I was ready to bit her head off on this one as I love the original version...but this is very pretty! I don't know this lady but she has been recommended to me. I find her a cross between Dolly Parton and Barbara Streisand with a bit of Celine for good measure!
She sang this song because of the nuances and the fact that she could finally overdub her own vocals. It isn't her best but I don't blame her for the production value at all. Now if she could pull off the overdubbing of Karen Carpenter or Basia - then we would hear a true powerhouse. No matter what Linda is following her dream and I applaud her for that......
i think this song is to someone who is really a "both sides now" person...whoever reads this will know what i am saying...some kind beautifully lost...mainly at times, wants to be alone!!!
First would like to say I hope Linda reads all the comments here. The thoughtfullness put into the comments really demonstrate the quality of Linda's fans. Regarding this song: the melody & lyrics are timeless and multi-layered. This arrangment, production & vocal performance work for me. Linda's performance reflects yet another layer of this song while still maintaining the intergirty of the song. Bravo Linda. BTW did you all see Olympics opening cermemony- Both Sides now-Joni singing.
Beautiful like anything Linda Eder sings, but I feel that it is too "pop" to do the song justice. You can't hear the feeling as you can when Joni Mitchell sings it.
Thanks for the posting, I just love this Song & Linda Eder. Are you consider posting more of her songs from the same album, it would be lovely. Thank.
I don't think most of you are listening to this from the perspective I am. Linda is in her 40s as I am and to me this version is meant for someone in their 20s. I was truly expecting a more mature approach to the lyrics and arrangement. I love Linda as you all do as well. Go back and listen to "I Don't Know How To Say Good-Bye". That is the depth I wanted here.
I agree, Thumper. This was written by Joni Mitchell when she was much younger, and even she couldn't truly pull this off at the time. If you listen to her sing it in later years the depth comes through, as you pointed out. Linda has a gorgeous voice, but more edge and wistfulness is needed here...
BTW...ever seen Love Actually and Emma Thompson making a fuss over the Mitchell version of this song?
I completely disagree... the reason she recorded this song is because she had recently divorced her husband. If you truly listen to the lyrics this song clearly comes from the perspective of experiencing great love from a young age and then seeing the other side of love as you grow older and it falls apart. I think the arrangement is quite beautiful and it would have been too deep had it been overly emotional. True, no one can replace Joni, but this is very much worthy of praise.
Thanks, thunderroadgirl. It is a nice cover but, the Joni Mitchell 2000 version is the one to listen to. As it should be. I kinda expected more from Linda here myself.
Me too. I think Linda's the best singer above ground. But I think this album was too easy listening. The songs sounded the same, and they all had boring arrangements. I hate to say it, but I think this was her worst album-- a piece of glass among diamonds, so to speak.
try this - mix up all your LE albums (maybe on your iPod or MP3-player)so you have a bit of everything : a little bit of Broadway, with a slice of Jazz, combined with a pound of Big Band, seasoned with some Americana,a dash of Pop, add a cup of Christmas spirit and last but not least garnish it with a piece of Opera ! There... you have your personal Linda - brew! Doesn't it make you hunger for more? ;-)
that's why I love Linda.. she's so versatile! Nobody wants to do the same thing for 20 years or longer ! And Linda has the voice to do whichever style she wants. Life would be boring without variety! Maybe this piece (Both sides now) is not THE best one on the album but I'm sure the more you listen to TOSOM the more it will grow on you! Sometimes it also helps to get a bit more into the lyrics and their meaning! At least that's what I usually do!
The thing is, I like the songs, the arrangements seem a little on the slow side. I'm just used to her "Broadway My Way" album. And, thanks, by the way, for not biting my head off for having another opinion. :)
I feel the same as you. And, a message to Linda. Please, consult someone that understands this material. I have Vince Gill or Chris Isaak in mind. You have the voice to do anything!
She's got such a pretty voice.

Joni Mitchell's 2003 recording (Love Actually) is my favourite. It is so different to her '69 version which I also loved.

So she's like my third favorite for this song... I never heard Joni Michell's versions. This is a pretty song... I love Linda's voice.

thats so Funny!
i thought this was her least boring album
her voice is showcased really well on the others, but they tend to drag, and i hated almost everything Frank wrote
but i feel you
