@DarkIngrid100 You can usually see the eyes of the babies before the female has given birth. At least in my experience. Look at the dark spot in front of the anal fin(where the babies in this video were coming out of).
@AtishRamkhe If you have decent hiding places, the babies should be fine in the tank with the adults. I used to find them after the birth and carefully transport them to the breeder box, but I don't bother anymore. I just let them fend for themselves. I find they grow faster that way, anyway. Of course, the box makes water changes easier, and you can watch them grow. I've had many generations, but of this batch, I'm currently on my third.
I have had a platy give birth before but unfortunately was not able to witness it. Now I have another pregnant fish that is due anytime now. I hope to see her give birth.
Congrats, I was lucky enough to have this happen in my aquarium when I was a kid. The Mom ate about 5, despite being in the baby trap. 15 sunburst moon platys survived though.
I got 3 mickey mouse platys about 1 month ago, and about 2 weeks later i noticed that two of them started to get really big. They are both pregnant and have been for a while. How long are they usually pregnant for? they are both in a breeding chamber but they have been in there for a long time because I dont know when they are going to have the fry, but i dont want to stress them out. I was wondering if i could let them out and just let them in the tank because i have three caves for the fry?
@newtrainz If you look at the shape of the, 'belly', of the fish, it will look flat at the bottom, or, 'squared off', rather than its normal rounded shape. This is a sure-fire indication that the fish is about to drop it's brood. The fish in this video is a perfect example of that.
My platy jus gave birth this morning. I was rushing all around to get as many of the babies as possible. There were 12 that I caught, but I don't know if she had more and they're still hiding, or if they were eaten. They're like yours in the background, a golden panda platy. But the mom is just completely golden.
i have two female platys i had one in the breeding trap and the other one gave birth twice from what i saw and ate them then i put here in the breeding trap and she had one and ate one how many fry do they have?plz reply
@Bazil1869 Platys can have up to 30 fry...my disformed guppy had 12 (she probberly ate some) and then one of my other guppys got into the breeding tank and ate a lot of them :-( so now I only have 7 :-( ....hope that helps... :-)
@thebettafish1 Never leave them in longer than 48 hours it just stresses them to much. i always use to cover the tank (if room lights was on) and give her a little bit of food and put the tank lights out. This particular fish was only in the trap a short time before giving birth, after i knew she was finished, i released her. hope this helps.
We have this fish that was pregnant, she got so big she couldn't swim anymore but would not give birth... so finally she exploded and died. That was sad... but she wouldn't give birth... so I wonder why?
@mikayladanielle26 Dropsy is an common, un-curable disease for fish, it's pretty sad. It's easy to tell. In dropsy, a concentration of fluid in the body tissues and cavities causes the fish's abdomen to become swollen and appear bloated and will look like a pinecone (Raised scales) Google it! Also it's prettty painful for the fish that has it.
@seagurl81 one of my fish did the same thing.... my mom poked something with a needle to ease her birth and she just went completely flat and clear liquid came out??? I'm not sure but mom says that she couldnt go to the bathroom?? sounds weird to me... but the same thing happened to me

You can keep them in the same tank as the adults but you risk your fry (baby fishes) getting eaten. I recommend buying a breeder tank or breeder net for your aquarium and put your fry in there. Make sure to ground the food for them as they have a smaller mouth. I feed mine 4 times a day every 4 hours. Hope they're doing well. Goodluck!
I've just put my female platy in the birthing box, she's gone off her food which is a sure sign she'll either give birth today or tomorrow but i think it may be today.

