Hesse was a badass author. Along with the absurdly tripped-out "Steppenwulf" and a bunch of others he wrote "Der Magister Ludi (The Glass Bead Game)".

Read that shit, it's great. Steppenwulf is more action-packed, it may be a better Hesse introduction, but Der Magister Ludi and the others are outstanding also.

You could search for Acid Jazz. It´s more or less the musical genre groups like Thievery belongs to. Wiki has a nice overview of groups. It depends a little on your own taste which you like best. You could try some well known artists, like Kruder & Dorfmeister, Massive attack, Saint Germain, or Tosca. Have fun with the search!
