I would never link the doors to punk, i think what a lotof people don't relise is the doors thro jims ability to spell bind and take control of a complete concert crowd opened the doors [no pun inteneded] for other artists to exspress them selves, of course this is just my opinion
No offence but the only thing about this band is.. they really weren't that great live. Jim always seemed to be under the influence and it's like he's struggling trying to sing the songs. They sound WAY better recorded. Just my opinion.
@tHEaNDROGYNOUSwUN If that's your opinion, then i think you are missing the point of the doors. Just look at the concert. How much energy and feeling flowing through the image... You could hear the pain in jim's voice the band struggling to follow their saman, that's totally irresponsible. The recorded ones are missing these.
@tHEaNDROGYNOUSwUN Their live performances had their ups and downs. listen to some of their earlier performances from 1967-1968. the jonathan winters show, ed sullivan, the hollywood bowl (which is my personal favorite), all wonderful performances. listen to their performance on television in 1969. Jim's live performances got kinda shaky around 1969 and after, but they still had some really great shows and defining moments after but the bad nights became more frequent as jim spiraled downward.

There is no ONE label to describe Jim Morrison and the doors..they were rock; they were art; they were the blues; they were poetry; they were life and death; thunder and sunshine; black, white, blue and red...they were the DOORS and they were OPEN....

