I'm reading Experience and he has become my hero. I also saw Philip Larkin at Hull in 1982-'85 and he completely ignored me! Can I be an intellectual now?
Mart's sense of loss at death of Kingsley and Sally is real and beautifully evoked in his writing. Problem is, his insensitive dramatising of his cousin's murder and his using of her death in his memoir, offended her family (as he says of the guy who wrote about his father's death-bed scene "What was he doing in there?") Also his too personal descriptions of his own father's death, make us suspect his motives. Is nothing sacred to this guy? He does not forgive others for this ambulance-chasing.
he's not a pseudo-intellectual, he's an intellectual. by what other term could he be described? he earns his bread and butter by his intellect. it's his job. what in the world could it mean to call martin amis a pseudo-intellectual?

This is the problem, guys like this. Can you imagine him as a kid, making his own soap-box cart? I can't. These pseudo intellectuals don't have the slightest clue about how things work yet we're told to hang on their every word. Egotistical fop. Why don't you talk about steel and aluminium before you pin blame fop? Don't be in awe of this guy, he's as much an illusion as 911.
Yes, this IS the problem. Not religious fools, not ideological zealots, not crazed delusional sociopaths. Why not blame a Danish cartoonist while you're at it?
I laughed so hard at the title to this. Why oh why does Martin Amis get funnier and funnier the more he turns into a big foreheaded caricature of himself?
Thankyou for putting this up. Sneery old goat he may be, but when I was lucky enough to meet him (for about two seconds) a couple of months ago, I was so awed I nearly shat meself.

@grapejelly, if you loathe Martin Amis so much, why do you post all this stuff? I just BET you're a failed novelist.
