  • God, bruce johnston sounds like a girl when singing.

  • beach boys brings back summers of our youth--there will never be another

  • Carl was the soul of the Beach Boys - like Brian said

  • Love Carl's smile at 2:05. he's thinking: 'This is amazing!'

  • brian came back on tour in 76

  • RIP Carl Wilson, you had an epic voice!

  • I love it when Carl smiles on the video. I hope he is at peace. Love you Carl!!!

    Thanks for the video!

  • Bruce something or other on electric keys, Brian apparently on piano at the side of the stage ?? Bizarre. Can't tell if it was edited in, or if he was really there. But iirc, this was just about the same time that Brian finally re-emerged, appearing on SNL, so I guess it's conceivable that this is really him in the clip.

  • Pardon my ignorance, but is it Brian at keyboards?

Did he start touring back with Beach Boys in the '80s?

  • God only knows that Brian has a manipulating wife who using him for his money, who buys children as to take away from Carnie and Wendys trust funds.

  • Greatest American group ever! Earth Wind and Fire a close second.

  • @paulwg9659 or perhaps CHICAGO?

  • @loesepoes18

You are right. Chicago tied with EWF for close second place. Chicago is a great group with tons of great songs and a awesome horn section.

  • @paulwg9659 Yes! I agree! And EWF is so great.....

  • I wish I used this for our wedding song! THe first line made me change it, now I regret it : ( Great song!

  • It always brings a tear...

  • why was I born in fucking 1993??? 1943 would have been better, to live the best years in music history! 2000s to 2011 suck

  • @RankielGuitar I sympathize your anguish. I was born in 1945,and played in two different groups in the sixties and seventies. The sixties were magical: every group was different. You never knew what to expect from them. Wonderful years.

  • @RankielGuitar ....1974-2011 SUCK.

  • Respond to this video... 1974-2011 SUCKS

  • @Jimala3 1974? the eighties and over are good...

  • Nice job Carl.

  • if life was truly fair..then a carl wilson would not die from a brain tumor at the young age of 52...

    life sucks

  • @ChiroQuacker at the age of 51! He was just 51 birhtday was in december...... much too young! still miss him...

  • Beautiful.

  • My all time favourite song written by an absolute genius. Carl's voice was so beautiful.

  • I met Carl Wilson at a club in NYC and he was such a wonderful person - so genuine! He encouraged me to pursue singing which was always my dream. A great and gifted person.

  • Insn't Brian in high harmony here?

  • The "Beach Boys" who really aren't were my first concert ever. I have seen all the Classic Rockers who still tour, but i HATE that i was born post 1970 and missed them all in their prime. Music today blows, sans a few bands.

  • such a heart breaking story this band went through. I remember playing this song while driving to my grandma's funeral and crying all the way there in 2007. this song bring back so much great childhood memories. thanks brian and the boys

  • Carl was so underappreciated, especially by people like me. Sorry Carl, you were special!!!

  • Great comments about Carl. Simply the best. We sadly miss him but we still have this to listen to morning noon & night.

  • Carl, THEE voice of the BBs. God only knows! Thank you!

  • I love the head shake Carl does @2:06...like even he can't believe how good this sounds...

  • "God Only Knows" sung by Carl Wilson is the most beautiful song ever. Nobody ever had a bad thing to say about Carl. He is greatly missed.

  • Probably the "purest " song ever composed. Still stunning after all these years.

  • There are a few songs I can listen to over and over again without tiring ..this is #1 on that list...What a brother Brian is to give this song to his brother Carl to sing lead on....Carl Wilson "The Voice of the Angels".

  • God lent Carl Wilson to this world for just a little while. But, during that limited time that we all had with him, he gave us the greatest gift of his beautiful voice. Carl may be gone from this earth now, but we still have the precious memories and the music that was left behind. We will never forget you, Carl. You will be loved and missed forever.

  • what a cracking vocal & such a shame he no longer with us.excellant song a true classic.

  • the best band vocal in the history

  • RIP Carl

  • god only knows, god has this on his ipod, i know

  • That smile at 2:07...Oh My God! That was genuine happiness!

  • That song is so beautiful. Carl loved singing it too according to an interview.

  • Back in the days that people were actually able to sing themselves.

  • The Beach Boys not been the same since Carl passed.

  • This song is truly unsurpassable, no song can ever match its beauty

  • carl is truly an angel.

  • Carl has the voice of an angel, here and everytime, no matter what anyone says, Carl is beautiful and I love him.

  • @jammona

You are an ignorant sad bastard

  • jammona .only a dick would say that. and your a top grade dick.

  • Great song!

  • Thanks for posting this!

  • This must be from the Knebworth concert.

  • Yah-huh.

  • Carl has the voice of an angel!

  • Absolutely divine.

BTW, who does the vocal part from 2:05-2:012? It sounds like Brian in his prime, but since it's 1980, that's hard to believe.

  • Maybe Bruce? I dont think it was Brian b/c I have seen this whole concert and he does a part in surfer girl. It is isnt in his young falsetto.

  • Its Al Jardine on the falsetto at the end. Bruce is singing his regular part. At one point Al's falsetto was very similar to Brians, however he stopped singing the high parts in the 80's as singing them was affecting the middle range of his voice. If you listen to his vocal performances in the late 80's they are often quite ragged, however his voice returned to normal after he stopped singing the falsetto parts.

  • I am not sure when he came on but Jeff Foskett (sp?) sounds alot like young Brian.

  • Jeff became part of the Beach Boys touring band a year or two after this performance when Carl left to release his solo album. He took over most of the falsetto parts that Al had been singing for the past decade or so. Bruce originally sang Brian's falsetto parts live but could never really get the power into his vocals, Al and Jeff have much stronger voices.

  • Sounds like Al to me. Bruce is doing the echo to Carl's part.

  • Huh, that's crazy.

  • Yeah, Al sounded a lot like Brian in his prime, only for longer than Brian. Just listen to something like Then I Kissed Her - Al was fully capable of doing a Brian impression, but he also had a lot of power and a great tone in his own right.