im a brit and the beatles cant even touch the doors.this band were largely overlooked in britain at the time.i mean how did they miss these guys.surely one of ,,if not THE most important band of the millenium,They actually had something to say ,not like the beatles etc,u should be proud america.glad to know jim was half Scottish .the morrison clan hails from one of the islands off our beautiful west coast...the west is the best.... jim would have loved Scotland
Jim did travel all over and play the world. A mad, driving force. He loved Europe, though at the time most of the places he played weren't ready for it. You do know that The Doors are what started the Punk Rock revolution, right?
No, it's a matter of truth, and to speak the truth is to say of what is that it is and of what is not that it is not. Whether Jim would or would not think it an insult, it's in truth a grave insult. For punk "music" - unlike the music of The Doors - is fundamentally rooted in nihilism. In short, it's anti-music, anti-skill, anti-beauty and all the rest of it. To place The Doors on the same plane as the likes of the Sex Pistols, for example, is then among the most horrid smears against them.
Exactly. I posted that second comment before I read your discussion here. Yeah, punk is supposed to be anti everything, but really it's rebellion against society. Jim Morrison was rebelling against society, too. Some of his behavior is nearly sociopathic, but all of it beautiful. Musically punk has few similarities to The Doors music. That's clear. But some of the ideas behind all of it are very similar. The earliest punk feels like it had Doors influence to me personally, but I don't know.
@justcallmejoe more so Iggy Pop, he set out to sound different than everybody else. The doors are kind of anti-punk because one of the major parts of the punk movement was the idea of getting rid of long solo's and extensive jamming and stripping songs down to short and simple with attitude. This video for example is seven minutes long, the misfits barely broke 2 minutes on some songs.
@Jitpring - I used to feel the same way as you- but I realized there were so many different categories of punk- too many to use the term "punk" in any comparative analysis. One has to be far more specific. For instance- The Ramones were considered punk- but were really "rock". The Doors did, I believe influence many young, music making, anti-establishment artists but by the same token, there were probably many of the first wave of british punk who hated the album oriented classic rock.
@Jitpring - Also, Rollins (Henry of Black Flag) loved Morrison, but the Dead Milkmen made fun of Morrison. It's a toss-up. Rollins, though, is far more talented than the Dead Milkmen- so that should tell you something.
I find this video rather sad. Jim seems almost bored up there, smoking, leaning against the microphone stand, voice almost gone and past his prime. Slow, methodical agony for him I'm sure. Must have been like hell, regurgitating the same verses over and over again to endless seas of nameless faces. By the time this video was recorded, Jim was a mere shadow of his former self. Too much booze, too many drugs and time marched on....
Can you blame him? its at a fucked up time in his life, man. It is just LIFE. We all have these moments, but most of ours aren't on film and in front of 300,000 people is all. Jim was a great, soulful, funny, desperate, crazy man. Love him for what he was.
I have been a huge fan of the Doors for several decades. I think that you have misinterpreted my comment on this one (heavy emphasis on "one") video as a critique of Jim himself. That is not the case at all. I merely stated that I (heavy emphasis on "I") find this particular video rather sad. Would I have loved to see the Doors perform live, you bet, but this video is not a stellar example of Jim's potential.
Jim Morrison got exterminated by the F.B.I just as Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin did, caused by great fear of the changes these guys could make and their radical generation.
and we are all in the great prison of globalization while the puppeteers grins on our faces. freedom is an idea the government couldn't grasp. There has to be Order they say.
@Sunbeamed Jim Morrison wasn't killed by the FBI. Jim Morrison was killed by his intoxication for the feeling you get when you push every boundry ever set by anyone. He took drugs to expand his mind...to break through to the other side. No one can do that forever, and it killed him. To say anything else is to insult his memory. Jim Morrison killed Jim Morrison, and thats the way he wanted it, so thats what he got.
@Sunbeamed they fear the leaders of the youth and I believe kill them off systematically and then make it look like the obvious drug over dose , I dont believe them , my heros live in my heart , the government cant take that from me , Im no puppet , or poser , a true freedom master in new mexico, today on myspace as russell the wizzard
no matter how many years ive listened to this song, it never fades... unfortunately nothing will be re-invented for today's generation to supplement this music.
I keep reading about speculation on jim death, i have read almost everything i can about Jim, And what i know is this The night he died pam had some H on her, jim found it she said it was coke so he snorted it to see if she was lying, Then he was placed ina batrh tub which is what people used to do when u OD on H also there was a man, a french count who used to sleep with pam and do herion with her the day after jim died, The count arrived to meet the stones claming he sold the H jim died from
Quelle maturité musicale!! The doors c'est avant tout du talent et un chanteur charismatique.... et dire qu'on compare Julien Doré avec JimMorrison! monde de merde
Another thing that I find very interesting is Jims philosophy. Jim was very into Fredrick Nietzsche, the philosopher. Nietzsche hated alcohol! Jim must have understood more than most people how alcohol poisons. To quote Nietzsche, Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.
People do get mixed up with Joplin, who DID die from Heroin OD. Hendrix technically died from CHOKING, because he vomited from pills and did not have the wherewithal to physically spit it out, etc. The medics also took Hendrix out in a chair, upright, to the ambulance; opposed to using a gurney, horizontally. If they had cleared his AIRWAY, before transferring him, I think he (Hendrix) would have lived through that day anyways.
well these medical data r interesting...it tells us how but not why...
I think they were explorers of unknown territories (drugs,stardom,rnroll...)and let death trap them coz they knew they wouldn't explore further grounds alive(rock is dead, inspiration exhausted).Others like Iggy,Jagger or Lou reed survived, i guess they were less eager to see what's on the other side?
He ended up bleeding out into his abdominal cavity, from his stomach, intestines, probably, till there was no blood to pump around his circulatory system. Shock... He did do drugs, but his true mistress was ETOH; the poor sot. I'm sure even that night he did mix drugs with alcohol, which is a drug anyways
I read that heart attack is listed on the death certificate; which really could be true due to shock from the hemorrhage. So, ultimately I feel the death certificate is correct. Im really surprised with all the data; I havent seen another person suggest "gastric hemorrhage. Jim, a chronic alcoholic, certainly damaged the lining of his precious delicate stomach lining. Throwing up BLOOD is not odin. C
Jim Douglas Morrison was definitely an alcoholic. I really think that he had gastric hemorrhage. He bled out. With a medical education; Ive searched though so much material on Jim (stalker ;)) The night he expired, to paraphrase Pam, I handed him an orange bowl, he threw up in it and I emptied it several times. It appeared to have blood in it. Jim told her that he felt better; (shock) and hed be into bed with her in a minute.
Wow, you didn't read shit you fucking goof. If you read anything with significance, he wasn't an asshole, yeah he did drugs and got drunk. So what? Who doesn't? The whole thing was an image to him "The Lizard King". he was a poet man, not an asshole. People do some stupid shit when they're drunk it doesn't mean they're an asshole. Go read No One Here Gets Out Alive. It's a good book. Jim wasn't an ass man.Look at interviews from Ray Manzarek, he said they had a good time he wasn't a bitter drunk
thanx for the reply jbeck and yeah i read the book my friend.....every one has a opinion..and that i respect...lets agree he was and is an outstanding songwriter and singer......loong live big jim mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......
& he hated how Oliver Stone portrayed Jim Morrison in the movie,if you've seen it.Like,he wasn't the drunk crazy lunatic like they made him out to be. I'm not trying to give you a history lesson I just hate when people talk about shit they have no clue about.Read into it more man, he was a fun/funny guy to be around, said so many people.A lot of people held grudges on Jim cuz they didnt like witnessing his self destruction with alcohol, but read the book it gave me a whole other outlook on Jim man
I heard that before, that there were no "icons" in rock anymore-- I do agree with that, there really haven't been any singers or guitar players that have been called "icon" in a lot of years. The last person that was called an icon in rock music, as far as I know, was Amy Lee. Anyone got an opinion on that?
This version does not get the half of him. Listen children and I will tell you what a great man he was. He had the courage to tell his father that he was going to kill him. Oh, and ther is more about his mother and sister, but I can not tell you that for if I do this comment will be cut. But aparently I can tell you this, and that is is song has been mutillated.
This song isnt about his parents, its not about he wants to kill his father.... its about a soldier who came from a war and came home , and killt his own family. Its not about Jim's parents and family
yea Ray Manzarek talks about it in his book "Light My Fire". I agree tho there's something about the earlier performances of this song that just entrances me, that So West it's Far East/Peter Pan kind of quality that was intriguing
The point is that music legends like Jim and many more go unnoticed in todays generations. He has put forth so much and invented many elements in rock, blues, phsycadelic, music etc. and in my opinon should be preaised for it
Yea I agree. Their band influenced so much, you can hear elements from the doors, stuff that they STARTED in all genres of music, and in all forms, wether it be the lyrics, the style, the keyboards, the guitar, etc. you can hear little bits of them in everything and honestly anyone who says the suck is just saying it to be cool and different, like hot topic kids saying power rangers are cool, they arent.
humans i am one too. realise that people like Jim Morrison never die or do yo think Mozes is dead dont believe the lies. But i guess you will call him MOJO somday, the savier of poem and bringer of Inuit hip hop.
I'd believe the first story.. all of a sudden, after thirty-seven years it was different? He died taking a bath. Except for the karate chop to his head. I still look back on that..
bottom line is Jim was way too evoloved for this planet. way WAY ahead of his time. whether people relaize it or not, the lyrics in a lot of his songs/poetry echo ancient laws including the Sun. I truly believed he was tapped into a parallel universe. Doesn't matter how he got there (drugs, alcholol, whatever) he was there, and recorded his travels. Wish I could have met him. Journey well Jim.
Jim you were the shit. Fuck Grateful Dead and all those other 60s bands. You're music was true and from the heart. I can't wait to see you when I die.
Jim never did heroin, he hated it.One theory says that on the night of 2-3 July 1971 he came back to his aparment drunk to find Pam awake.Pam was mad at him and when he asked if the heroin on the table was coke, she said yes. Then Jim snorted it and had a heart attack.Quite plausible to me, especially since Pam's heroin addiction was a source of conflict between the two.

