  • i cant listen to this drivle

  • i can't believe there are people comparing these 2 ,they are so different as guitarists, john has to be appreciated for his song writing ,his amazing chord structure and he's inovative melodic bluesy soloing ,but stevie just had a natural ability and the blues running through his fingertips , he played so raw but so refined at the same time,,,don't compare them at all just remember they have both been influential in there own right

  • man, John Mayer is such a bullshitter

  • @CthulhuSkunk the dude has an SRV tattoo... i highly doubt anything he says about his idol is bullshit

  • Mayer is a great player and he rightfully and humbly plays tribute to probably the second greatest guitarist who ever lived: SRV.

  • Wtf is up with you people. I've learned a bunch of SRV songs note for note,... and JM is spot on, humble, and insightful in this interview. He's a bad ass blues guitarist in his own right. Listen to and learn some songs from Mayer's live stuff then get back to me.

  • John Mayer says some ppl can play with the same intensity of Stevei Ray Vaughan for about 20 seconds. BITCH PLEASE. HE can't play for one second like SRV. There are gods.... then there are just little peons.

  • @ThyChrysanthemum I think anybody who has played blues for at least two years can muster about 3 seconds worth. Search up stevie snacks, it is this guy who gives lessons and he can play just about every stevie ray lick note for note. Check it out it is pretty cool.

  • @tmoench1116 dude I'm jus hatin on john. And I know ppl can get down a dudes licks and chops down with enough practice. I jus still hate on whenever john Mayer ever mentions himself in any way, shape, or form with SRV.

and johns a skillful musician too, don't get me wrong. But its the idea that he'd ever be marketed as any sort of parallel in league with hendrix and SRV that sends me to HATER mode.

  • @ThyChrysanthemum John is definitely one of the best guitar players ever.

  • @Ragz25T Your opinion, man. I think a lot of people can play just as well as John and he never stood out to me as anything extraordinary.

  • @tmoench1116 dude, after two years of playing guitar you can't do shit.. you don't know what you are talking about

  • @shortwatchtower I knew how to play texas flood after two years so maybe I do know what I am talking about.

  • @tmoench1116 yeah but maybe it sounds like shit, and maybe you are one of those bedroom guitarist who think they are the best but actually are not... not saying you are but maybe you are because there are alot of people who are saying they are good but actualy play like shit

  • God this fucker loves to talk.

  • This is like listening to Kenny G. talk about Charlie Parker...

  • I saw a vid of mayer getting schooled by BB king that was pretty cool...

  • i like JM playing, especially when he plays in his 3 piece blues band. I really don't care for his pop music. He's seems kinda wierd though

  • I don't know what it is about this guy, but just something about his music just makes me want to stay away from being influenced by greats like srv and hendrix.. his playing just doesn't sound honest or original. he plays songs made my honest and inspiring musicians, but then goes to make his own songs and they just sound like mainstream shit. music is expressing the pain suffering of life in a beautiful way. It allows you to escape from this hell. I doubt mayer could ever understand that.

  • @kermicheo Everybody gets influenced. Nobody's style comes out of the blue. Who'd be your choice if you reject SRV and Hendrix?

  • @5507156693 all I'm trying to say is that I think mayer is a complete sellout

  • @kermicheo Who isn't in this day and age? At least he can play

  • He said he could play like stevie for 20 seconds. Wait... Im done laughing. What a fag.

  • @wmc1103 well he only said with the same intensity so i don't think he was saying he could play as good as srv just the same attitude towards the guitar

  • @guitarnutter32 i think thats what he meant as well. Maybe jon should look up the word "intensity".

  • Mayer is a fine guitar player but there is more to a unique guitarist than just pulling strings and hitting notes. As an alleged "Blues" player he lacks in authenticity. He’s also deficient in the "magic to the point of hypnotic", to quote a UK journalist, that Stevie had in spades. Mayer too much smells of show biz. So, instead of failed comparisons to SRV, judge him by his own merits. He's good. Playing with Herbie Hancock is a good attestation

  • @Jesrama1 Wow! Well said, brother. Kudos.

