@Badelves ..the dont rlly..if ur looking for a cheaper alternative to copics choose promarkers (they've got a bullet tip instead of a brush tho T-T) or Zig markers( they have a brush ) ^^
I enjoyed your informative video. I feel sad for those who have not learned what my mama taught me. If you don't have something positive to add, don't add anything. Thanks for sharing your wonderful cost saving ideas.
it's true that you don't need high quality markers such as copic or prismacolors to make an awesome picture. but the problem with using sharpies or other markers is that their colors can be limited. but either way it all comes down to the artist's skill in using any markers to their best.
ofcourse better products matter if you are a pro, however rubberstamping coloring isnt high art. The lady is doing fine with what shes working on and her voice is something she cant change so i suggest you check your own voice on tape. It might not be as pleasing as you think.
Alright, I recently started to use the Bic markers, and I start with the dark color first, and layer the lighter color on top. Even if you use rub/mark the lighter marker over the darker lines, it doesn't stick to the lighter tip. So your lighter tip will not change color or get ruined... unless you press too hard.
WTF ... of course, if you do such SIMPLE drawing like your exemple, you can use any markers. But when you made complex, big, detailed illustrations with characters, including face, expressions, landscape, scenery, Copics will make the difference.
So yes, when you're an artist, you can work with anything but still: if you have quality products, it really makes the difference
@Sonnenblume1996 Copics and/or prismacolours are better than bic/sharpie. It's not even a competition.
This woman, while talented, is doing a very simple, very small illustration. I garuntee, if you tried to do a huge, detailed ilustration, you wouldn't get the same result. Most people looking to buy copic markers are the people who have these kinds of detailed illustrations in mind.
Save up and buy a few copics, you'll be glad you did <3 :)
Awesome video. I'm not an artist!!! with that said why spend a $100.00 - $200.00 when, I can spend less than $20.00 and decide if its something I can or want to do. May God bless you & your family for sharing your knowledge/talent with me.
Great idea! Copic markers are very expensive & I personally don't think any marker is worth that kind of money--even on sale. So, thank you for sharing.
Great idea.I can't afford copic markers no matter how much I would try to save. Fixed low incomes don't allow for that kind of expense so, I really appreciate this video. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for showing us how to create beautiful-looking pictures on a limited budget. Your circle technique was new to me. And I liked the idea of 'grounding' the image. Thanks again. You made my day a bit more colorful! :0)
Wow, I've read some of the tempered responses, it's too bad that some people get offended with something like this, when they should be happy to find out that they don't have to buy the copics to get the same results.
I do have copics, but now, I will probably try some sharpies just to see how I like them. Thank you for sharing
I've been reading some of the comments on here, and as far as I went, there was a lot of "spoil brat" comments. Copics are super expensive, especially if you buy them in sets, but not all people who buy them are spoiled. I buy copics myself, but individually and not all at once. I might buy two (maybe 3 or 4 depending on coupons and sales) at a time, but that's maybe monthly or depends if I have extra cash to spare. But don't go thinking all copic users are "spoiled brats". I like this video.
Funny how all the people who bought the copic markers are all mad at us for using cheaper markers to get the same style of coloring ;) I would be mad if I spent $400 on 72 markers too! Use your copics then... why did you even watch this video? Hmm, must be something to this then if you want to see ;)
Thanks for sharing this. I was thinking of starting to colour in some of my images. I don't know if I will enjoy this or not, so this is perfect for me to try.
Wow I just read a few of the comments. Calm down people its just colouring.
I am so excited to see this video. Its awesome what you have done with affordable markers, and it shows me that I dont have to fork out hundreds of dollars for copics! Thank you so much!
This is very helpful to me. I wanted to try some techniques with blending markers but didn't want to fork out the money to pay for Copics for beginning. I'm glad you made this video. Thank you!
This is absolutely a good alternative to the pricey markers. Even if the cost is not a consideration it is nice to see artists use different methods. Personally, I would choose to spend the money saved on other materials or tools, that perhaps would not have anything you could substitute for. Thanks for sharing this technique. Kudos. Hugs, Suzy
Excellent video ... thanks so much for sharing this [I'm one of those who there is no way I could afford to buy the copic markers.] Thanks again so much! Debi
Excellent video ... thanks so much for sharing this [I'm one of those who there is no way I could afford to buy the copic markers.] Thanks again so much! Debi
I've seen ppl who do shit with copic markers, and create jaw droppers with stuff like bic or sharpies. Its not the tool, its the artist. Ask any art student
@insertcooluser That is true :3. I don't use copics i use crayola look at some of my drawings you can see that i don't use copics. But my drawing"s are just as beautiful as copics.
This is an excellent, and fairly advanced use of Sharpies! About the only question I have, is how do you blend Sharpie into the white of the paper? Find an empty pen and fill it with alcohol to use as a blender? Still, yeah, it's pretty hard to get soft neutrals or pastels with Sharpies without a lot of extra work. Then again, Copic pastels and neutrals are weak, WEAK ink, and you need to be careful with 'em or they just turn to mud or go unnoticed.
Thank you for this video! I am one who can not afford to buy a bunch of Copic or Prisma markers. I have a few Prisma markers to do skin and hair. But for everything else I use a variety of inexpensive markers. So your video is very helpful to me!
The only problem is that you can't make it lighter. Unless you use white-out, but it will be a sharp edge. I guess this is a good method for stamps though. But I need copics for comics. So I wouldn't risk doing this with my pictures.
But if you have a computer and printer I would go with the free art programs. Like SAI or something.
I'm not degrading this :\. It's good. I guess it depends what you're working with. (This case stamps)
This is a nice Vid to show people how to use other markers to do decent results if they cant yet aford it or dont have enough colors. HOWEVER anyone can do just acouple like colors and try making it look the same. Saying they can produce copic like results is a streatch of the truth. I have seen profesinals use both and it is a night and day diferance between the two. From color blending to streaking problems. Just Look up " copic marker tutorial " And see for yourselfs the true diferance.
