His voice range is sometimes called "European Baritone" here in the states. this indicates a baritone voice that is a little brighter at the top, with maybe one or two notes more at the top. Of the baritones singing today, he has the most seamless sound throughout. There are specific techniques he uses to achieve the warmth and richness that make him one of the most sought-after baritones in the world.
Hvorostovsky has to be one of my favorite baritones of all time. His voice has such a rich sound, and full body to it. I would love the opportunity to get to see him in person. I appreciate the fact that he puts so much into the music.
@kleinbittersdorf I'm guessing you aren't a vocalist, nor do you likely study music. He's one of the best upper baritones around today. His voice is very clear and although it isn't as large as other singers, he projects it better than most singers could ever hope to do. His diction and intonation are very precise. He isn't overbearing with vibrato either.
This is beautiful. I would love to hear him sing live one day.
Hvorostovsky has an unbelieve voice. I listen to him over and over. For the purist who wishes to hear the "Ombra mai fui" by Handel by a counter tenor, may I suggest a video clip by the Canadian counter tenor David Daniels. He is very, very impressive. I also listen to Youshikazu Mera singing the same. It is difficult to judge who the winner is. All three men are incredible talented.
@GosfordAbercrombie Yeah better to listen to it with a vibrato-less baroque "specialist", if only one could stay awake listening to those sexless things......
I recorded myself singing this on my channel. I don't think I am on a par with Mr. Hvorostovski by any means. I think I am a little deeper (Maybe Bass-baritone). Tell me what you think.
I think Mr. Hvorostovsky is the best baritine of our time. This piece is hard to make sound good with a lower voice and he does it beautifully. I could listen to him all day.
I think that this is remarkable for the way he can take that resonant 'chest' sound up through the register and even mezza-voce - whatever one's thoughts on taste or musical fashions it is a fine voice.
@Axelandir It's an aria for a castrato, really. So should really be sung by a woman or a counter-tenor, since castrati are in such short supply. Not really very good sung by a deep male voice. Listen to Larmore or von Otter sing it!
I quite like it being sung by Dimitri-the deep male voice, I've heard it many times sung by women or a counter tenor so its nice to hear a different approach. You should listen to Paula Rasmussen though, her performance in Serse is incredible.
I have now-thanks for the recommendation, its another amazing piece sung by her from what I heard. That particular production she is in looks unbelievable, I don't think youtube does it justice but I'm glad its on here. Still I wish I could see it in person.
Gorgeous. He gazes into the camera around 1:43 just like Nureyev did in the famous interview following his arrest. Very effective. Beautiful trill. So Russian a performance.
It appears to be ovious that just about every singer desires to sing this extremely popular aria; some do so better than others. Certain voices, however, naturally are better suited for one piece or another. This performance sounds like a flute composition played by a trombone. Everyone has his own taste; but for me, I am able to control my enthusiasm for this result.
@classicabaritone92 Best version??? Probably because he is demonstrating what big voice he has got at the places wher the text speaks about "soave" and "soave piú". An energy machine probably would understand more about the emotional content of the words and the expression of "soavitá".
Did this guy understand what is going on in this wonderful aria? Does he understand the text? "Soave" means soft and "piú soave" means very sweet and soft. But he is only showing what a rhich and big voice he has got and how wonderful he is. But this is the way, how people like singers have to be... Narcistic and selfinloved instead of surrending their gifts to an interpretation, which at leat asks in which situation Handel was putting the protagonist.
Me interesaría tu apreciación. Lamentablemente no cambiarás al público. Le encanta los cantantes enamorados de si mismos y castigan a las personas modestas.
Very nicely sung. Great aria. But IMO it sounds best of all in countertenors renditions. The most beautiful version I've ever heard is Nicholas Spanos's.
i respect him a lot. however...he does concerts to gain a magnum salary and has sung with the trashiest garbage russia [and other lands] have put out there. one may argue, this is his attempt at bringing more 'serious' music to the public which is mostly unaware even of this 'standard hit' ... others might argue he's been consumed by fame. also he's about 5 feet tall. microscopic. and this performance is dead,....tomb dead, funeral tirade of an annoyance, no? but still, go dima. he is too cool.
@SoHoPizza143 anyone can sing this aria! that why its written in two different keys...maybe you dont think he can sing it because you have heard only tenors and sopranos sing it but just try to enjoy the music! its quite beautiful
Must be the "integrity" of the presentation of this soulful aria but Hvorostovsky's as well as Tito Schipa's are my favorites. I still think it belongs to the upper register of a mezzo,of course, the countertenor as well as the boy's voice. Yes, it's H's integrity---remember so well @ Carnegie H his encore with no music singing alone a haunting Siberian song & deeply moved as were all!
