it wasn't crashing. it wasn't free falling either. for it to free fall the engine would have had to been off. As you can see, the prop is turning. the pilot inside is doing a nose dive on purpose for the sake of the trick

He was freefalling. If the engine is killed the props do not just magically stop spinning. Also had the engine been engaged and he was nosediving the FREEFALLING skydivers would not have been able to catch up to the plane.