  • ...seriously! yes - the triple threat. - that is the holy grail of guitar playing and singing / song writing - to be a good or even amazing player is not enough. To be an amazing singer and songwriter can get you far...if you've got an amazing guitarist to back you up...but to be able to write songs like SRV with that much rhythm, intensity, and soul - and play hard and heavy with perfect execution...is an unstoppable force.

  • john looks and sounds so much younger here.

  • He's really pale… almost vampire-like.

  • what's the name of the song at the very beginning of this video, I know it but can't get the name in my head.

  • @MrTurpinhill hideaway

  • @theruns123 yes!!! , it was one of those times when you can almost think of it but not quite.

    Thanks...

  • and btw RIP SRV. 21 years ago from today.

  • i throughly enjoyed listening to Mayer's comment on SRV. But i hated scrolling down and seeing a bunch of fucks who thinks they are better than everyone and try to argue over something that no one's ever going to care about. WHY CANT YOU ALL JUST SHUT THE FUCK UP AND APPRECIATE JUST A BIT OF THIS?

  • i never used to like john mayer. i always thought he was just some pop artist. then about 2 years ago i heard him play blues and some hendrix covers and ive been a fan ever since.

  • @RandyBarrick He's definately a blues guy. Pop just pays the bills

  • john mayer is the complete oppostie of s.r.v. stevie was raw, uncut, work hard to be a blues player. john is a pretty boy pop star and only plays blues because he wants to ride the coattails of s.r.v.

  • @TheGent85 JM started playing in blues clubs at the age of 14 so I'm pretty sure he's not jumping on to this S.R.V. blues band wagon. He made 2 pop albums so that he could have the opportunity of playing what he wants for the fans and to bring blues into mainstream.

  • @stayclassy92 i rember john mayer when he was in clubs doing his solo stuff, and i don't rember him playing blues. as a blues player my self, i doubt i would perform pop just to play blues later in life... to me that doesnot make sense plus that doesn't fly in chicago. we take are blues pretty serious here. plus your talking about john mayer bringing blues to the mainstream... does blues really need to be taken to the mainstream to truly be appreciated? i don't think so.

  • @TheGent85 "Pop" is no dirty word. It just means popular. Jimi Hendrix's and SRV's music, though more "purely" connected to rock/blues was actually pop at the time. Making pop music isn't wrong; when you try to make a living as a singer/songwriter or musician in general your goal isn't to impress with guitar licks: it's to get as much people as possible to hear you out and that's what JM did. And if you play guitar, you'll see that NONE of his "pop" songs are in any way simple.

  • @TheGent85 If it weren't for his "pop" music I would've never even heard about the blues. As soon as I heard "Belief" I took guitar playing seriously and fell in love with blues guitar. Remember pop only means popular, and although most pop music nowadays is musically empty, this guy's is very blues influenced and complex in terms of chord structure.

  • Wow.No one has described the Fender master,SRV better than Mayer just did.I have a lot of respect for John Mayer now.And i just listened to his cover of Little Wing.He has shades of Stevie Ray.Very smart and very talented.I am now a fan.

  • Double Trouble broke...reather changed or modified..... the rules - that's why JM idolized their music - and SRV's. JM will mature - he's done great things for a young guy. He can light it up, guys - give him 5 years and it'll be incredible. Can you imagine SRV with another 10 years? Mindboggling......what is it with 27 year old musicians?

  • @TheTruthseeker711 You are confusing something. SRV was 35 when he died. Hendrix died at 27.

  • "but you can only do it for 20 seconds: and then your arm cramps up."

  • This was a very cerebral and profound breakdown of Stevie Ray Vaughn. If you have to do it verbally, you almost have to do it this way. Afterwards you hope the people you're talking to don't stumble into the comparison discussion. The guy just spoke the truth. Period.

  • JM nailed it.

  • Absolutely...he is a amazing guitarist. I believe strongly that you do not have to know how to play or read music to see the talent that he has. I would think that the percentage of people that listen to Hendrix Stevie and such don't play either....but talent like his is history in the making and I'm so blessed to have gotten to see JM live to truly appreciate.

