@clawtooth35 As long as he was polite, I don't really see an issue with him being irked with what the other person said. Do you like everyone you work with? Of course not; but normally you act like you do. It's sort of like the same sort of thing.
Just a small thing: your comments about R3 don't hold water to me. You say that "they add legitimacy when you approach other big youtubers or companies" and give "networking oppertunities", however, you are what I would call a "big name" youtuber yourself, and in my humble opinion, I have seen no other "big youtubes" require middle men like revision three to do either of these things. Be independant and stand on your own feet, you have proven you have the self-confidence and popularity to do so.
I kinda like you both, but I have more respect and admiration for Dan. He's put a hell of a lot of effort into Youtube, and his 'value' is not always measured by success it's more often by the power of lessons learned and overall interest.
maybe Banananeil tried to get views by luring Dan's fans with a video containing his criticism, like anyone cares...if I had the will to make videos, I'd make them like Dan does..keep up the good work Dan, and don't let those money addicted blood sucking corporations take your soul.... because you're awesome!
It's clear that banananeil modeled his youtube personality from Dan Brown's videos and found some people who liked his content. Somewhere along the way he had the audacity to tell dan how to make his own videos.
Something that really bothered me about BananaNeil's video was the part where he said that Dan "messed up" when it came to Dan 3.0.
Dan 3.0. was an experiment. A social experiment. And experiments, regardless of their nature, nearly always require a blind leap of faith. A risk of some kind. And sure, the results weren't quite the Pogotribe expected, but at least Dan had the guts to go for it. He took the risk and accepted the consequences.
Look, I think 17 year-old Dan would make other videos than Dan's videos today, but that's normal. Everybody evolves. And as Dan said: no-one except for himself can really know whether or not 17 yo Dan would watch these vids.
Anyhow, BananaNeil strikes me as a little immature and he seems to have a little bit of that troublemaker mentality I don't very much like. Dan said it as I thought it: misplaced confidence. Without being judgmental, he seems to be in need of some basic good manners.
Don't let that guy get you down, Dan. Sure, Dan 3.0 wasn't a massive success, but still--you had the guts to go for it. How many people can say that for themselves? And it's not like NOTHING good came out of it.
As for the new direction of your channel--I think you're definitely on the right track now. Just keep doing what you care about--we're still here for you. :)
Yeah, that video pissed me off when I watched it. A lot of the things he said were really judgmental and came from nowhere. I love the direction you are going in, Dan. Keep going with it. (And even if it didn't go according to plan, I still watched and very much enjoyed 3.0)
I also don't understand all of these comments saying that dan is treating us like customers kind of comments. I don't feel like that at all. I don't know where it's coming from, but I feel like that's disrespectful to him as well. He doesn't come off like he's manipulating us to me. He does come off as someone who enjoys youtube, respects his audience, and would be really upset if he thought we felt like he was condescending to us.
Take it easy Dan. He's just making a suggestion that a lot of people obviously agree with. Before 3.0 we were more your friends. Now it's like we're clients.
You went from a very, very large, engaged audience, to a smaller engaged audience. You didn't say anything to the contrary, but I really just wanted to say it. Your audience is NOT less engaged.
Dan, those are only suggestions... It's obvious how hurt you are, but don't lash out. Do whatever you want to do, sure, but accept all types of feedback. It seems only fair.
I really like this video because it shows more of who you are, behind the jump cuts so to speak. I think, if time is available, you should definitely do more things like this, it makes us feel like we know you more :D
I still enjoy your videos, but I agree with Neil that they have lost a lot of the exuberance they once had. I also agree with what Axarno123 said, this video felt like you were talking down to us, and especially to Neil, whose video I found to be completely respectful, even if you thought it was kinda harsh.
I was surprised by this response but thinking a bit further, I realized the problem isn't necessarily with Dan, but with us, the group of viewers who liked the old DBUniverse videos so much more than the new ones. Dan is clearly stating that he is happy with the videos he is making now, which, if you ask any YouTuber, is what YouTube's for. So instead of trying to force Dan into making videos like he used to, maybe us 'stuckinoldtimes' viewers just have to let go and move on to greener pastures?