What a surprise! I expected a countertenor's soaring voice and I got a rich and marvelous baritone! It's quite interesting to hear the piece sung in such a low key though.
I heard a young italian bariton in Milan with a voice so charming and warm that it was really difficult for me to say who would be better between him and hvorostovsky..
I think he has a really beautiful voice, but still prefer the countertenor or mezzo voice instead. It's like pavarotti singing o mio babbino caro.... maybe sounds great, but not the original idea.... And again, dimitri is a GREAT voice...
Dmitri is magnificent. My vocal coach (Italian) would not let me sing "Ombra mai fu." But have your heard the contralty Kathleen Ferrier. Only recently did I discover her on the internet. Her career was 12 short years before she died so that is the reason she is not well known. Her performance is most reverent and heart felt but NOT effected.
A Handel type sensibility in this aria is missing: he's pushing too much. It is not a blockbuster aria and needs a lighter/poignant touch IMO, as the words don't match the force of his voice. This isn't Onegin. He's got a good voice for sure but maybe not for this in this way. I heard him @ his Carnegie Hall recital and he sang material that matched his voice better and he sounded super. This clip is puzzling indeed for such a noted baritone.
@dt195k2 What are you talking about? He is singing it, let him sing it his way. Were you there when it was first performed? No, I think not, pretentious jerk!
If anyone knows where I can get my hands on the 1917 recording of this work by Louise Homer, either on CD, tape or vinyl, I'd be eternally grateful. Why the BBC isn't allowed to sell copies of its exhaustive library, I'll never know!
Oh my God!! How refreshing to hear a baritone. Seems like every male classical singer wants to sing as a countertenor. I find this performance a gem!!!
@samuelus12 THIS is a piece composed by Handel for a COUNTERTENOR. For this reason it's usually sang by sopranistes and countertenors. Classical male singer didn't WANT to sing like countertenors... You can be a countertenor or not. And this isn't a bad thing.
@panzzzzz It does not matter which voice is singing, it matters how someone sings. And to be louder than loud when the words are "soave" seems to be the ultimate interpretation. :-)
The concert platform has always the medium whereby singers can perform music that they would not otherwise. Wagnerians sing Handel, Mozartians sing late Verdi - all a joy when done with artistry. As here. (My Gott - he's gorgeous!)
He is one of the greats: there seems to be, and has been, an obsession with tenors....it is great to hear a great bari every now and then, and Dmitri is one of them, no contest!
if you are trying to be a purist maybe you can find some guy who had his balls chopped off to sing it for you. I like this version better than the castration option.
First of all, my dear, you could speak a bit friendlier, because everybody has his own opinions and should be allowed to.
Secondly I didn't want to say it's INVARIABLY for a counter- but i think, even though it would have been written for an bariton/bass it hadn't pleasure me.
Do you remember in what century we live?! Do you know that there are no castrati anymore? Only countertenors. If you have no idea what it is I'll tell you that they are not castrated. So, if nobody heard castrati how can you compare this version with "the castrati option"?!
OK, I listened to her version and didn't find it the best at all. To my liking too much vibrato! You suggest an alternative to a man's voice(baritone) only a female mezzosoprano? In my opinion more logic to compare it with countertenors' versions. I find the best Ombra mai fu Kowalski's version. Have you also listened to Spanos, Scholl, Lesne, Daniels, to name just a few? One of the greatest versions is Daniel Taylor's but it's not available on YT... It's my opinion.
Exquisite. I listen to him sing this over and over again. And by far, he also beats all the sopranos who seem to scoop their notes. And he's gorgeous to look at. Perfect voice for this beautiful aria.
What do you mean that sopranos scoop their notes? Male sopranos or female? Also soprano notes are different from baritone ones. So in what exactly he beats all the sopranos?
I've since heard some female sopranos who did not scoop their notes on this song--such as Anne-Sophie von Otter--just exquisite. Please listen to her. No, the notes are not different from one range to another. The scooping is an occasional slurring getting from one note to another rather than crisply landing on the actual note written.
I've listened to her version and don't think that it's exquisite. By the way, she isn't a soprano but a mezzo. Tastes differ. I prefer countertenos' versions and don't find at all that the best ones scoop their notes. The best version is Kowalski's. That's exquisite! I still think that this aria's magnificent vibrati, these e.g. a-ma--bi--le sound most beautiful in high male voices. Hvorostovsky's version is wonderful too but in an absolutely different way! Though it's only my opinion.
Yes, von Otter is a mezzo like me (but--- sadly for me--there the similarities end! There are plenty of sopranos singing Ombre.... on YouTube--many of whom are scoopers. But I look forward to hearing Kowalski--thanks for the lead. Oh--just my personal preference--I enjoy the other ranges more than the counter-tenors. I am going to try to listen to more counters to see if I can "expand beyond my horizons!" Thanks.
Me gusta muchísimo!