  • Is he really comparing himself to Stevie? He said he could play with SRV's intensity for 30 seconds. Let's see. If a concert was 2 hours it would make SRV 240 times better. lol. John is being humble and respectful. Half of ya'll arguing don't even know their music like that. Shut up

  • JM is simply the most talented musician of his generation. Sure he made some questionable-I'm awkward and still growing up-comments and silly pop music like body is a wonderland and daughters that just make me cringe. But his love has always been blues, you can see if when he plays. Slow Dancing, gravity, need no doctor, vultures, everyday I have the blues, in your atmosphere, somethings missing, etc, etc are F!@#ing epic tunes. And he's only like 32!! So go on, hate and be jealous u losers.

  • The Best

  • You guys are so dimwitted I almost want to print out your comments just so I can throw them in my shredder.

  • I swear to god that boy is boarder line retarded.

  • Why is this guy talking about talented guiarists? He sucks ass at singing and guitar playing, and I've heard he is a douche in real life. ...and LOL, he just claimed he could play like SRV. What a tool.

  • Ah, of course, another hater on YouTube who goes around criticising musicians that they don't like. Let's all see how good you are at playing guitar and singing, OH WAIT. YOU DON'T HAVE ANY VIDEOS. Prove you're better than John Mayer and then maybe we'll take you seriously :D

  • @1cazcazcaz So you hate on them? Shouldn't you have to prove you're as good as John Mayer to say they aren't as good as him? Stupid hypocrite. Mayer sucks, and anyone who can play even half-assed knows that.

  • @Sunderlanding

Oh yeah, I am a stupid hypocrite. Whoops.

  • @1cazcazcaz Glad you can finally admit that.

  • @bella112118

    Smh…

If you had actually ever listened to John, I maybe in a strange universe in a different dimension i would've taken you seriously…

    But you havent so…

  • @twelge15 he has a new drummer already, Aaron Sterling.. And btw personally didnt like Carlock's drum skills, i like steve jordan more, his sound, his feel dangit that man was great

  • John Mayer made a good call with bringing Keith Carlock into his band last year as the new drummer! I wonder if John has been to the 55bar in NYC and digs what Keith's done with Wayne Krantz or if he digs Wayne's playing.

  • where is the clip of him talking about another great pop song artist? wouldnt that be more suitable for him?

  • Slowhand JR. Talking about SRV, best thing ever

  • @Takistater He's giving him praise. If you'd look past the face and listen to what he's saying I think you'd understand that.

  • it's like a great basketball or football player saying for one game he played at the level of an all-time great, but he doesn't play at that level all the time.

  • i think Mayer gets a lot of flack because he's not only set foot into the "pop" realm, but he's succeeded, unlike a lot of other great guitarists who are only well-known within guitar-based circles. Eric Clapton is the same. while Joe Bonamassa and Joe Satriani are amazing, outside of rock circles, who really knows them?

also, Mayer isn't saying he plays like Stevie. he says he has his rare moments when he can maybe get up there for a second, but then he can't sustain it. which is very humble.

  • @makeitrain47 Yep. Many people don't like the pop - blues (rock) hybrids. Because blues and rock, unlike pop, are neither meant as some bubble gum that you chew up when bored nor as a background for some other more attention consuming activity. Clapton lost lots of his true fans when he turned to pop. Well, he might have won others plus tons of bucks, but still...

  • John, SHUT THE FUCK UP! Stop sucking Jennifer Aniston's dick and learn how to play and sing! Who the fuck are you to be giving advice or be talking about Stevie Ray Vaughan when you didn't even know him. Grow up little boy, and pick a genre of music! You pop star queer. Put your tongue back in your mouth. Put down the bag of cocks. You're mom's a whore.

  • @Bella112188 this insult is so ignorant. why are you watching his video if you have nothing nice to say?

  • @soccerstar4985 And if it is ignorant and you are so offended (why because they aren't together anymore?) then maybe you should stop obsessing about gossip shows and reading tabloid rags and get a life. I think John Mayer has talent, but he's not a man by any means. He doesn't have enough guts, like Stevie, to just play the music he loves, instead he plays the music that gets him fame because of morons like you who listen to him. go fuck yourself.

