@ 1:16 you can see the physics at work while concentrating on the front bass drum hoop. With every batter strike, the entire system floats in unison. Really cool stuff. Awesome looking drum kit.
@bmm665 Thanks for all the props guys :) Yes, this kit was expensive to build, but most true prototypes are. Look out for news this year about our new series of thin shelled stave & steam bent drums. They take a lot from this prototype, but look very different, & will be affordable too. Very new thinking in drum design, & they sound even better than this prototype.
Wow, incredible looking drums and sounding lovely - warm and resonant. Like to hear some more of the drums though !! Keep up the amazingly innovative work.
Had a quick chat with you at LDS last week after playing the kit which I have to say I found totally amazing. Incredible response at any dynamic and a terrific full sound. I would love to record with them. Free floating is a great concept and so far removed from factory builds.Do you have plans to condense the rims to a smaller thickness , could that be done?
@MacMic333 Hi Rod, great to hear from you. We're working on a production version right now! I'll look very different to these drums, but still use the best features, including either stave or steam bent solid shells.
email me on info@gurudrumworks.co.uk Also, the contact number on the Guru Drumworks site comes straight through to me. Cheers, Andy.
So COOL looking. Well I mean the drum hoops. Looks SO cool. I dont know about the "sting" look or whatever that is but it is a matter of taste I guess. I LOVE those wood drum hoops.
@XXXXKISXXXX That came out wrong. I think it looks great. I just meant if I was to have one for me I think I would like a solid wood color instead of that "string" look. I am not sure if it is "string" or twine or just paint, but its between each drum hoop. I hope I did not come across as insulting the drums. That is obviously part of the look. I think they are the coolest drums I may have ever seen. As for the sound I think they sound great but my speakers are not so good.
@jordanjcm Ah, now I know what you're getting at, sorry :) That's a steel chassis. It holds the shells, bearing edge profiles & hoops in suspension (notice there's no lugs). It's a free floating design, but you're right, those cage chassis could be any shape or colour. As for the sound, listen on a good set of headphones if you can. There's no EQ or processing on this recording, so you need to hear it through good stuff to appreciate how different the tone is. Again, thanks for chiming in.
@jordanjcm No Jordan, just two overheads & a high level room mic about 6 feet in front of the kit. We really tried our best to be as honest as possible. This recording doesn't even get close to the real room sound, but it's the best we could achieve without spending big money. Great local studio though!
@TheRodrigoaquino Thanks Rod. Glad you like it. A lot of work went into creating this instrument. The key sonic features of this prototype will appear in a production kit next year. Take care my friend, & thanks for chiming in.
that opening groove, it busted out of no where and left me all like O_o i have been following the construction of this set the whole way, and it turned out nicely i actually like the look of them quite alot, just for the uniqueness of them. Toms seem to be a bit... er... boingy for lack of better term, i was expecting a much longer and smoother decay with that much density on the hoops but its still an amazing kit, owned by an amazing drummer. congrats man!
@omfgaduck Thanks man, I'm glad you like the looks of the drums, but I'm wondering how you came to the conclusion that the toms are a bit boingy? Did you listen to this clip on PC speakers? If so, I can understand why, but if you listen on really good speakers or headphones, you should be getting a ton of low end sustain & fullness. Please let me know, because I'm very interested. Cheers, & thanks for taking time to listen & follow the story.
@XXXXKISXXXX It was a cheaper pair of headphones i was listening on, but i downloaded it and played it back in my car (only decent system i own) it sounds amazing, but my tens couldnt handle it too loud without distorting, Im guessing due to youtubes compression, But thank you for posting regular updates, and making such wonderful drums. Cant wait for the MP version, may be the kit i buy Im saving up now.
Thanks for all the great comments my drumming brothers! This kit forms the basis for a production series of kits to be released, hopefully early 2012. The production kits will look very different, but will carry many of the sonic benefits of this prototype, & we hope will sound even better!
Nice demo video, I liked the quiet to loud comparison. Would like to hear them with clear skins too, they had a bit of a fibreskyn tone with that combo IMO, and definitely worth more than $2,000 retail, like WTF? Do people have any idea the man hours it takes just to turn a standard shell, let alone something like this?
Please listen through quality headphones, as PC speakers can't hope to pick up the depth in these drums. Remember, no close mic's, no EQ, no tricks. Just 3 overheads & everything run flat.
amazing sound....