It certainly could be sung by a male countertenor and would probably sound better than most female sopranos.

Please, talk about something you know...
By an Italian sopranist (countertenor).

@Nicrossmen
i believe this aria was written for a little thing called a castrato.... A dude who was castrated while still a boy.
Countertenors are the 21st century's poor substitute.
This aria is thus fair game for anyone to sing. until we get in the habit of mutilating young boys again.
killabotpegasi 1 year ago 2
@samuelus12 It may seem that way because this song was written for counter-tenor...So yes, most men singing this will sing it as a countertenor.

Xerxes' role was intended for a countertenor :P
panzzzzz 1 year ago
@panzzzzz It does not matter which voice is singing, it matters how someone sings. And to be louder than loud when the words are "soave" seems to be the ultimate interpretation. :-)

@samuelus12 This is a wonderful rendition but Handel wrote it for a castrato, so a countertenor is more authentic.
woolwine100 1 year ago
@woolwine100 a singing castration victim would be even more authentic, if "authenticity" is your obsession
... while you're waiting for him, the rest of us will enjoy Hvorostovsky

@samuelus12 That is a ridiculous comment about the countertenor.

Indovinelli ? counter tenor Listen to Carusos recording .

Oh, i don't like this..
It's a song for a counter and should be sang fine and quiet- heartful..
And i don't like his theatralic gestures with his arms.
He should sing maybe opera of Wagner or whatever, but that is not good for him..
Indovinelli 2 years ago
if you are trying to be a purist maybe you can find some guy who had his balls chopped off to sing it for you. I like this version better than the castration option.
baritonebynight 2 years ago
First of all, my dear, you could speak a bit friendlier, because everybody has his own opinions and should be allowed to.
Secondly I didn't want to say it's INVARIABLY for a counter- but i think, even though it would have been written for an bariton/bass it hadn't pleasure me.
Indovinelli 2 years ago
Do you remember in what century we live?! Do you know that there are no castrati anymore? Only countertenors. If you have no idea what it is I'll tell you that they are not castrated. So, if nobody heard castrati how can you compare this version with "the castrati option"?!

why a bad coment?
I agree with you.

Hvorostovsky always was and remains forever the rough, non aesthetic Siberian villageman. That he ugly sings is the fact

Everybody is allowed to say what they think about this or that particular renditon. It's called sharing opinions. Express yours, but don't be rude!

Joyce DiDonato's version is the best I've ever heard. Check it out.

Is there a need for vibrato?

Exquisite. I listen to him sing this over and over again. And by far, he also beats all the sopranos who seem to scoop their notes. And he's gorgeous to look at. Perfect voice for this beautiful aria.

Agreed. You just took the very words out of my mouth. It's a very romantic piece at that.
HistoryGeek4U 2 years ago
What do you mean that sopranos scoop their notes? Male sopranos or female? Also soprano notes are different from baritone ones. So in what exactly he beats all the sopranos?
serenaluce 2 years ago
I've since heard some female sopranos who did not scoop their notes on this song--such as Anne-Sophie von Otter--just exquisite. Please listen to her. No, the notes are not different from one range to another. The scooping is an occasional slurring getting from one note to another rather than crisply landing on the actual note written.
meadowlark555 2 years ago
I've listened to her version and don't think that it's exquisite. By the way, she isn't a soprano but a mezzo. Tastes differ. I prefer countertenos' versions and don't find at all that the best ones scoop their notes. The best version is Kowalski's. That's exquisite! I still think that this aria's magnificent vibrati, these e.g. a-ma--bi--le sound most beautiful in high male voices. Hvorostovsky's version is wonderful too but in an absolutely different way! Though it's only my opinion.
serenaluce 2 years ago
Yes, von Otter is a mezzo like me (but--- sadly for me--there the similarities end! There are plenty of sopranos singing Ombre.... on YouTube--many of whom are scoopers. But I look forward to hearing Kowalski--thanks for the lead. Oh--just my personal preference--I enjoy the other ranges more than the counter-tenors. I am going to try to listen to more counters to see if I can "expand beyond my horizons!" Thanks.