  • @Bella112188 Well, we all have our opinions, some stronger than others, have a nice day maybe you should try smiling once in a while

  • @Bella112188 What? Yes, he played some cheesy pop songs to get discovered, but have you ever actually heard Mayer play? The man has chops that the likes of you will never have.

  • @Bella112188 seriously, you got some issues. why even comment?

  • @makeitrain47 and @soccerstar4985

Fuck You. And I thought it was funny! If you took a second to realise how fucking shitty these musicians are and how much of a disgrace they are to the music world, and realise that true musicians like SRV and Eric Clapton get overshadowed by all this bullshit that society says is good music and it all happens because of idiots like yourself. I comment the truth though it may be crude because I can. So again FUCK OFF! You're mother's a whore!

  • @Bella112188 are u 2? lol

  • @Bella112188 thank you so much.

  • Respond to this video... thank you so much.

  • if only john didnt talk...

  • JM is such a douche. Talking about how he can play like Stevie, How to play like Stevie, it's idiotic! No one can play like Stevie, and I mean NO ONE!! Sure, he's a good guitarist, but telling someone the exact style SRV plays is stupid! Just because your a guitarist that bendsa lot of notes doesn't mean your Stevie Ray Vaughan! You can thumb me down but I will still stand my ground, no one should sit there and tell you how to play like Stevie, when he isn't Stevie!

  • @danthatcan2 He's not talking about playing like stevie, he's talking about playing as hard as stevie did. He even said, "...certain culminating energy in the room, you can play with the same intensity, but you can only do it for about 20 seconds."

  • @milodaman2 but he's still talkng about playing like Vaughan. You can't tell someone how to play as intense as Stevie. Which he's doing.

  • @danthatcan2 You are exactly right! Though you said it in a much nicer way. Which I would agree is the proper way to do it, it's difficult sometimes when all you see or hear are these type of things from musicians who speak as if they know about someone that they never even met. I don't like the fact that John Mayer is irresponsible in his statements and misleading. To speak as if you are the person. I don't know who's worse, John Mayer or the people who believe what he says/ listen to him.

  • @Bella112188 Haha. Someone whom supports me. Haha

I could've put it in words where youtube would think that I'm fucked up enough to ban my file. But I have uploaded videos... Don't wanna get banned. haha

  • Some years back I saw a biography of Eric Clapton and how he grew up and evolved into a really good guitar player and even in his era, as Clapton was familiar to people back then, the narrator of Claptons biography said he got put down or was criticized as a musician. Same thing is happening to John Mayer. These guitarists are filling arenas and events everywhere. Mayer is getting criticized or inevitably compared to others. Same thing happened to other talents. JM is a talented musician.

  • JM ,dude, you're a very talented guitarrist with a blues potencial that no one has (nowadays). so WHY DO YOU KEEP MAKING BUTTHURT SONGS ???

    thats my question.

  • SRV also use to say he had bad nights, JM is portraying the exact thing SRV said ISN'T true..

  • Mayer is one hell of a guitar player, period.

  • John Mayer is so underrated, I think it's about time us guitarists give him the respect he deserves

  • John Mayer you have never played with the intensity or soul of SRV note even 30 seconds fuck not even one note.

  • @pyaco039 i bet you can't play most John Mayer songs!!!! so shhhhh

  • @pyaco039 I know that seriously pissed me off so much, I lost ALL what little tiny bits of respect I might have had for him as a guitar player until I heard him say that. All these people hear him play SRV covers and are like OMG HES SO GOOD. It's like .. no you can't fucking compare yourself or anyone to SRV you dumbfuck.. He could've been like yea hes a big influence and left it at that.. but he had to throw that little bit in there. What a scrub..

  • @freaknbigpanda Right on my man! Basically you said what I was trying to say without all of the fuck yous. So thank you!

  • @Bella112188 You have serious issues haha

  • why does every musician have to talk like a sanctimonious, arty farty, look how deeply I know and understand the music, WANKER! I'm pretty sure stevie just played cos it was fun! this bloke wants to turn it into a thesis.