This is a really helpful tutorial! Copic is a great brand, but I can't afford them since I'm just a high school student .... with no job. TT________TT
I'm considering some other marker brands that are a bit cheaper than Copics, like Prismacolor, Letraset, or Neopiko markers.
Thanks for the video. I think Copic's look better than Sharpie, but you can use Sharpie and save up to buy Copics one at a time. Great way to start for those who can't buy all the copics at once.
wow, I learned a lot by reading the comments too. I love this vid, esp cuz I've asked around and no one responded to me:( I think that for right now, I can afford the bic and sharpie, and start saving my nickles for my first set of copics...I like that they are high quality but for now, I'll use your vid for reference! Thanks everyone for being open....but ya didn't have to be rude about..it's just ink! "tomato" "tomatoe" ...but, whateva'! Thanks AHS!! Loved your vid!! gonna goto ur blog.. xoxo
I am neutral. I agree that copics are preety pricey, but it has good effects and could be refilled. As for sharpie, they do not have paint points. So i am preety neutral with both type of markers
Cost comparison between Copics and Sharpies should consider the fact that Sharpies are disposable while Copics are refillable. One Copic is more expensive than one Sharpie, but are 16 Sharpies still cheaper than a Copic Caio and a refill? Will you be coloring long enough to justify 16 markers? 31 markers? 146? Line width should be considered too. With one Copic, I can make lines as thick as a broad Sharpie, and finer than an ultrafine. This makes Copic the better deal for me.
@sdragon1984 If I had the money to buy a set of copics, yeah that would be the best thing. For now, I can only afford to SPLURGE on a big set of sharpies!
thanks so much for this video:) I just bought my sharpies pack this morning!
People! Just buy these markers called on the run. Theyre not as cheap as bics or sharpies, but theyre half the price of prismas and way less than copics. Great ink too :) just search them on google
i use copic and i love them. im not a marker snob. i just know what i like. i started using markers in the 1980's and so far copics are the closest i have found for what i want to accomplish.
you cant be an artist and complain about the price whether pro or for a hobby.
thats like saying im gonna buy a crappy paintbrush because a good brush is too expensive.
if you cant afford it, leave it at that. no need to bash copics to justify your actions.
@MrPhillyrick1 I can see what you're saying. I think it depends on how often you are going to use the markers. If you use them every day for every project, then in terms of pay per use, copics are the better buy.
If you are a crafter trying different effects, then this method may well suffice.
Thank You so much for sharing this information. I had got some Martha Stewart Markers for 19.00 and I have 36 colors. That is so much cheaper than copics. At first I was upset that I bought them but now I know what to do, Thanks to You. Oh and as far as the others not having soft colors, try Martha S. I will probably expand my colors now with sharpies. Thanks so much.
i love the arts and crafts, vibe with this it's very creative, though copics you can do a ton more than sharpies, (and i have many art markers) with your tutorial is really professional, especially the color testing page! I really enjoyed this, especially the creative way with the stamp!!
That is great! I would love to give it a try with sharpies. I also never wanted to buy the copics because they are too expencive. Thank you for showing us.
I have not let myself get interested in the Copics because of the steep price, but I would be willing to try your approach using the Sharpies. Sounds great! Thanks much
@ZScraper, I'm trying not to come off as a fanboy (girl) because I do have some bones to pick with copic markers.
Upsides: you can refill, and replace the marker, making it unnecessary to replace the marker when the nib breaks/wears down, or when it runs out of ink.
It blends wonderfully, if you use the right techniques (look up tutorials before you even begin using the markers, though).
There are many different shades of colours, making it easy to blend, and make things look natural (cont)
downsides: the price you already mentioned. They dry pretty fast if you have a fan running, making the colouring uneven, and awkward. Some of the colours don't look like the cap, making it necessary to test it on a seperate sheet of paper before using it. Are pretty permanent on other surfaces unless you use hand sanitizer to remove it. Most pens, if they are not gel pens, bleed severely with some colours, making it necessary to do weird things (ie copying) to use them.
@shadowstar2012 wellll you actually have to do tha with all markers like there not really anydownside to copics except the price which eve at 12 years old i ca buy them my self
@shadowstar2012 for your information i have eve with a god dam wfan on iots oly because you cqt really master tham so sdot be coming over here with all that attitude ya feel me
I am not an artist and even though I LOVE the look of copics, I just don't have the inclination to spend $400 on markers. I appreciate this as an alternative to forking over the cash.
another tip to get a lighter colors with Bic's or sharpies is to take off the tip and pour in a little rubbing alcohol to dilute the ink. great way revive your dead markers! :) Also try and "crushing the tips a little (But not too much) to make them softer and get better color lay-down! :) thanks for posting!
I think that is the point, to save money. That is nice that you don't complain about the cost, but some people can't afford to be 'better artists'. Your comment is pretty judgemental and not very considerate to the person who took the time to make this video for others who do care.
I own the bics, some sharpies, and some tria markers (similar to copics). I am not a marker snob.
The principal problem with bics or sharpies is that you do not have enough variations in similar colors and that the available colors tend to be a bit dark or heavy. If you were to augment your bics or sharpies with just a few lighter shades from the art-centric brands, you'll be able to do more things. This is especially true of the flesh tone colors, which are difficult.
is the base illustration basically a print? That's a good idea. Sometimes, (although not w/120lb paper), I scan and print the illustration then hit it with fix before coloring.
I just ordered copics, but it was because I love art and I want to find a easier way to break back into traditional (I'm a digital artist). But this is great for people who just need the copic effect a little bit--bit unfair to spend 400$ on a 72A set for three drawings! (:
Copic Markers are a very amazing art supply. However, for a package of 25 sharpies is around 18 dollars, whereas Copic Markers are quite expencive, around 6.50 $ each. Therefore, I think that it all depends on how much skill you have, and what kind of a technique you use.
This is a really nice tutorial for everyday scrappers and stampers. I don't know why this has created such controversy on copics vs. sharpies~this is just a budget-friendly alternative for non-professionals. Thanks so much for sharing!
Wonderful video, quite informative, I really enjoyed it. We, the few budget conscious people found it to be an excellent use of resources.. Seems like the "artists" forget that the best remembered artists were in the class of people who were poor. I am almost positive they could have appreciated your ingenuity.
Well...I suppose if I were attempting to earn a living with "art" I may spend every cent I had to purchase "the best". However, this is simply a hobby that I enjoy and my income is better spent on the things that I find to be more important. Try not to get so worked up over the little things in this life. Whether you choose to spend several hundred dollars or just a few dollars on markers, aren't we all just adding a little color in our world. Just enjoy your abilities!
Thanks for creating this video! I was so sad because I just found out how expensive copic markers are...i am just a beginner at this hobby and am excited that there is an alternative to buying the expensive markers...not everyone is a born artist that can afford $150 markers to start off...the people leaving the rude comments are simply ignorant!
call me ignorant if u want, but i least i am able to not only be a good artist, but one with quality supplies. if u get a good deal on the copic markers, they get to be $320 instead of $400 for the 72 color set. u should look at art stores in SF
Very well said oXprincessXo! Truth is some of the negative comments come from people not old enough to drive. So, i am sure they are not buying their own supplies!
no offense but you cant tell the difference between copics and *sharpies* is because ur very unpro. my mother entered rhode island art school at the age of 15 and has been a fashion designer since. she has tought me art since i was 3. and i have been using copics all my life. they are not pricey at all. if anyone is going to do art, it might as well be with the best tools and materials. not some cheap knockoffs
No offense, but one can buy a set of 36 bic markers for about 10 dollars, unlike copics which can cost anywhere from 3 to 6 dollars a pen.
The Bic Markers are a substitute for those who cannot afford copics but would like to try the same technique, for most rubber stampers they are a good alternative.
Not everyone has the ability or finances to buy the "best tools and materials," thus those of us on budgets make do with what we can.
@AfterHoursStamper I know these comments are really old lol, but I just saw 'em and had to comment too... I get angry at how people seem to think money grows on trees, or are disillusioned into thinking everyone has a lot of money. I'm not "poor", imo, and not on welfare, but I can't afford copics atm either. :/ Some kids are so spoiled. I wish everyone had to live on a tight budget for a while to set 'em straight.
Yes, I get angry too with these spoiled kids :\. They act so stupid using their money on the expensivest (and most of the time they don't need it). In the future they will have problems with their budget if they don't use these kind of tricks this person is showing us. Too bad I have to grow up with them =_=" Everyone is getting too materialistic not thinking before they buy.
(Haha. I'm a disciplined child, not a spoiled one.)
@MangaArtRay I agree! I really liked this video since it gives an alternative to Copics especially to practice shading and such. I have used Copics and obviously love them but they're pricey so can't have all the colours I'd like for them. Still it's a great tutorial and one that any beginner can use. Besides even if someone uses copics, if they can't draw it won't make a difference. But anyways wanted to say I agree!
"...because ur very unpro." ... No offense, but that doesn't sound very pro. And why are you looking at videos on youtube of this nature if you are a self-proclaimed pro at art and can afford the expensive supplies?
@proartsie13 well that's because you have money. And get your facts straight, Copic is SUPER pricey. Like, worse than prisma. I was looking at getting Copic, and a 32 set would put me back $100. markers, dude. If you strive to be a great artist, you don't need amazing materials. But keep in mind, she is putting A LOT of effort to get that geniune "copic look", your rist is gonna hurt dude haha :D But hey, if you're willing to suffer for your art, go for it.
@proartsie13 OMG, they are not pricey at all? I just SPLURGED 16 bucks on a big set of sharpies, there's no question about being able to buy more expensive markers now. I'm okay with that, I'm glad I wasn't raised a spoiled kid!
Thanks for this demo. I have just a few Copics, but tons of Sharpies! You've helped me see the possibilities using what I have. I appreciate it. :-) I plan to share your video with friends.
I have used color pencils and watercolors, but after seeing a few pieces of beautiful artwork, I wanted to try getting copic markers, but they were wayyyy too expensive. Thanks for this tutorial! When I get money I'm gonna go and by sharpies!!!
don't be an idiot! some people don't have the money to but copics. This is a very nice vid, economic but still looks high quality,so if you don't think so then keep your irritating comments to yourself!
Start with soft colours and gradually add darker colours?... Doesn't everyone colour that way already? *Confused* Markers, coloured pencils... even crayons... I don't know anyone who doesn't already use that 'technique'... But... thank you for sharing... I suppose.
@trishmeigs Because it's common sense. Like not running into oncoming traffic. Maybe I'm wrong though. Perhaps some people have trouble figuring these things out. *Shrug*
i dno woh you are nd wot your capable of but at the end of the day,,,stop being such a geek nd look at wot your drawin is it realy that good , people draw better things with pens from poundland ,,
Thank you for doing this video. I've tried the Copic markers and yes they are great, but for the use I would get out of them, the investment isn't worth it, but it is for the Sharpie/Bic. I'm excited to see how to use these to their fullest. I completely believe in using what you have to the fullest. Thank you again!!!
THANK YOU! I already gave in to the new beautiful Sharpies now available at Wal*Mart and need to justify the expense by USING what I have. This is GREAT. I'm excited!
QUESTION PLEASE: When you say you "emboss the edges with embossing powder". Is that heat embossing powder? So, do you go on and heat emboss as well first? I have an embossing gun if I need to do that...great idea. Just wondering. I'll have to visit your blog, too.