The way I think about your content is similar to how I think of Blade376's content. You complain a lot, but you're entertaining, still finding your feet (as most people still are at any age), and I learn a lot from it. Carry on doing what you want to do, because we can tell when you're enjoying it, and it's when we find you the most engaging. I'm fairly certain I speak for a large proportion of your audience :-)

Isn't saying that Banananeil just did it for the views a lot like saying Dan just did it for the money?
Now that making videos for YouTube has turned into a profession, everyone is on new ground. I don't see the positive value in questioning motives and motivation. It all comes down to this: am I engaged, entertained, enlightened, astonished, or challenged? If a Tuber can find a way to make a living at it, good for them. I don't think that's a detriment.
Banananeil was clearly just using your "situation" because he thought it would get him views and attract attention. He's pretty much talking down to you and telling you what you should be doing, as if your years of experience vlogging count for nothing. I think you know a thing or two more than some 'lion' and wouldn't really take him seriously
I watched a few of banananeils videos just to see if he actually has credibility to say any of what he did. He really doesn't. He has no intellect whatsoever, no concept of reality, all his videos are of a ridiculous "wow, look how close I am to the camera so it will distract you from my lack of content" sort, and he puts on a video persona. Dan, you, on the other hand, are extremely intelligent and are one of the most "real" vloggers I've ever come across, whilst being able to keep the fun in.
And I also would have written more of why you're brilliant if youtube had let me. :P Just keep doing what you want to do, viewers or no viewers, and in spite of people like banananeil who can't hold a candle to you.
Dan I think you're a great youtuber, even through Dan 3.0 I still enjoyed the videos, people understood that your life was going through changes and difficult times so that's why the energy of the videos changed, I'm enjoying your delicious steak videos because they are thought-invoking and they make conversation within the community, keep doing what you're doing and just make sure its what you wanna do not what some other person thinks you should be doing

I agree with Dan. His channel is an extension of himself and he has every right to do with what he wants with it. Some ideas may be fantastic, some not so great but its his choice on what he puts up here. If he wants constructive input he will ask for it. Just telling him to up and quit it with Delicious Steak or with Revision3 is kind of ignorant. We don't know all of what goes on with him and Revision3 and we don't need to.
@ArielannaDragonBlood And asking him to go back to the "Old Dan"...... people grow up. And what happens when people grow up? They change. Their ideas, views and damn near everything changes. He is bound to change every now and then and its not up to us. Its his choice. Granted Dan 3.0 didn't go as planned but that's life. We can't always get what we want but we make the best with what we have and work towards what we want.

Hmm, after watching BananaNeil and you, I guess I need to say that yeah, I really agree with Neil a lot. I know it hurts to hear what people think about your views, but there is a lot you can take away from his video. You have to think. He seems like he was one of your Brownies when you first got your whole engaged viewership going, you know? I think you need more spunk, more youthfulness in your videos. I don't mind the ads, so long as you come back from the doldrums and march to your own beat.
Dan, I know this channel is personal to you, but you seem to have taken criticism rather personally. There's nothing wrong with being wrong, and so if the guy you're replying to WAS misguided - with good intention - and had no way of knowing better, I think it's unfair of you to be hostile, and this response does come across rather passive-aggressive.
I agree fully with the last bit: he talked ABOUT you TO his audience. If he would've been genuinely concerned about you, he would've addressed you directly. Your speech at VidCon kinda confirmed what I already thought: that the past few months have taken quite some emotional toll from you. I just don't think Neil picked up on that, or he wouldn't have been this hurtful. I support you in all your endeavours :-)

Dan was totally open to his arguments. He always has approached topics with an open mind. It's just that when someone makes totally preposterous and downright false claims about other people, they tend to be, well, pissed off.