  • Comment removed

  • Mayer is a dickhead

  • his talking voice doesnt match his singing voice very well, not what i expected. i still like him though

  • @boboclyderrealboyz his talkin voice is way better

  • @Jessrama Well the answer to that is that every cover isn't a tribute. Jimi always put his own touches on a song, SRV played in Germany and he played Little Wing then some Third Stone from the Sun. YT is endless enjoyment and whats funny is that we both agree that SRV didn't copy hendrix but we still found an arguement out of this. Every time I reply I am either listening to SRV or Jimi lol.

  • That would be why John Mayer is one of my top favorite musicians, he appreciates one of the most iconic guitarists ever. Gracias. :)

  • John, you couldn't have said it better.

  • @Jessrama Sorry mr troll, I forgot the a in his name, and no I doubt that it is clueless, he does sets of songs because he wants Jimi's music to live on which is essentially a tribute, and if you disagree you don't know the connection between them. When Jimmie VAUGHAN plays for Stevie he plays a tribute, same goes for Stevie and Jimi

  • musician wars are funny.

  • ..thats what im saying SRV is a reference..

  • @Jessrama yeah i'd say his songs like couldn't stand the weather, and testify were what got him famous. luckily when my dad was in college he got srv to come play at George Mason when srv was just getting started. he never shuts up about stevie, seeing the videos of him playing i can't blame him.

  • Even though i wasn't alive yet, the day John Mayer listened to an SRV record was the best day i never lived.

  • I looked down at my clock and it was 19:54

i was like "hehehhehehhe SRV is born again!"

RIP bro we miss u everyday

  • John Mayer is not the greatest guitarist (not nearly as great as Hendrix or SRV) and he would be the first to tell you, however give the man some credit...In a world where artists have no talent, digitize their voices, and just play and yell as loud as they can, here is a guy who is old school and tries to carry the legacy of Hendrix and SRV on his back. Props to you John Mayer.

  • @ZeppelinFan6980 He seems friendly and smart but i really don't like any songs he has written and i really don't like listening to him sing. He is a good guitarist but so are a million other guys, i'd rather he sucked at guitar but wrote amazing songs and sang wonderfully but that is just my opinion. He has his fans and had made his money, the guy is doing something right. I don't like his new singles and i didn't like the album Continuum and i don't like the Trio either, John doesn't care.

  • Yes it has been done before! When you hear greats like Clapton talk about the "foundation" and "base" of their music, it goes back to the blues, so imitation is the biggest form of flattery in addition to being a testament to where the roots of your own music lie. John Mayer did it right, and now each of us can form our own opinion of who is the "best"

  • ok douches a blues progression is a blues progression. its all already been done before

  • Why does everybody argue about these three guys? Hendrix, SRV, and Mayer (even though mayer is usually excluded, leaving Hendrix and SRV) Still, my point is that if we are arguing about them, than they are great. We wouldn't be arguing so intensley if one of these guys was a bum, because none of them were.

  • @ZeppelinFan6980

case and point: justin beiber, we argue about him, and he is worthy of as much discussion as a pencil.

  • @ZeppelinFan6980 I don't see the point of the argument, all 3 guys are in different genres and from different eras. Hendrix was SRV's biggest influences if you weren't aware so its safe to say that were it not for Hendrix you would have never heard of SRV, you can take from there and say that since SRV is apparently Mayer's biggest influence then Hendrix basically paved the way almost 20 years before SRV and a solid 40 years before Mayer. Clearly Hendrix was the most original and influential.

  • @JamesNiskyMusic I know I completely agree with you. And whats funny is a lot of people hating have videos where they cover SRV or Hendrix on their page. They talk about how Mayer is a rip off but most of them do the exact same thing and copy SRV's riffs, not that Mayer is a copycat at all, he is actually quite original in his covers, I would know, I've seen him live.

  • @Tarwater03

Stevie went down in history mostly for his genuine, passionate playing and the way he conveyed emotions right in the hearts of the audiences making them connect with the music. Skilled and innovative guitar players we have had in truckloads but very few of them radiated magic like SRV. That’s where he stood out. And if you don't have this from God no amounts of muscles, thick strings and rewound pickups would help

  • sim mas o que ele disse o que ele disse o que ele disse ???