I have Copics from 2000 that work just fine. I can't say the same about Sharpies.
I air brush with Copics, I can't say the same about Sharpies. I don't get nauseous when I use Copcis, I can't say the same about Sharpies. I refill and replace my Copics, I can't say the same about Sharpies.
I can blend without streaking with Copics, I can't say the same about Sharpies.
I could go on, I'm running out of space
Professional artists use professional tools. Sharpies R great if U R writing on cardboard.
well, if your gonna make small pictures with two tones, you can use just about any marker... just not so much with more, illustration centered pictures.
Not everyone can afford the Copics (including me, I have a small assortment of them).
The point is that for those who can't afford the initial investment of the copics, the sharpies and the Bic markits are very good substitutes for rubber stampers.
Again, the initial cost of the copics is very high, and it takes a very large investment to get a good assortment of colors. For those of us on budgets, the sharpies and Bics are a good substitute.
I just went to the Office Depot website. I found a package of 12 colors of sharpies for 9.75 (assuming not tax and shipping) that is $0.82 cents per sharpie. A marker that will dry up, streak and not blend well etc. VS a one time cost of 3.75-5.75 (caio through sketch styles) and the 5 dollar cost of a refil; it works to about 1-1.10 USD per marker. So you are saving a whopping 20-30 cents for a product that sucks. that is unless you want to draw on cardboard boxes.
huh? 12 markers for roughly 10 dollars VS one marker for roughly 5 dollars.... wanna tell me what 5x12 is? To get 12 copics you're gonna be paying around 70 dollars! There are cheaper alternatives to Copics, but Sharpies and Bics are not them. Try Shin-han Touch, Prismacolor, Chartpaks, Design, or Tria Letraset Pantone.
Thanks for posting this. :-)

