I love the Disney version with all my heart even if it isn't the true story, sad endings aren't really my thing, but I don't think anyone can dislike Hans Christian Anderson's story. It's brilliant and amazing. Buuutt I still don't think i'm going to watch this, I'm worried it'll be too sad :'(

oh so this is the original story of the little mermaid? how interesting because i was watching kdrama "secret garden" and they kept bringing up the little mermaid @the end she turns into bubbles. Lol so this was what they meant. i thought korean people had their own sad love story of little mermaid but it was actually from this.

@Saffy123100 In this version, I think she turns into bubbles. In the original version, she died and turned into sea foam, and I believe she ended up going to heaven. I have to check it. I always loved this version of the story. Felt more true and heartfelt, if not a bit dated.

In the version I have of the story, her body turned to foam but she then was rewarded with a soul for not killing the prince (as mermaids apparently do not have souls, because they are immortal) and had to complete more good deeds before entering heaven.

I have, to say this is better then disney even if it had a sad ending too it.

But, you have to remember Disney is still bringing back these fairytales. Nowadays theres just stupid cartoons with no plot or anything to it. Most, movies are sinking low in this time i give cheers to disney for keeping these old fairy tales alive.=)

You know, the reason that Marina couldn't speak up is because the Sea Witch took her voice away. So she couldn't tell him that it was she, not the Sumio Princess, who saved her life. So you could add this to the morale: You must be allowed to speak up in order to gain your love. That's something that the Sea Witch took away from Marina. I wonder if she wanted the Prince to marry another.

I saw this movie when I was really, really little, and it broke my heart. Even when I was a toddler I could tell this was a sad movie, and today it still makes me cry. I've always loved this version more than the Disney version. On the subject of love, this movie felt ten times more sincere even though she didn't get her happily ever after. my 6 year old niece was clicking on related videos on youtube. I heard the same song over and over so checked on her- she was crying. After watching this she had gathered what the plot was (minus the turning to foam bit) and found it so sad she was crying. She's never seen the film.

Well yes the ending is sad, the acual author of the little mermaid had a sad past, he also wrote the story the steadfast tin soilder which also had a sad ending, the little mermaid was a story he wrote, in greif of how lonely he was.
