What an awesome book and song! But it's a shame we can't download the song on the Scholastic website here in Australia. It's only for US and Canada readers which is a bit disappointing. Still, wonderful - our 3-month-old loves it!
Probably the best thing I've heard since the Fire Truck book by Ivan Ulz. I heard this at daycare, and I was laughing so hard! The toddlers were wiggling back and forth to it (their idea of dancing). I love it!
My kids got this from their Kiwi grandparents (and the bumblebee book, too). We love it so much here in Italy. Thanks, Craig! You're one of those greatly talented Kiwis that makes me homesick ;-)
First time I ever heard this song was about 6 months ago at my Twins Kindy, it was very very hard NOT too pee my pants. Then yesterday working in my sons school library I saw the list of Whitcoulls top 20 and it was on there. I then spent the next 90 minutes annoying the other mum singing the first three steps, however much it amused her. It is funny and kids LOVE IT, now I have watched it 4 times with my twins on line... - Well freakin' done.
Visited my son's preschool class today. They sang this song and I was like, "Ooooh! So that's what he was talking about the other day." I didn't understand all the weird things he was saying, lol.
My boys love this song- especially the bit where he smells really bad! (holding your nose and saying peeeyooo works well with 2 & 3 year olds- and ummm, older males). Can't wait for more of your songs! Thanks for fun family singing with over the book and CD Craig.
my daughters love it and i think it make the corolla go faster in order for me to get home sooner so i can turn it off cheers shaun australia but after a few beers my mates love it go figure
Fantastic Song Craig. We have just gone out and bought the book and CD. My daughter loves it, but probably not as much as me. And as for plagiarism, I sincerely doubt it. I have never heard anything like it and I congratulate you on your creativeness. Well done.
Im so happy ive found this on here... was sad that i did not know that craig was at Edendale school a few weeks ago, I realy need to buy the book for my kids! we love it!!!!!!!!!!! This video will keep my daughter and i amused all day :) Thanks for the great music Craig, you are awesome!
Hey CARRIEMINZONI, your a dick!! and I only read the first two sentences of what you wrote. Craig, I have 3 legs but they call me a horsey worsey tripod.

as far as i know, nobody has accused you of any copyright infringement because, naturally old jokes don't have copyright because the creator is unknown.you can't defend a claim of plagiarism by claiming there's no copyright. and it says a lot about YOU to claim ALL the wonky donkey jokes on the internet were posted after your song. WOW! you must be SOOOOOOO famous to have inspired a million joke sites to post "your" song.
I'm NOT claiming that I inspired the longer version. It's just that so far, ALL the sites I have seen say that the joke was posted AFTER I wrote the song. How could I have looked them up on the internet if they weren't already there ??. I'm confused you can't see this ??. Besides this, and I've explained this MANY MANY times now. I heard the joke, "what do you call a donkey with three legs" in a pub after a rugby game. I did not find it önline" I went home and added other nky words.
I am not going to add in the book that I saw it online, because I DID NOT FIND IT ONLINE. You are asking me to lie, because you have ASSUMED that's where the idea came from. You are WRONG. Now I feel that you are letting your EGO get in the way and refuse to back down on this and I'm not sure why ?. The fact that you think I'm telling lies after I've explained { and have about 10 witnesses } how I cam up with the song I think says more about YOU than it does about me.
@craigsmithkiwi Hi I love this.....I wish this sort of song was about when my children (now teenagers) were little. Well done. It brightened up my day! :) BTW in life there are always the odd discontented and miserable person out there, that have nothing else to do but leave grumbling, infantile comments. Be flattered that they took the time to do it on your site, even though it is not constructive and just plain old sour grapes!! :) :)
Finally, If you'd like to talk about this more. We can. I'm happy to talk to you face to face about this too. My e mail is craig@craigsmith.co.nz You can contact me at any time to talk about this option more. I only wish you had done this the first time you had this wrong assumption. We could have talked about this before you started down this road of speculation. I eagerly await your e mail. Regards, Craig Smith
@carrieminzoni I don't understand why you are soo offended by this song. Does it really matter that his inspiration for this song came from a joke?? some people write about their lives, their travels, their experiences, why not a joke?? All i know is my son loves it and thats good enough for me. Thanks Craig
there are a million links and ALL say it's an OLD MUCH-LOVED joke. so maybe you DO have a time machine? btw you should really get a dictionary and look up the difference between plagiarism and copyright infringement. the former means not acknowledging the source of material - which you obviously haven't done because you ADMIT it was "inspired" by a joke, yet haven't acknowledged the fact half the lyrics are the same as the joke in your book.
My son just got taught this song at kindy. I got to see you perform this at a school last year october and loved it back then. Now have a the wonkey donkey song running around the house all day long! When is your album with other songs available?? cheers

but how is putting an old joke to music original? if you google wonky donkey, you get the almost-exact-same lyrics in a million joke sites. i won't be buying it, sorry.
@carrie ..imo original wording or not, kids & parents still enjoy & benefit so it really matters not. A joke is not the same as an entire book & music, which children can interact with, have fun, & laugh. It also doesn't change the fact that it is a great book & song. It's a shame some kids will miss a great book based on that one (irrelevant!) aspect, i'm afraid your logic is lost on me.
Anyways, don't be sorry for your decision, maybe just lighten up a little, yikes! Peace
@carrieminzoni Broken record - you said that already on another post. Why knock someone who has successfully used a joke to made it into an awesome children's song?
