It started in Call of Duty 2 but it kicks off at black ops and the reason why is because there is a girl called Samantha Maxis whos father was scientist, and basically the scientists who worked with him killed him blah blah Samantha somehow got into a scientists body because she wanted revenge and she controlled the zombies in zombie mode in black ops

The egg involved carrying one of those bears from mission start to mission end. it has been referenced in every infinity ward COD game since.