I didn't buy copics for the ink, i bought it for the great tip, which allows you to do amazingly good strokes, especially if you do hair.
Fine video though.

@Sierra0333

To act like all copic owners are some kind of junkies, stealing from the babies diaper money for the crack that is copics is just mind boggling!
And then on the opposite to say that if you have copics your rich and don't know the value of things and are spoiled is again unfounded.
I have a 36 set, I hold a low paying job and live and support myself, but I WORKED AND SAVED to get mine, FANCY THAT!
I budget, don't get into debt, dont have any other vices, pay my bills and save for my hobby

Tejina91 1 year ago 5
Funny how all the people who bought the copic markers are all mad at us for using cheaper markers to get the same style of coloring ;) I would be mad if I spent $400 on 72 markers too! Use your copics then... why did you even watch this video? Hmm, must be something to this then if you want to see ;)

This is absolutely a good alternative to the pricey markers. Even if the cost is not a consideration it is nice to see artists use different methods. Personally, I would choose to spend the money saved on other materials or tools, that perhaps would not have anything you could substitute for. Thanks for sharing this technique. Kudos. Hugs, Suzy

CeraFate 1 year ago
Copics suck, Sharpies suck. Get Prismacolor or Tria.
Fortist 1 year ago
Cost comparison between Copics and Sharpies should consider the fact that Sharpies are disposable while Copics are refillable. One Copic is more expensive than one Sharpie, but are 16 Sharpies still cheaper than a Copic Caio and a refill? Will you be coloring long enough to justify 16 markers? 31 markers? 146? Line width should be considered too. With one Copic, I can make lines as thick as a broad Sharpie, and finer than an ultrafine. This makes Copic the better deal for me.