how do you absolutely know if your platties are pregnant? I just got two females yesterday and I bought them in a tank that had males. I did my reasearch and it told me that platties breed like rabbits, and one of my female's bellies is larger then the others. Is there a way to tell for sure cause I definitly don't have enoug room for fries.
i didn't know i had female platy, until i found out 2day when i was going to feed them. i saw little baby so I separated all other fish in a big bowl as i couldn't separate babies because they are too small and kept the babies and mother platy in the tank. shall i separate mother too after when she finish giving birth? please help.....anyone any advise. thank you :)
@999KAPASIA999 seperate the mother otherwise she will eat the babies..... invest on some moss. that way if she gets prego again and have the babies they can just hide in the moss
@NaomiHa thank you, and yes i have already separated mother platy from that tank.i still see a black on mother platy's belly, does it mean its still pregnant?
is all the baby platy gonna look like mother fish or they will change after?
@scratchmaster101 ok i found 1 baby fish dead on the gravel then i put back mother fish and neon tetra in the tank and other platy and gupppies are separated from babies.
@999KAPASIA999 okay. you can put lots of real or (preferably) artificial foliage in your tank to protect the babies as a place to hide. how big was the baby fish? if it was medium sized, it might have been sick, and you should check the purity of the water and treat it with an external infection reliever (aquarisol, api products). this is the same with all sick fish. don't worry too much about your other fish if it was a small baby though
Are you good at telling if a platy is pregnant? Cause I think one of mine is, I filmed it and put it on youtube. If you cold checkit out and tell me what you think, it would be super :)
plz help me my platty gave birth to only 4 and they where all dead but she is still like an inch across her stomach im freakin out and i really care about her help plz help
i have just moved my swordtails guppies and what i thought to be platies in a larger tank... several days after they were settled i noticed that the female swordtails and platies were all pregnant.... i am possitive that i don't have a male platy but does anyone know if it is possible that the swordtail and the platy would cross breed???
Heyy! I have a platy just like yours, and she is pregnant (big belly and gravid spot). Right before they have their babies do their stomachs always turn a pinkish color like yours...or whats the sign that they are about to have them?...i don't want to put her in the cage early and get her stressed :/
@5teady hey i have a 1.5 gallon tank for my platyS. i have a sunset platy right now and it is a male. im going to the pet shop in a few days to get 2 females. i want them to breed as im going to give some to the pet shop and to my friends and famaly. my tank does not have a filter but i change the water like every week since its not a big tank and is easy to do.if i buy stuf to declorinatethe water and to get rid of amonia and stuff. will it be still be okay? plz respond! -Vanessa 12
@Mrgarfield423 Your tank does not have room for that many fish. The general rule is 1 inch of fish per gallon. Also the more fish you have the more waste is created the more levels of everything bad for the fish rise, without proper filtration this will kill your fish. Or the alternative would be cleaning the gravel and doing partial water changes at least every 3 or 4 days. You should already have water conditionar, tap water is harmful especially in a tank that small. Please do your research.
i got the same platy as ur..and my is making alot about 20 baby now..i i got the yellow and red kind...i also have some other fishes too..like sivler doller and catfish sucker...but i plant my tank with alot if fake plant for my baby to hide..my other fish don't like going in to the plant..they stay out of it..so my baby hide in it..only the rinbow shark go in it..but he don't eat them..i upload my tank when i have time..
go to fish forums . net and in to the livebearer section, there is a pinned thread in there what i wrote that tells you all u need to know. with pictures too
hello, i got a 54litro tank 60x30x30 and i have 2platy (couple) 1 male guppy a swortail(couple) a clow loach (translated my google ^^) and i have an inter filter should i keep the top part of the filter out of the water so that it hits the surface and makes bubbles or just leave it still underwater
