I've driven a detuned F1 car, and having had just a small taste of what these guys do on a daily basis has given me a much, much deeper appreciation of the real skill required to be a world-class F1 driver. I thought I had balls and wasn't afraid of much.
i just have one question. how is it possible to the camera on board to record the engine sound without being affected by the sound of the wind blowing in?
quite simple after year of rules made in order to stop Ferrari's domination and with a regulation not clear which has allowed the BrownGP to win a championship with a solution not in keeping with regulations
@wikicross In 1984 a track was built just to the southeast of the Nürburgring Nordschleife. This track was built specifically for F1 racing. From the mid '60s to the time this track was finished, the German GP was held at the Hockenheimring because so many drivers had died racing on the Nordschleife (it's not called the green hell for nothing). This is the circuit built for F1. This is the Nürburgring Grand Prix track. This is not the Hockenheimring.
@wikicross At 1:31 you can see the small bit of tarmac that connects the GP track to the Nordschleife (coming up on the left). There's another one connecting the huge south straight of the Nordschleife to the pit straight of the GP track. These connections are for when they run races like the 24 Hours of Nürburgring. The cars in races like that run on both circuits each lap so that they can use the pit boxes the F1 cars use. Also, they use that same start/finish line. :)
@wikicross Yes. You are most certainly not alone in thinking that. It is best to go onto Google Maps & look at the entire complex there roughly 100km south of the city of Köln ("Cologne" in English) in southwest Germany. That really explains it best. :)
Sorry to say Shoemaker fans but i can find iracing , wich is a Racing sim on the pc, more talented people than shoemaker , i can also say their lines are more accurate and more spot on , on every lap, and dont tell me it needs no skill, cose actually, it might even need more skill as you do not get the Motion feedback you get in a real car, so you are only depended on the visual feedback and sound you get from the tires to figure out when your on the limit of the cars grip
Might be true buddy, but in the real cars u hav to FIGHT the forces that gets u feedback. Fight on the steering wheel against them and as well in your seat against the massive G-Forces. Both of them u dont hav on your simulation. Sure they have more accurate lines cause their are no Forces (or low on ForceFeedback) u have to work against. Id like to see u driving such a car and then lets talk about that gain :D
@MsMCorleone how can u say that as always shumacher was behind Senna huh? if Senna was alive u think that for Sumacher would be the same? it would be more difficult for sure . i dont say that he isnt good
The data certainly favors Schumacher, though I would contend that if one were to omit the data from Senna's season with Williams, the results would look much different. In fact, it was THAT year after Prost retired and Senna was stuck with a crap car that Schumacher started to lead the field. Experience was making Schumacher faster, no doubt, but that timing can't be coincidence.
Looks like Vettel will be rewriting all the records, though. What a monster.
@MsMCorleone Where is Jim Clark ? He died at the age of 32 whereas he got 25 victories, 2 world championships, 33 pole positions, 32 podiums and he did only 72 Grand Prix....
Anyway i think you are right, Schumacher is the best but Clark is very very close to be the best ^^
@RottenAppleSeeds I wonder why people always say Senna was the best. Sure he is a legend, but I think his (very tragic) death makes him more of a legend. Senna "only" won 3 championships in his career. It's hard to tell how many more he would have won of course but still. Stat for stat, Schumi is miles ahead of Senna.
@1D0N you kind of answered your own question. i think had senna not died in that crash, schumi would not have won 7. senna was a driver of pure skill and talent. schumi was just fortunate enough to race in the age of electronics, and had no real competition. senna beat many greats who were in their prime, namely prost.
i think electronics nowadays plays too big of a role...which is another reason why schumi's having such a hard time making a comeback.
@RottenAppleSeeds Fair points, but in the end, it will always be hypothetical. We can only go by the things that have happened, as sad as they may be. So pure by stats, Schumi wins. Of course it being about personality and such, is a different story. But we will never know the definitive answer.
@RottenAppleSeeds Driver aids were banned for more of Schumacher's career than they were un-banned though. Although is 5 consecutive titles came partly in the period they were allowed, that was down to the Ferrari team he had built around him, not the aids.
You could argue that some drivers in his era had more talent than him, such as Alonso Raikkonen, Hakkinen and Montoya. But, like Vettel today, he won with his sheer determination and commitment.
@MsMCorleone he has still got it i think. remeber mansell was 40 when he won his f1 title and 41 when he dominated indycar. Just watch canada 2011 and spa 2011, totally dominant.
@MsMCorleone Sorry, I have to respectfully disagree with you on Schumi being the best. He does not posess the skill set of Senna (IMHO Ayrton Senna was the best F1 driver period) or Prost as for Fangio, Stewart & Alonso that's a toss up.
@cleonard19 It has nothing to do with money. Schumacher has earned over 100 million a year since 2002. You do the math. He just wants to race again for his love of the sport.
Senna won in Donninton 93 in the rain with a car full of electronic aids, while Schumacher had not any electronic aid. Even Michael Andretti in that Mclaren overtook Schumi! That was a joke!!!