i use copic and i love them. im not a marker snob. i just know what i like. i started using markers in the 1980's and so far copics are the closest i have found for what i want to accomplish.
you cant be an artist and complain about the price whether pro or for a hobby.
thats like saying im gonna buy a crappy paintbrush because a good brush is too expensive.
if you cant afford it, leave it at that. no need to bash copics to justify your actions.
MrPhillyrick1 1 year ago
any marker can lay down color. but you cant come close to getting the results of a copic when it comes to serious artwork.
this isnt a dis or anything. but on blends and textures, these wont come close. for laying down flat color, any marker will do.
MrPhillyrick1 1 year ago
@MrPhillyrick1 I can see what you're saying. I think it depends on how often you are going to use the markers. If you use them every day for every project, then in terms of pay per use, copics are the better buy.
If you are a crafter trying different effects, then this method may well suffice.
TheDarkplace 1 year ago
Thank You so much for sharing this information. I had got some Martha Stewart Markers for 19.00 and I have 36 colors. That is so much cheaper than copics. ZScraper 2 years ago
There are many different shades of colours, making it easy to blend, and make things look natural (cont)
shadowstar2012 1 year ago
@ZScraper, (cont)
downsides: the price you already mentioned. They dry pretty fast if you have a fan running, making the colouring uneven, and awkward. Some of the colours don't look like the cap, making it necessary to test it on a seperate sheet of paper before using it. Are pretty permanent on other surfaces unless you use hand sanitizer to remove it. Most pens, if they are not gel pens, bleed severely with some colours, making it necessary to do weird things (ie copying) to use them.
shadowstar2012 1 year ago
@shadowstar2012 wellll you actually have to do tha with all markers like there not really anydownside to copics except the price which eve at 12 years old i ca buy them my self

another tip to get a lighter colors with Bic's or sharpies is to take off the tip and pour in a little rubbing alcohol to dilute the ink. great way revive your dead markers! :) Also try and "crushing the tips a little (But not too much) to make them softer and get better color lay-down! :) thanks for posting!

yaiocrazy4love 2 years ago
I own the bics, some sharpies, and some tria markers (similar to copics). I am not a marker snob.
The principal problem with bics or sharpies is that you do not have enough variations in similar colors and that the available colors tend to be a bit dark or heavy. If you were to augment your bics or sharpies with just a few lighter shades from the art-centric brands, you'll be able to do more things. This is especially true of the flesh tone colors, which are difficult.

I just ordered copics, but it was because I love art and I want to find a easier way to break back into traditional (I'm a digital artist). But this is great for people who just need the copic effect a little bit--bit unfair to spend 400$ on a 72A set for three drawings! (:
Starrii 2 years ago
Copic Markers are a very amazing art supply. However, for a package of 25 sharpies is around 18 dollars, whereas Copic Markers are quite expencive, around 6.50 $ each. Therefore, I think that it all depends on how much skill you have, and what kind of a technique you use.

Well...I suppose if I were attempting to earn a living with "art" I may spend every cent I had to purchase "the best". However, this is simply a hobby that I enjoy and my income is better spent on the things that I find to be more important. Try not to get so worked up over the little things in this life. no offense but you cant tell the difference between copics and *sharpies* is because ur very unpro. my mother entered rhode island art school at the age of 15 and has been a fashion designer since. she has tought me art since i was 3. and i have been using copics all my life. they are not pricey at all. if anyone is going to do art, it might as well be with the best tools and materials. not some cheap knockoffs
proartsie13 2 years ago
No offense, but one can buy a set of 36 bic markers for about 10 dollars, unlike copics which can cost anywhere from 3 to 6 dollars a pen.
The Bic Markers are a substitute for those who cannot afford copics but would like to try the same technique, for most rubber stampers they are a good alternative.
Not everyone has the ability or finances to buy the "best tools and materials," thus those of us on budgets make do with what we can.

@AfterHoursStamper I know these comments are really old lol, but I just saw 'em and had to comment too...

But anyways wanted to say I agree!

lioncake 2 years ago 27
@proartsie13 well that's because you have money. And get your facts straight, Copic is SUPER pricey. Like, worse than prisma.

My philosophy is that an artist can use limited materials and make great work.
