Metallica's okay, they had some pretty good albums. But most of their fans have never heard much other metal so they are, umm I don't like to say "overrated" but, well, they could be better considering their popularity.

I'm kind of surprised to see so much Metallica hate here, and even more surprised to see how many thumbs up these comments managed to gather. Don't get me wrong, these guys didn't produce anything good for DECADES, but someone who enjoys metal music cannot blindfold himself and pretend Kill'em All, Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets never existed.

These are some of the best albums ever, and I say that as both a huge Blind Guardian fan AND someone who really hates new Metallica.

On the discussion of the first metal bands...I started with Iced Earth's "Horror Show" Rotting Christ's "Triarchy of the Lost Lovers" and Led Zeppelin II.

Iced Earth led me to Demons and Wizards and that led me to Blind Guardian and all the epic Pwer, Pagan and "VIking" metal.

Zeppelin brought me through the rest of the classics.

And Rotting Christ showed me the wonderful world of the extreme genres.

No, but what, seriously? You actually think Maiden's golden era in the 80's with Bruce Dickinson is crap? I prefer Paul Di'Anno to some degree too, and Bruce does have a tendency to go too far into the operatic side of things at times, but I'd hardly call albums like Piece Of Mind and Somewhere In Time crap.

I admit that Metallica is overrated. I prefer Slayer and to some degree Megadeth, and also Exodus, old Sepultura and Exhorder.