Especially the part about Revision 3; where Dan goes on to say that yes, it sucks to have ads but it's important for him to be with Revision 3 for the sake of Networking for future jobs. I actually saw a few of your videos during DB3P0 but didn't want to subscribe. And because of Neil's video, and some people mentioning you in vlogbrothers comments recently, I've now subscribed. But I'm definitely rethinking reading or participating in the comments because some of these people are so rude, either to you or Neil. Way too many people who have forgotten to be awesome. Or just barely polite.
i agree with dan, the video was very harsh when speaking about the truth, and was also a bit unfair when touching on some ideas. to be honest with you (bananaNeil), Dan is a more interesting and mature person, and i have been watching dan for years. Never even hear of BananaNeil until today.
I think that Dan's show is perfect as it is right now. I really enjoy it!
The only thing I would change is the amount of vids you post. I think you post new vids way too seldom. Is there a specific reason for this? Like, maybe it takes longer time to make these videos, or maybe you don't have enough topics to talk about. If that's the case I think you should do some casual videos in between the more serious-topic ones.
This Neil guy has the right idea on encouraging you to reignite your awesomeness from D3P0 and before but his attempt at conveying the message was poor, you were kind of lashing out on Dan and not giving him advice but just trashing all the stuff you dont like vehemently. Delicious steak is just a cleaner, more grown up version of what Dan was doing before D3p0. He has grown up and that means his videos have to grow up too.
I have nearly unsubscribed from dan many times now. I'm not exactly sure why I've given him so many chances, because I'm just not interested in the majority of the videos he makes.
I'd say I agree at least 50% with the banananeil video response and less than 50% with dan's protection of his decisions.
I care about you Dan! I've been subscribed since DBU Season 2 and I'm going to stick with you regardless of what you decide to do with your channel. :) Still, I think you should at least consider some of BananaNeil's advice. For example, he said that getting back into the kinds of videos you did before would take some time, and that maybe jumping in headfirst is not such a good idea.

I agree with Neil in the sense that you have changed your methods, and not necessarily for the better. I found myself more entertained when you put more energy into the videos, and relied a bit more on the viewers.
The weeks just prior to the 3.0 change, when you asked your viewers to vote on minor decisions, and future video topics, were probably the best, and i would like to see you go back there. I dont think you should get rid of delicious steak, but i do think it needs changing.

Dan, the problem is that you keep finding excuses to do things that just don't work here on YouTube. When you put things on youtube, you /are/ doing it for an audience, and not just as an 'extension of yourself'.
@Yokailo Why can't it be both? I perform on stage sometimes, and I'm doing it both for the audience and to express myself. They aren't mutually exclusive. That's what the performing arts are about...they give joy to both the artist and the audience. That's the beauty of art.
@PockASqueeno Very true, but as soon as you start making youtube videos as your job, your primary function is to entertain an audience. Therefore your first priority should be the audience, and not whatever you think 'feels right' if that clearly isn't right.
I agree that the ideal situation would be the case where the artist can express themselves in a truly entertaining way, but as the audience really provides your income in this case first priority should be their joy, not the artist's.

Uh. My world just got so much smaller. This is the second time Dan has interacted with Neil via video response. It's how I found Neil in the first place. And I love watching Neil's videos. Yet am a pogotribe member too. I see Dan's point.
I don't get most of you guys who complain about what Dan does. He's being as honest with himself and trying to have the intellectual thought provoking discussions videos which was what the majority wanted but since it's not exactly like the old way with the spontaneous and sometimes arbitrary jumpcuts and the music in the background he's just so boring and uninteresting. I still find Dan to be entertaining without these gimmicks. I look over at Neil's attempt to copy Dan's old style and laugh.
I think the word Dan was looking for throughout this video was "speculating".

Just a small thing: your comments about R3 don't hold water to me. You say that "they add legitimacy when you approach other big youtubers or companies" and give "networking oppertunities", however, you are what I would call a "big name" youtuber yourself, and in my humble opinion, I have seen no other "big youtubes" require middle men like revision three to do either of these things. Be independant and stand on your own feet, you have proven you have the self-confidence and popularity to do so.

Something that really bothered me about BananaNeil's video was the part where he said that Dan "messed up" when it came to Dan 3.0.
Dan 3.0. was an experiment. A social experiment. And experiments, regardless of their nature, nearly always require a blind leap of faith. A risk of some kind. And sure, the results weren't quite the Pogotribe expected, but at least Dan had the guts to go for it. He took the risk and accepted the consequences.
That's something to be admired, not admonished.

