And to think he never won an Academy Award for a particular score. (He won a lifetime achievement award.) Shows you how ridiculous and irrelevant the awards are and how deaf the Academy voters are to true genius.
Thanks for this... the song is haunting, the scene in the film related to it is haunting, and the similar scene in my memories regarding the love of my life, Julie, is just as haunting every time I hear this. Love is painful, but never having known real love would be even more so.
@vintagemotelguest I agree. There is something almost ineffably haunting and lonely, yet incredibly beautiful and satisfying, about this piece. Listen how it ends in the major key - gorgeous. This point in the story hardly needed dialogue - it had Morricone. *smile*
I have been a fan of this movie and especially this soundtrack for almost 30 years. Thanks Mr. Morricone! At that time, in my younger years. I'd given up my own pursuit of music but your music reconnected me somehow. Thanks again!
This beautiful score {and DO listen to the other selections posted by pangpangLuckyLuke} ~ it brought ENNIO MORRICONE (at last!) the first of his Oscar nominations...
... but also his first disappointment, losing out to Giorgio Moroder's 'Midnight Express'. Moroder did a few more films, whereas Morricone would go on to perform at the United Nations
There is another track that is quite lovely, though less somber. I don't know it's name but it is heard when Abby and the Farmer are on their honeymoon and just as the Italian circus takes off in their planes, taking Bill with them. Abby and Linda remain on the farm. Could you post this if it's not too much to ask?
One of the many things that made the movie "Days of Heaven" unforgettable was the incredible soundtrack. Of the four you posted, I think this one is the most haunting and beautiful.

I agree with "Buckie Mohawk" but my order is different:
"Once Upon a Time in the West" is Morricone's masterpiece, period.
