extreme similarity to Artemis & amazing speed & skill. But she was turned into a lion for making love with Melanion in a temple of Zeus,& I think there's a constillation dedicated to them. so yeah, more likely they meant Atalanta, but she & Artemis were too similar. plus more ppl know of Artemis apparently than Atalanta. :3