First u really need to get another female platy and a swordtail female... the ratio of livebearers like these need to be 1 male to every 2-3 females so the male does not constantly chase just 1 female to breed with cos he will stress her out and it will cause probs )death at worst) Yes keep the internal filter a little out the water so the flow breaks the surface of the water, this is good for putting oxygen in the water.
If your planning on breeding your livebearers, u need to heavily plant the tank so fry have places to hide and survive. you really need another 10G tank ofr the fry to raise them cos in no time your tank will be over cowrded with the babies (fry) and it will cause problems for your water condition, you will get high ammonia and nitrite problems with a over crowded tank.
The clown loach will demolish fry so u will need to take that out if u want to breed.
also, if you dont want to heavy plant the tank, you could use breeding traps for the female to give birth in and the fry will be saved this way, but judment on when the mother is going to drop id vital and never leave the mother in the trap longer than 48 hours. Always note the drop dates of the babies, guppys and swords have fry every 4-6 weeks and can havefry for up to 6 months wihtout a male present oncce the female is pregant because she holds sperm packets.
Soon has she finished giving birth, fed her and took her out.
The mother should never be left in a breeding trap longer than 48 hours, if she still has not had the babies, she must be released or she may become very stressed.
could i keep the fry in a breeder tank untill they are big enough to do fish stuff round my tank ?? with out being eaten ?? plz answer before thursday. thanx
my Mickey Mouse platy just had her babies. I had her in a separate tank with lots of fake plants. But I only see 6 babies so I put her in a trap so if she has more they will not be eaten. Later tonight I will put her in another separate tank to recover. Am I doing the right thing.
Congrats! What is your Mickey Mouse platy's name? My black molly named Simba had 2 babies named Remy and Emile. They died! What were the baby's names?
5teady - i am not playing god. i have no breeder tank and nor do i wish to breed. what do you suggest i do? put the fry in an un-filtered tank? ofcourse not.
Alot of people let nature take its course. if they did then its sad :( i'd rather that than have an overcrowded tank!!
Yes put them in a unfiltered tank, hr fry would produce very little waste so nitrites and ammonia would not build up to dangerous levels providing you changed the water daily (say 30% of it)..
Also maybe scoop the fry up and take them in to your local fish store, or get a trap and put them in it, and advertise free to good home.. so many things u could do to save them.
technically "playing god" WOULD be intervening, doing nothing is just letting nature do it's thing. (having said that, i totally agree with saving the babies)
In "nature" there would not be as many fish together. Thus giving the babies a LOT more chances to get away. And there are also a lot more places to hide, and things to munch on for them.
yeah i realize its not really nature...im not disagreeing, just playing devils advocate i guess. i mean, keeping a fish tank in general is playing god, technically.
As I can see you are experienced enough in order to help me. I have a question that bothers me a lot today. My female platy seems to give birth to sth that is not actually a baby but sth like white eggs. I have noticed that there is a platy baby hiding somewhere in the aquarium too. Can you please tell me what does these white eggs are?
thank you, I guessed that after I thought about it...I was like dude why would they be letting her eat them? But like I said I don't really know platy's pretty cool vid though, Informative. I've helped midwife everyrhing from goats to pigs to calves to humans, but never I've never seen a fish give birth. Pretty cool stuff!!
Mainly through experience over the years, but there is signs to look for, like the fish will square off so her belly will look like this \___/ and from over head view she will be ball shaped like on her bally ()
When they are rady to drop they start dwelling, or hanging around near internal filters or heaters, lose appetite, hide away, lots of signs but i aminly go on thier belly size... also write down the drop dates, you will start to see a pattern.
omg I never saw a guppy giving birth!!!!! Anyway I just bought a male and a female guppy and they're following each other does that mean they're getting married? Oh also if my Female guppy giving birth what should I do?
what you do is take a big cup and put some of the tank water in it and isolate them for a little bit like a day theyll be fine then drop em in the tank:)
i am on that weird part of youtube again

