The Bullieds were the best Pacifics, state of the art steam locos & smooth running. The unrebuilt even look 'modern'.In the last days of Southern steam the Merchant 's were often touching over 100 mph!! coming up from Weymouth, going out in a blaze of glory!.
well i suppose they had to use a diesel as backup anyway or otherwise Tangmere wouldnt of climbed up a 1 in 37 bank. besides diesels are always good for backup on a special service incase anyhing went wrong
Actually it didn't sound as if the 67 was providing assistance. It was mainly there to provide ETH, and to assist if needed, which it didn't seem to be there.
I believe the max load for a light pacific in steam days was 200 tons. Tangmere was hauling more like 400 tons and going well. Maybe the 67 shut off when they reached the top.
wow! thats history repeating itself, the sounds, the sights, and the whistle of a Southern Bullied Pacific, thats a long living memory to never forget
A ghost of Exeter past... the haunting whistle, the classic sound of a bulleid pacific on home territory once more!! pity about the ugly thing attached to the rear though!
That is a climb and a half through that tunnel. I should know because ive done it on my pushbike a couple of times in the early hours!!

That's one nasty grade between St. David's and Central, I've heard one of the worst in western Britain.
Saw the Tangmere last year at Exeter, but unfortunately on the GWR line eastbound thru St. David's
There's a nice bar almost over the tunnel on North Iron Bridge Street, between downtown and St. David's, try Acocet Ale on tap!