If they had cleared his AIRWAY, before transferring him, I think he (Hendrix) would have lived through that day anyways.
gigsup1996 3 years ago 2
well these medical data r interesting...it tells us how but not why...
I think they were explorers of unknown territories (drugs,stardom,rnroll...)and let death trap them coz they knew they wouldn't explore further grounds alive(rock is dead, inspiration exhausted).Others like Iggy,Jagger or Lou reed survived, i guess they were less eager to see what's on the other side?
itnow 3 years ago
Well, more like they were luckier. I don't think anyone can accuse Iggy of not doing enough drugs.
thejesman 3 years ago
i mean it was some sort of slow unconscious suicide which invited death to step in.
Iggy, no matter how many tons of drugs he took, wanted another fuck on this earth, see how physical he appears
but of course these aren't facts but only suppositions...
itnow 3 years ago
He ended up bleeding out into his abdominal cavity, from his stomach, intestines, probably, till there was no blood to pump around his circulatory system. Shock... He did do drugs, but his true mistress was ETOH; the poor sot. I'm sure even that night he did mix drugs with alcohol, which is a drug anyways
gigsup1996 3 years ago 2
I read that heart attack is listed on the death certificate; which really could be true due to shock from the hemorrhage. So, ultimately I feel the death certificate is correct. Im really surprised with all the data; I havent seen another person suggest "gastric hemorrhage. Jim, a chronic alcoholic, certainly damaged the lining of his precious delicate stomach lining. Throwing up BLOOD is not odin. C
gigsup1996 3 years ago 2
Jim Douglas Morrison was definitely an alcoholic. I really think that he had gastric hemorrhage. He bled out. With a medical education; Ive searched though so much material on Jim (stalker ;)) The night he expired, to paraphrase Pam, I handed him an orange bowl, he threw up in it and I emptied it several times. It appeared to have blood in it. Jim told her that he felt better; (shock) and hed be into bed with her in a minute.