  • Boxingin is a dumbass..

  • I love you stevie with all my heart and soul :)

  • SRV was more southern blues,Hendrix had a very nice funky rhythm and style.

I think SRV had his own sound definitely, they don't sound similar at all.

Hendrix was more rhythmic,SRV focused always on the Blues.

  • I don't understand half of his words, can someone write it Please???

  • WOW you honestly think that Jimi Hendrix was inspired by MILES DAVIS....really people you must be crazy...... but anyways who are you to say who is innfluenced by who...I hate youtube for that fact... they should censor out all the immature retards who lack common sense and musical knowledge. Now dont get me wrong John Mayer does have some songs out that arent so great but who doesnt.... but what you dont see on his albums is what he plays live....

  • Comment removed

  • @boxingin SRV didn't have his own sound ..... Are you High???? The guy had a raw and gritty tone that when hearing it you knew exactly who it was and his use of the Leslie speaker was a total signature sound.Every blues guitarist that has come along since has been compared to him for a reason Just Like Stevie was compared to Hendrix.Hendrix was much more spiritual and psychedelic with his playing

  • @boxingin not a copy cat ass hole , influenced.big difference.no one plays original music realy.you learn from the greats before you.and then put your spin on what they did to make it your own.its a continuios cycle of polishing the product, in this case the blues .i bet you dont even play an instrument , if you do who were you influenced by ? and if so i guess you are a copy cat .i am a militant musician against ignorant statements from people like you who just dont get it .

  • @klbax63

To compare Stevie and Hendrix is utter idiocy. To say Hendrix was "more spiritual", too

  • Stevie Ray is my God. John Mayer is a sucker

  • @billyhotrod7 You're beeing mean to him, his not that bad as you say. I thinks he's pretty good.

  • I had the privledge to see SRV twice. Once in a gym at Butte College. The crowd was 500 people. Unbelievable. Second time Jeff Beck opened. No lie

  • ur an idiot. burn in hell

  • mayer is a great guitarist. clapton invites him to the crossroads guitar festival every single year to perform with other blues legends. why? because he can really play the blues. mayer should not be hated on so much because he made a few pop albums. another thing, mayer should not be compared to stevie because he is not trying to be stevie. he grew up listening and playing SRV songs because thats what he liked. everyone just chill out and like what you want to like.

  • @Jessrama . Stevie Ray Vaughan did not copy Jimi Hendrix, he to it to the next level, if you had Jimi and Stevie go head to head Stevie would win. Jimi is the creator and Stevie is the perfector.

  • 1:12

  • Funny i'm not into this guy Mayer, but his thoughts and perspective really surprised me. HE GETS IT!! SRV to me is the dick butkus of blues guitar. He gave it his all every time he hit the stage, and then some! He was a Beast! Having played old traditional blues, west coast jump and swing, and rock blues, with a mix of jazz; i've always heard many influences of guitar players in SRV. what made him unique was his tone, attack, and phrasing. It really was different back in 82/83 when he came out.

  • @fjaviersaiz Maybe mainstream guitarist buddy, but EVH didnt have the FEEL that SRV and Hendrix did. I love EVH, but you could feel SRV playing guitar, not just here it....EVH and all his tapping and shred licks are cool, I do them sometimes, but they have no substance. Those tricks were just new and unheard of at the time, which is why they are so famous now. SRV played with soul, which is the reason that music inspires people. EVH played with technique and innovation, which doesnt inspire...

  • @dmb3305 Great comment, man; thanks

  • @dmb3305

you cannot say eddie didnt have the "feel" that srv and hendrix did. i dont know if you play guitar, but when i do i get a feeling nothing else has ever given me. thats only after playing a few years(i play blues, but also pretty much every genre to expand my musical knowledge). You cannot say Eddie did not have as much feel... first, you have no way to prove that. Also, evh DOES inspire people. He does play blues too, and has feeling in his solos even without the fancy technique.

  • @dmb3305 well said
