sorry but just because steve jobs does not like it, does not mean he can impose a serious restriction on millions of websites, which rely on flash being able to be displayed. if the user wants they can always deinstall the flash plugin or install a flash to click component which lets you select which flash media to display.

I am sorry but I expected a market changer from this product. I feel it has not. Now I am not interested in all the technical stuff, I am an average guy who loves the idea of a pad that can take my emails, my internet, my music, my films in one not to small but not too big package. but if I am honest the UI and the whole not so (open internet) thing puts me off and the same for a lot of people I come across. shame, it had a lot more potential. I think I will buy the Adam tablet instead.

Wow, kind of harsh with all the hate, I too felt a little let down with the lack of Flash, but consider this... if you've ever owned an iphone or MacBook Pro, Apple is just brilliant at making beautiful machines with elegant UI. The problem with Flash is really about control. Most of the web viruses nowadays are introduced through Flash applets. Also, the latest security update for MacOS X fixed 12 vulnerabilities, 7 of them in Flash. With the app store Apple has better control over what the apps can and cannot do. There is also the fact that Flash applets tend to be extremely inefficient. That is unimportant for today's PCs, but on mobile platforms it is an issue because it has a significant effect on battery life.

Officially, no you can't. In reality, there are Linux distributions that you can dual boot with the iPhone OS (and thus it is almost certain they will get ported to the iPad). Also, if you jailbreak your iPhone, you can use Android-like skins and the counterparts of Android apps (with interface and all).

If you are saying that because YouTube uses Flash... well, there has been a YouTube app included with the iPhone (and thus the iPad) since it was introduced. You can watch this video there. Also, even in Safari you will be redirected to an iPhone-optimized version of YouTube (no need for the app now). Furthermore, YouTube is testing an HTML5 version of the site that works great (see youtube . com/html5), perhaps they will phase out Flash eventually.

BTW, if you use apps such as Skype you will be able to make phone calls (the iPad will have a microphone). And also, if you have 10 hours a day to spend with a primarily leisure device such as the iPad, I want your job. ;-)

1) It's the main vector for web viruses. In fact, the last security update for Mac OS X fixed 12 vulnerabilities, of which 7 were in Flash. 2) It is extremely inefficient in the sense that it takes FAR more CPU power to run compared to doing the same task with other technologies (e.g., playing a video in HTML5). That is a huge deal for mobile computers as it impacts battery life drastically. For other reasons, check the "Criticism" section in the Adobe Flash entry in Wikipedia.

The MacBook Air is designed for the future. It is probably safe to say that a MacBook and MacBook Pro are better investments today. As more gadgets go wireless, as the price continues to drop, as hard drive size continues to increase you can just download more movies rather then rely on DVDs, the more sense it makes. The websites look exactly like in this video, except for the Flash content which appears as white boxes with a "missing plugin" icon. This promotional video was probably filmed using an internal version of Safari, with Flash support so that it looks better (so you are right in that it's deceiving).