Is there a way to tell for sure cause I definitly don't have enoug room for fries.

how long will babies take to grow?
i didn't know i had female platy, until i found out 2day when i was going to feed them. i saw little baby so I separated all other fish in a big bowl as i couldn't separate babies because they are too small and kept the babies and mother platy in the tank. shall i separate mother too after when she finish giving birth? please help.....anyone any advise. thank you :)
999KAPASIA999 1 year ago
@999KAPASIA999 seperate the mother otherwise she will eat the babies..... invest on some moss. that way if she gets prego again and have the babies they can just hide in the moss

@NaomiHa thank you, and yes i have already separated mother platy from that tank.i still see a black on mother platy's belly, does it mean its still pregnant?
is all the baby platy gonna look like mother fish or they will change after?
999KAPASIA999 1 year ago
@999KAPASIA999 babies can get big enough to live substantially w/ other fish in about 2 weeks or less
scratchmaster101 1 year ago
@scratchmaster101 ok i found 1 baby fish dead on the gravel then i put back mother fish and neon tetra in the tank and other platy and gupppies are separated from babies.
999KAPASIA999 1 year ago
@999KAPASIA999 okay. you can put lots of real or (preferably) artificial foliage in your tank to protect the babies as a place to hide. how big was the baby fish? if it was medium sized, it might have been sick, and you should check the purity of the water and treat it with an external infection reliever (aquarisol, api products). this is the same with all sick fish. don't worry too much about your other fish if it was a small baby though
scratchmaster101 1 year ago
@scratchmaster101 they have grown but still small. i dont know its my firs time looking after baby fish..so don't know if its medium size.
hoping rest of them are fine.

i have just moved my swordtails guppies and what i thought to be platies in a larger tank... several days after they were settled i noticed that the female swordtails and platies were all pregnant.... i am possitive that i don't have a male platy but does anyone know if it is possible that the swordtail and the platy would cross breed???
dudeinasuit1 1 year ago
@dudeinasuit1 any livebearer fish can cross breed (like my mollie + Planty) or (mollie + swordtail ugly thing)
Tapil 1 year ago
@Tapil Thats not correct..
These are ones that can and cant breed together.
Guppies & mollies - yes.
Platies & swordtails- yes.
Platies & mollies- no.
Swordtails & mollies- no.
Guppies & platies- no.
Guppies & swordtails- no

-Vanessa 12
Mrgarfield423 10 months ago
@Mrgarfield423 Your tank does not have room for that many fish. The general rule is 1 inch of fish per gallon. Also the more fish you have the more waste is created the more levels of everything bad for the fish rise, without proper filtration this will kill your fish. Or the alternative would be cleaning the gravel and doing partial water changes at least every 3 or 4 days. You should already have water conditionar, tap water is harmful especially in a tank that small. Please do your research.

How was that? aqua safe is only a dechlorinator and is cimpletely harmless to fish even in high dosages

hello, i got a 54litro tank 60x30x30 and i have 2platy (couple) 1 male guppy a swortail(couple) a clow loach (translated my google ^^) and i have an inter filter should i keep the top part of the filter out of the water so that it hits the surface and makes bubbles or just leave it still underwater
PS:give me some tips on breeding and such
tize79 1 year ago
Hi,
First u really need to get another female platy and a swordtail female... the ratio of livebearers like these need to be 1 male to every 2-3 females so the male does not constantly chase just 1 female to breed with cos he will stress her out and it will cause probs )death at worst) Yes keep the internal filter a little out the water so the flow breaks the surface of the water, this is good for putting oxygen in the water.
5teady 1 year ago
If your planning on breeding your livebearers, u need to heavily plant the tank so fry have places to hide and survive. you really need another 10G tank ofr the fry to raise them cos in no time your tank will be over cowrded with the babies (fry) and it will cause problems for your water condition, you will get high ammonia and nitrite problems with a over crowded tank.
The clown loach will demolish fry so u will need to take that out if u want to breed.
5teady 1 year ago
also, if you dont want to heavy plant the tank, you could use breeding traps for the female to give birth in and the fry will be saved this way, but judment on when the mother is going to drop id vital and never leave the mother in the trap longer than 48 hours. Always note the drop dates of the babies, guppys and swords have fry every 4-6 weeks and can havefry for up to 6 months wihtout a male present oncce the female is pregant because she holds sperm packets.
Any more qusetions just ask. :)
5teady 1 year ago
how long did u keep the mam in the birthing tank?
kjandkat 1 year ago
Soon has she finished giving birth, fed her and took her out.
The mother should never be left in a breeding trap longer than 48 hours, if she still has not had the babies, she must be released or she may become very stressed.

