@123Comrade perhaps the quality of fun is different, I also play video games but once you finish it...and then that's it....medals, awards unlocked and things. but when you play good old toys especially the ones that you have to build first, once you finish it you'll get a special quality of fun and also pride...I do video games and also toys.
It is amazing how toys can define who u are in life, my parents instead of Nintendo they bought me Lego and Mechano and now I am an Engineer and Architect. I remember building houses with my legos and the basic landmarks with my mechano set. Lucky also to have had a train set and lots of Airfix models but I never had a scalelextric set!
The best part about James May, that sets him apart from most other presenters of such programmes, he doesnt just present, he gets himself involved, entertainined and absorbed into all that he is doing. And the magic is, he makes us feel the same way too. Bravo James May, bravo to this wonderful programme you have made.
People are getting stupider and stupider. I went to Toys R Us the other day and saw that the toys are no where near as sophisticated as when I last went 10 years ago. Even video games nowadays are prompt by this and putting out games that are simpler and simpler. It's a sad trend really.
Here's an Interesting Tidbit of Information: the Engineers of the Chrysler Stow 'N Go Seating System, used the American Version of Mecchano (Known as the Erector Set) to Design the complex mechanism to Stow the Seat into the Floor of the Van.
It's funny how Brits have the same toys as we do in America but they are given totally different names. This is just what we call an erector set i think.
LEGO TECHNIC gives you the same insight of technical stuff. Or Fischer Technic.
Nevertheless, they are or were, great construction toys. What do have kids now? Nintendo's and Playstations. At 56, I still enjoy building a walking dinosaur from Lego, building a rare Airfix model and teaching my daughters how to use a spanner,
@Brera011 I grew up with LEGO TECHNIC and loved it! My parents still keep all the cars, trucks and lorries that had all been, modified. Haha! Pneumatics, sprung shocks, gears, motors, self made winches... I was fortunate also to get a Meccano set, but sadly couldn't quite catch on with it, and the part of the world I came from didn't carry them.....loved playing with both sets though! And yes, I still tinker with mechanics, as my career today =)
So this show brought back memories of my good old days playing with real toys and not some computer games that I played as a teenager(computers caught on in india around 1995 - got popular by the turn of the century).
And sadly, i was one of those millions of idiots who fell into cheap computer games. I am gonna buy myself a mechanO AGAIN ! :)
Gads! I'm so mad. I have one of the largest Erector sets you could get back int eh 1980s... and I love it. I learned basic engineering from it and to see the sheer scope of Maccano, gears, chains, drive shafts, pulleys, and all, I could have learned and done so much more before I was ten it just blows my mind.
Love your series and all,
But screw you for dissing the Wii pal!

Typical of modern construction projects
- Engineers come up with practical, elegant and highly efficient solution
- Architects come up with whimsical, impractical and ugly solution
- Owner tells engineers to make Architects solution work (i.e. ask the impossible).
