Terry Jones is a dick. However he's right. Jones is essentially saying "these people are so insane that when I burn a book they will kill people" and he was right.
He's a dick, an inflamatory dick. But one who is right,
@sincristo: Actually their time could not be better spent. Memorizing is the first stage; thereafter, understanding, practicing and teaching should follow. These people are studying something that, in language terms, is a an absolute masterpiece (no human has ever been able to improve on the verses of the Quran, which points to its Divine origin); something that is and will continue to be relevant to all human beings of all backgrounds and from every part of the world.
@SolidState92 "no human has ever been able to improve on the verses of the Quran, which points to its Divine origin"
That's incredibly subjective. I think everybody can probably point to something of "divine" origin, including my girlfriend's mixed-berry pie.
The Koran is just as full of contradictions and absurdities as the Bible. That alone diminishes its "masterpiece" status, and shows it was written by men.
Language-wise, of course, I cannot comment since I cannot speak or read Arabic.
@sincristo HAHAHAHAA-but seriously your final statement destroys your whole arguement as this is precisely one aspect including its derivatives (language, construct, form meanings etc.), which elevates the Quran as a Divine Book and as a masterpiece. Look do some serious reasearch on my claims, or do you want me to post links for you (can't be bothered) or do you want me to break it down for you (more can't be bothered)? I heard your girlfriends pie IS divine, as it gets passed around a lot.0 ;)
The Koran is just like the Bible, it's just a book.
If you went into a second hand book store and found a book called 'The Bible' or 'The Koran' or 'Carlos Castaneda The Teachings of Don Juan' and decided to live your life by it, then so be it, it's your choice...
It doesn't make it fact to everyone, but let people believe in what they believe in and get on with their lives.
By the way, Millions across the Planet memorised the entire Quran since the time of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) until now. A practice not observed by any other religion in the World. So even if one was to burn every single copy, it can be re-written within minutes from human memory.
@sincristo they are called Hafiz Ul-Qu'ran ----> persons who memorize the Qu'ran it has been a tradition for 1400 years ever since the Qu'ran was first preeched .. believe it or not but the most of the hafize's are children .. type in youtube " hafize " or " child memorizes Qu'ran " it is really inspiring .. (anyway i told you this message in response to AbyAmanah's comment to you in case you didnt believe him ;-) )
@TurkishMujahid That's actually very interesting, thanks for the info.
I have no trouble believing that people are motivated to memorize holy text. I think their time would be better spent memorizing Shakespeare or Omar Khayyam, but that's just a personal preference.
@sincristo hahaha i am sorry but i don't think personally shakespare or omar khayyam comes anywhere close to Qu'ran :-) but hey every man decides for himself right :-) ps : i don't know why omar khayyam is sorry :D !!
@AbuAmanah What do you mean, not practiced by any other religion in the world? Do you know anything about other religions at all? Jewish people and Hindu people also memorize their texts, and that's only drawing from my limited knowledge of world religion. Don't be so conceited. I respect you and your religion, but don't act superior when you don't have your facts right.
@OhMySavy Actually, relatively speaking it is not practised on a MASS scale in other religions. When you consider the scope of memorisation that takes place around the world and the fact that the whole Book (from cover to cover) is recited from memory daily and especially during the month of Ramadan... then I say GET YOUR FACTS STR8 MA8! Lol, kidding :)
I don't find people's holy books particularly sacred, but they are special to the people who have that belief. Let's be honest, is there any point at all in doing hateful things? Does it help the world? If you have a Koran at home and don't want it, burn it. But public displays like the one that was planned, are. . .well. . .inflammatory. I think the Koran & Bible are foolish tales that offer more evil than good, but the outcome of provocation can only be violence, more enmity, and distrust.
@laraesque I agree with you for the most part, but I do hold to my earlier point that there might be a gradual benefit to acts like this if they help introduce the Muslim world to a modernity where insulting a religion...even theirs... is permissible even if it is self-evidently distasteful.
How would modern Christians react to a guy conducting a public Bible-burning? Most of them would shrug and say "what a dick", then go about their day.
Such would not have been the case a few centuries ago.
@sincristo I don't think you have to go back a few centuries. Just like the extremist sects of Islam, the extremists (read evangelicals) would do so much more than shrug. These are the people who were burning Beatles albums when I was a youngster because John Lennon, a young whippersnapper himself then, said that The Beatles were more popular than Jesus. These same who scream at people in Pride Parades, bomb abortion clinids, & protest funerals of gay servicemen. The whackos are still there.
@laraesque Ha... too true. The difference between Christians a few centuries ago and now (and between, say, American Muslims and those in Tehran) is the degree of power they have to make their religious views compulsory.
Morons, they are all morons. Burning the Koran is moronic and not wanting it to be burned is moronic. Wish they all would have soaked in kerosene and lit themselves on fire.
@Otokogoroshi Just because you have the right to do something doesn't mean you *should* do it. I mean it's not like burning Korans is fun or anything, it's something done for the specific reason to upset people.
@PurrfectPeach I agree that a bunch of Christians getting together and burning the Koran is a bad idea. However it is their right. My issue on this matter is that the same Muslims who are bitching and crying about it are often the exact same people who burn the American flag or burn images of our president in effigy.
@Otokogoroshi It's not just a book... it's a magic book, full of fabulous tales and valuable moral maxims like "wage war against such of the infidels as are your neighbors".
Come to think of it, burning may be too good for this particular "book".
@Otokogoroshi I agree with you that it is and should be the right of Americans to do this. And I also agree that people who desecrate things sacred to others should not complain when people desecrate what is sacred to them.
@PurrfectPeach I have no problem with burning the Koran as a free speech issue i think it's probably a good thing... just like "Everybody Draw Mohammad" day was a good thing... because such acts will provide a gradual and much-needed perspective to Muslims who have never been exposed to good old fashioned blasphemy before.
But I do think it's a bad idea for this Christian pastor to make a public spectacle out of burning the Koran. It's playing right into Islamic extremists' hands.
@sincristo Yes, I think it's fanning a flame that's already raging out of control. I agree absolutely that it is and should be our right to do this, but it's a lousy idea. I am inclined to disagree that this is necessarily teaching Muslims anything we want them to learn, but it's an interesting perspective =)

These people are idiots. If someone wants to burn a Koran or Lolita or the Bible or anything that they personally own it is their right.
The over-reaction of the religious and those overly sensitive to religion puzzles me. The law doesn't say you're not allowed to be a dick :P
Otokogoroshi 1 year ago
@Otokogoroshi "The law doesn't say you're not allowed to be a dick" True! As opposed to Sharia law, which says you're not allowed NOT to be a dick.
All religions lead to some form of stupidity, but some are worse than others-- I mean, you don't see Hindus rioting every time I burn a hamburger.
