Having came to Cumbernauld 50 years ago as a five year old this is a facinating film outlining the original ideals , however since the town was handed over from the CDC to North Lanarkshire Council , the decline has been staggeringly swift to the now extreme embarrasment of the town centre
@sdenny Check my channel for the full 26 minute or so version in high quality. I can't agree with you more, I just wish someone could see (or should I say could have seen) the potential to save Cumbernauld as an example of utopian living and centralised building experiment. To me, it's a fantastic and interesting structure that was sadly mostly demolished (the original Copcutt areas where the depressing Antonine now sits). It's a shame really as I can't see it lasting another 20 years.
@sdenny I refer specifically to the town centre structure sorry, and also, do you have any interesting photos from all that time? Of the town centre perhaps?
It was thought out a great deal better than many new designs/projects and it worked....It still works!....If, but only if, it had been maintained and updated gradually/naturally as other suburbs, places are.... nevertheless... inherently good idea crumbling and degraded only due to neglect.!
Great piece of archive film. What's it Called, Ah, yes, ..........."CUMBERNAULD"
It's Changed So Much ;)

The sinister music at 2:58 is hilarious. Clearly a Paul Gadd crèche.

I have just noticed that this version has a different narration from mine, I assume they are both Magnus Magnusson though...strange.

@fishertwo2 Hi there, check my Cumbernauld video on my channel. You have an opinion exactly like mine. A place that is in a vicious circle.