how big have your platies gotten? i have heard any where between 2 and 3 inches max for females and 1.5 and 2 inches max for males?
2wheels4life 2 years ago
my Mickey Mouse platy just had her babies. I had her in a separate tank with lots of fake plants. But I only see 6 babies so I put her in a trap so if she has more they will not be eaten. Later tonight I will put her in another separate tank to recover. Am I doing the right thing.

I noticed platy mother put fry in mouth. Is it eating or just place for fry safely? After birth, Do you have remove mother?
Kristycoon29 2 years ago
None of the fry went in her mouth, they all fall safely to the lower section of the trap.

how hard is it to maintain a planted tank?
xlsn1perlx 2 years ago
Not very hard at all, good lighting, is important, and using plant feeder meds.. pretty simple and straight forward.
5teady 2 years ago
5teady - i am not playing god. i have no breeder tank and nor do i wish to breed. what do you suggest i do? put the fry in an un-filtered tank? ofcourse not.
Alot of people let nature take its course. if they did then its sad :( i'd rather that than have an overcrowded tank!!
HollieDahhrlinn 2 years ago
Yes put them in a unfiltered tank, hr fry would produce very little waste so nitrites and ammonia would not build up to dangerous levels providing you changed the water daily (say 30% of it)..
5teady 2 years ago
Also maybe scoop the fry up and take them in to your local fish store, or get a trap and put them in it, and advertise free to good home.. so many things u could do to save them.
5teady 2 years ago
My platy died afterwards she gave birth :(
I didnt want to breed so i just let nature take its course, if they die then unforunately they die, if they live then they live .
HollieDahhrlinn 2 years ago
So you enjoy playing god then? them babies can easily live with your help!!!!!!!
5teady 2 years ago
technically "playing god" WOULD be intervening, doing nothing is just letting nature do it's thing. (having said that, i totally agree with saving the babies)
unsightlyboot 1 year ago
In "nature" there would not be as many fish together. Thus giving the babies a LOT more chances to get away. And there are also a lot more places to hide, and things to munch on for them.
TheAegos 1 year ago
yeah i realize its not really nature...im not disagreeing, just playing devils advocate i guess. i mean, keeping a fish tank in general is playing god, technically.
unsightlyboot 1 year ago
I'm sorry to hear that.

I don't really know platys that well, but...is she eating her babies?
FiestyCat86 2 years ago
@FiestyCat86
No the babies are fallinh through in to the bottom section of the breeding trap.
5teady 2 years ago
thank you, I guessed that after I thought about it...I was like dude why would they be letting her eat them? But like I said I don't really know platy's pretty cool vid though, Informative. I've helped midwife everyrhing from goats to pigs to calves to humans, but never I've never seen a fish give birth. Pretty cool stuff!!
FiestyCat86 2 years ago
@5teady how do you know when to place your pregnant platy in the breeding trap?
chris23a1 2 years ago
Mainly through experience over the years, but there is signs to look for, like the fish will square off so her belly will look like this \___/ and from over head view she will be ball shaped like on her bally ()
When they are rady to drop they start dwelling, or hanging around near internal filters or heaters, lose appetite, hide away, lots of signs but i aminly go on thier belly size... also write down the drop dates, you will start to see a pattern.
5teady 2 years ago
That is a VERY nice coloration for a platy!

omg I never saw a guppy giving birth!!!!! Anyway I just bought a male and a female guppy and they're following each other does that mean they're getting married? Oh also if my Female guppy giving birth what should I do?