Look, I think 17 year-old Dan would make other videos than Dan's videos today, but that's normal. Everybody evolves. And as Dan said: no-one except for himself can really know whether or not 17 yo Dan would watch these vids.
Anyhow, BananaNeil strikes me as a little immature and he seems to have a little bit of that troublemaker mentality I don't very much like. Dan said it as I thought it: misplaced confidence. Without being judgmental, he seems to be in need of some basic good manners.

I was surprised by this response but thinking a bit further, I realized the problem isn't necessarily with Dan, but with us, the group of viewers who liked the old DBUniverse videos so much more than the new ones. Dan is clearly stating that he is happy with the videos he is making now, which, if you ask any YouTuber, is what YouTube's for. So instead of trying to force Dan into making videos like he used to, maybe us 'stuckinoldtimes' viewers just have to let go and move on to greener pastures?

The way I think about your content is similar to how I think of Blade376's content. You complain a lot, but you're entertaining, still finding your feet (as most people still are at any age), and I learn a lot from it. Carry on doing what you want to do, because we can tell when you're enjoying it, and it's when we find you the most engaging. I'm fairly certain I speak for a large proportion of your audience :-)

Now that making videos for YouTube has turned into a profession, everyone is on new ground. I don't see the positive value in questioning motives and motivation. It all comes down to this: am I engaged, entertained, enlightened, astonished, or challenged? If a Tuber can find a way to make a living at it, good for them. I don't think that's a detriment.

I watched a few of banananeils videos just to see if he actually has credibility to say any of what he did. He really doesn't. He has no intellect whatsoever, no concept of reality, all his videos are of a ridiculous "wow, look how close I am to the camera so it will distract you from my lack of content" sort, and he puts on a video persona. Dan, you, on the other hand, are extremely intelligent and are one of the most "real" vloggers I've ever come across, whilst being able to keep the fun in.

I agree with Dan. His channel is an extension of himself and he has every right to do with what he wants with it. Some ideas may be fantastic, some not so great but its his choice on what he puts up here. If he wants constructive input he will ask for it. Just telling him to up and quit it with Delicious Steak or with Revision3 is kind of ignorant. We don't know all of what goes on with him and Revision3 and we don't need to.

Also, I pretty much agreed with most of the points Dan made. Thinking about the projects he's tried and the failures/success from his perspective, it seemed really mean spirited the way he broke everything down and stated his opinions as fact.

I agree with Neil in the sense that you have changed your methods, and not necessarily for the better. I found myself more entertained when you put more energy into the videos, and relied a bit more on the viewers.
The weeks just prior to the 3.0 change, when you asked your viewers to vote on minor decisions, and future video topics, were probably the best, and i would like to see you go back there. I dont think you should get rid of delicious steak, but i do think it needs changing.

Well, you lost my viewership during D3P0, but the second I realised you had stopped the project, I re-subscribed. Upon unsubscribing, I already agreed re-subscribe when D3P0 was done. Your videos were once awesome. And now they are awesome again. I'm thankful to see the Dan again who I subscribed to so long ago.

Dan, the problem is that you keep finding excuses to do things that just don't work here on YouTube. When you put things on youtube, you /are/ doing it for an audience, and not just as an 'extension of yourself'.

@Yokailo Why can't it be both? I perform on stage sometimes, and I'm doing it both for the audience and to express myself. They aren't mutually exclusive. That's what the performing arts are about...they give joy to both the artist and the audience. That's the beauty of art.

@PockASqueeno Very true, but as soon as you start making youtube videos as your job, your primary function is to entertain an audience. Therefore your first priority should be the audience, and not whatever you think 'feels right' if that clearly isn't right.
I agree that the ideal situation would be the case where the artist can express themselves in a truly entertaining way, but as the audience really provides your income in this case first priority should be their joy, not the artist's.

Uh. My world just got so much smaller. This is the second time Dan has interacted with Neil via video response. It's how I found Neil in the first place. And I love watching Neil's videos. Yet am a pogotribe member too. I see Dan's point.

I don't get most of you guys who complain about what Dan does. He's being as honest with himself and trying to have the intellectual thought provoking discussions videos which was what the majority wanted but since it's not exactly like the old way with the spontaneous and sometimes arbitrary jumpcuts and the music in the background he's just so boring and uninteresting. I still find Dan to be entertaining without these gimmicks. I look over at Neil's attempt to copy Dan's old style and laugh.