morrison was a great songwriter/singer but
from what ive read and heard he was an asshole
as a human being......yeah real icon
sweetdaddy0000 3 years ago
Wow, you didn't read shit you fucking goof. If you read anything with significance, he wasn't an asshole, yeah he did drugs and got drunk. So what? Who doesn't? The whole thing was an image to him "The Lizard King". he was a poet man, not an asshole. People do some stupid shit when they're drunk it doesn't mean they're an asshole. Go read No One Here Gets Out Alive. It's a good book. Jim wasn't an ass man.Look at interviews from Ray Manzarek, he said they had a good time he wasn't a bitter drunk
jbeck1337 3 years ago 2
thanx for the reply jbeck and yeah i read the book my friend.....every one has a opinion..and that i respect...lets agree he was and is an outstanding songwriter and singer......loong live big jim mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......
sweetdaddy0000 3 years ago

But aparently I can tell you this, and that is is song has been mutillated.
ehswan 3 years ago
This song isnt about his parents, its not about he wants to kill his father.... its about a soldier who came from a war and came home , and killt his own family. Its not about Jim's parents and family
flsej 3 years ago 3
yea Ray Manzarek talks about it in his book "Light My Fire". I agree tho there's something about the earlier performances of this song that just entrances me, that So West it's Far East/Peter Pan kind of quality that was intriguing

The point is that music legends like Jim and many more go unnoticed in todays generations. He has put forth so much and invented many elements in rock, blues, phsycadelic, music etc. and in my opinon should be preaised for it
SIjeBAb 3 years ago
Yea I agree. Their band influenced so much, you can hear elements from the doors, stuff that they STARTED in all genres of music, and in all forms, wether it be the lyrics, the style, the keyboards, the guitar, etc. you can hear little bits of them in everything and honestly anyone who says the suck is just saying it to be cool and different, like hot topic kids saying power rangers are cool, they arent.

bottom line is Jim was way too evoloved for this planet. way WAY ahead of his time. whether people relaize it or not, the lyrics in a lot of his songs/poetry echo ancient laws including the Sun. I truly believed he was tapped into a parallel universe. Doesn't matter how he got there (drugs, alcholol, whatever) he was there, and recorded his travels. Wish I could have met him. Journey well Jim.

Morrison croaked in Pam's bathroom.