But in Barcelona 92 in the rain, both drove with no traction controls, and Senna could not be as fast as Schumacher and finally Senna crashed trying to catch Schumi. First victory of Schumacher, Spa 92, and there was rain, beating Mansell, Senna... everyone !
I miss the days when Ferrari just dominated the F1...there was a magic about it that I think has been lost today. I also think schumi made a mistake by going with merc...I find it hurts his legacy because he simply isn't producing interesting results and is in the shadows. If he had somehow been back with Ferrari, the tradition, passion and emotions of the fans would have made this another magical moment in his career no matter the results...
@equitemcroce - Don't blame it entirely on the team and the car, please don't ignore the fact that Rosberg has been beating Schumi pretty much 9 out of 10 times. And Rosberg has even been on the podium, qualified into top 3 places etc. Face it, it's not the car, it's the driver. Schumi is getting old, and he simply does not have the pace anymore. Even if Schumi somehow crawled back into Ferrari, he would be absolutely harassed by Alonso's pace, or even get told to move out Alonso's way.
@equitemcroce I think you might be biased as a ferarri fan but for schumi I believe it's great to see someone not leave at the top of his game and actually get back to his passion and not be affraid of failure. I have more respect for him then if he would of left early. It takes guts to do what he did.
@gologabob Indeed, I am biased because I am a Ferrari fan...that's the thing with us Scuderia fans, our blood is Ferrari Red. Like I said, I wouldn't care if he came first or last as long as he was racing with Ferrari. He gave us enough wins so we don't need him to produce more. Seeing him race in that red car just brings up so many emotions that it would make it worth it. Have you any idea how nuts the Ferrari fan world went when he was going to come back to replace Massa during his injury?
@equitemcroce in my opinion the latter Ferrari years were the lowest point F1 has ever had. Since Senna died it has been going down hill dramatically and only in the last couple of seasons has it picked up again.
they are distroying the best motor sport on the planet F1..fucking english fuck, criminals..It has nothing to do with carbondioxide and greenpeace , its just propaganda against the human race, watch "The Alex Jones Chanel" on youtube, Burnie Its just another member of the globalists that run the world. 10K rpm and a 4 cylinder..what the fuck are you animals doing..without us the fans you will never exist..It is always what they want, Its never what we want..lets stop being sheeps spread the word
For the record, 2006 saw the highest RPMs ever recorded in F1. The V10 and V12s certainly sound better, but never revved higher than the 2006 V8s did. They will probably never rev that high again either. Its a shame really, as any piston engine spinning over 20,000RPM is truly a glorious sound.
@Ferrari512codalunga Proof Positive: That horrible noise you hear whenever Schumi is coming out of a corner is the sound of the TC decreasing the angle of the butterfly valves in the throttle bodies, thereby not allowing the car to snap into oversteer due to too much throttle. Check out an onboard vid from 2008 (no TC). Nothing but great engine noises.
@Ferrari512codalunga Hmm. I didn't notice that. However, I think that what is seen there is not oversteer induced via too much throttle, but rather oversteer simply because there wasn't enough rear wing angle to give the rear tyres enough grip to maintain their traction at that high of cornering speed. And as we all know, Schumi prefers a car that oversteers at the limit rather than one that understeers at the limit. So yeah.
@danthemanpatrick well, notice that the gurgling happens when the picture stalls somewhat. Cameras and audio equipment on the cars has improved due to new HD requirements that are being broadcast and as an aside there were audio faults in 2009 on many of the cars which were unexplainable by KERS. It sounded as though the cars were sporadically hitting far higher than the 18,000rpm rev limit.
@darkwingppk RIGHT!? Yes. Of course many people who drive cars like an SLS AMG or a Dodge Viper need TC because they're not necessarily the greatest drivers on the planet. But these drivers, quite simply, are the greatest drivers on the planet so really, where's the need for the TC garbage? SO glad it's gone.
I've always wondered why sometimes the drivers place either their right or left hand beneath the steering wheel, it looks like they're adjusting something.. Anyone knows why? (:
@heraps94 Well, unlike NASCARS where the cars only have two buttons; start and kill, modern F1 car in the other hand is the world's most sophisticated racing machine. On the steering wheel you can pretty much adjust every element on the car; from brake bias to fuel intake, gear ratio, wing, i mean pretty much anything you can imagine the driver can adjust on the steering wheel. Pretty cool he
A big part of why Schumacher is struggling is the ban on testing. He was winning championships when Rosberg was still sucking his momm'as titties.
Michael was away from the sport 3 years and the car is just not to his liking. Sure he is getting old and may be the sport has changed too much for his style (Hakkinen tested and was 3 seconds behind current lap times).
So? What matters is what happens NOW, not long ago. Right now Rorsberg is beating Schumacher in the same car. The ban of testing is to blame huh? Doesn't that ban apply to the other drivers as well??
Since the jury is still out on Rosberg and his ability one wonder how well Schumacher would do against Alonso in the Ferrari, Hamilton in the McLaren or Vettel in the Red Bull?
Fangio won his 5'th title in 1957 aged 46. Jack Brabham nearly won his 4'th title in 1970 aged 44.

@GRWarPig1 1993 season: Schumacher finishes 3rd in the WDC, Senna 4th.
1994 season: Schumacher wins first 3 races, Senna doesn't score a single point.
2001 season: Schumacher equals Senna's amount of wins in a car with bad reliability.
2006 season: Schumacher equals Prosts' and Senna's wins combined.
2011 season: Into his 40's and still being competitive!
If Schumacher is still getting points in his 40's, then surely Senna would've owned him in 93 and 94. It's just because Senna died.

@equitemcroce in my opinion the latter Ferrari years were the lowest point F1 has ever had. Since Senna died it has been going down hill dramatically and only in the last couple of seasons has it picked up again.
RelaxItsJustAFlare 7 months ago
@equitemcroce yeah but hes gettin £50 million for a 2 year contract lol, who wouldnt want that lol
ace666999 7 months ago
@equitemcroce he should have just quit. he pulled a major brett farve by even coming back. he just too old
ChristianSold1er 7 months ago
@equitemcroce the cars were a lot faster then, but I didn't like how Ferrari won all the time. Made it boring.

@equitemcroce well if his neck had not let him down when massa was indjured he likely would have been at ferrari...

I hate that nasty gurgling sound from the stupid traction control! It ruins the fantastic banshee whine of the engine!

@danthemanpatrick i don't think f1 cars used tc in 06 or any driver aid
Ferrari512codalunga 9 months ago
@Ferrari512codalunga Proof Positive: That horrible noise you hear whenever Schumi is coming out of a corner is the sound of the TC decreasing the angle of the butterfly valves in the throttle bodies, thereby not allowing the car to snap into oversteer due to too much throttle. Check out an onboard vid from 2008 (no TC). Nothing but great engine noises.
danthemanpatrick 9 months ago
@danthemanpatrick thx for the reply but i don't wanna seem like im arguing u make good points but check out the vid at around 0:21 thats oversteer.
Ferrari512codalunga 9 months ago
@Ferrari512codalunga Hmm. I didn't notice that. However, I think that what is seen there is not oversteer induced via too much throttle, but rather oversteer simply because there wasn't enough rear wing angle to give the rear tyres enough grip to maintain their traction at that high of cornering speed. And as we all know, Schumi prefers a car that oversteers at the limit rather than one that understeers at the limit. So yeah.

@danthemanpatrick The gurgling sound is an audio fault, traction control is the raspy noise you hear on throttle out of the slow corners.
harrisdamo 7 months ago
@harrisdamo I hear the raspy noise. But can you explain why there's no more audio fault sound after 2007?

harrisdamo 7 months ago
@danthemanpatrick well, notice that the gurgling happens when the picture stalls somewhat. Cameras and audio equipment on the cars has improved due to new HD requirements that are being broadcast and as an aside there were audio faults in 2009 on many of the cars which were unexplainable by KERS. It sounded as though the cars were sporadically hitting far higher than the 18,000rpm rev limit.

@danthemanpatrick you'd rather be in the wall?
i'll take gurgling over wall any day. :)

@danthemanpatrick I hate how they have traction control. Who the hell is driving the car, then... a person or a computer?! Lame as shit.
darkwingppk 4 months ago
@darkwingppk RIGHT!? Yes. Of course many people who drive cars like an SLS AMG or a Dodge Viper need TC because they're not necessarily the greatest drivers on the planet. But these drivers, quite simply, are the greatest drivers on the planet so really, where's the need for the TC garbage? SO glad it's gone.

I've always wondered why sometimes the drivers place either their right or left hand beneath the steering wheel, it looks like they're adjusting something.. Anyone knows why? (:
TheWinkingface 1 year ago
@TheWinkingface They're adjusting brake bias.
OMGtehWINNAR 1 year ago

Sure he is getting old and may be the sport has changed too much for his style (Hakkinen tested and was 3 seconds behind current lap times).
supercooled 1 year ago
@supercooled
