  • I AM A SURREALIST FILM!! ONLY INTELLECTUALS WILL UNDERSTAND ME!!!

  • someone raped that little girl.

  • I feel empty.

  • I CAN"T STOP CRYING! What I got out of this film is that regardless of how hard you fight to keep the things you love, however much hell you go through, they won't last. They'll disappear and you'll be left with..nothing. Everything -LIFE- is pointless and bleak so why bother even trying to stop the inevitable in the first place? I understand why the lady committed suicide. The raw pain and sorrow is tangible here.

  • I need to read Jacque Lacan again!

  • the director made the film in memory of his wife who committed suicide. The cat with half a soul is supposed to symbolize her depression, and the male cat is supposed to represent her husband, doing everything he can to make her well again. The ending, where everyone turns off like a television, is supposed to represent death, and how inevitable it is. Even through that long quest, the cat could not prevent his sister's death in the end.

  • @vio7361 The director, Tatsuo Sato, never even KNEW her. The original manga artist, Chiyomi Hashiguchi, was married to a man named Yamano Hajime. Indeed she did commit suicide but the whole thing about the director being her husband is a tasteless myth created by idiots. This lie only serves to enhance viewers's empathy, nothing more.

  • @homicidalpsychokat i dont know anything bout it, i jsut pasted this to give people any sort of idea of what it might be about. Personally, it helped me enjoy and understand the animation better after reading any explanation about it...this was one I stumbled on so I shared it..as for its accuracy, well I guess thats for others to find out on their own if they really want to.

  • God lost his cabbage :(

  • i don't get it at all ... at all !!

  • @packcatza Yeah... I feel like i was just watched 30 minutes of Cabagges LCD... if that makes any sense...then again, nothing here does @_@

  • It's weird but beautiful...

  • very sad :'(((

  • That last scene....

    Damn, that last fucking scene. ; - ;

  • erm... am i the only one who didnt get it?:(

  • @Crysetha Did you not notice how water was a major theme? The kid drowned at the beginning. His sister never died, he did.

  • @FermentedTinal So.. in "real" the little one died in the beginning? And it was ..dreaming ? ^^°

  • @FermentedTinal now you mention it you have right

this make sense for all the film thats why people turn off ,because he stop to dream (people say when people die have memories or dreams of her lifes) and die in the end

  • erm...........

  • I don't feel anything? or I just don't get it? the only thing I feel is "it is beautiful"

  • this video is a work of art

  • The water elephant represents life and parenthood, right, and the fact that it died shows nothing is immune to death? At least, that's what I understood. This movie has a lot of deep views on death, so I thought that worked....

  • I cried T-T

  • am i the only one crying at the end?

  • @aaaniime its not just me! *sob*

  • @aaaniime no u're not the only one :'((((

  • i love this OHHHH SOOOO MUCH.its so dark and disturbing and cute at the same time!

  • Truly amazing!

  • I almost stopped after part 1. What a foolish mistake that would have been.

Though I think this safely makes its way off the list of "Things to Watch While on Hallucinogens"

  • Just beautiful. It's obviously quite a trippy animation, but it has such depth and emotion. I'm definitely going to buy this, it's a masterpiece.

  • I noticed the views decrease from part 1-3 ..this is apparently not for everyone.

    ..Cat Soup <3 !

  • Very sad. =(

  • Very pink floyd

  • Comment removed

  • Anyone else notice that the God who took the sister's soul was different to the one controlling time? Possibly suggesting there are multiple Gods - one dealing with people, life and death, and another one who is completely heartless and likes Earth soup?

  • @xLeezox

It could sugest two sides to God, just as every human has more than one side.

  • Trippy

  • Amazing. So silent, and still managed to keep me watching till the very end.

So strange and yet so logical :D

  • I feel like a moth following its own death.

  • 1:03 So, an elephant made of water just gave birth to a clothed cat.

I'm gonna love explaining this movie to my friends!

  • 9 people are allergic to cats....

    bad taste, i know...

  • This was the weirdest and most amazing thing I've ever watched...

  • @KroweOfficial it made my head hurt at the end

  • @KroweOfficial Not to mention spectacularly morbid.

  • Every single movie is able to make me cry ;_;

  • @MagicalDroplover even horrors? :D lol.

  • @albinocify YES!

Actually, I like being scared to death so much that I start crying like a baby, Even if I never actually cry xD

  • @MagicalDroplover Lol, i was just kidding. But yeah i like being scared too. ... Sometimes i need a blanket. xD

  • is it possible to get the soundtrack of cat soup?

  • What a sad ending.

  • those cats should have more influence on people around the whole world

  • Wow, this movie is so sad!! Its true meaning behind it also means alot :'( p.s the sighn on the shop says tofu! Im happy im good enough at japanese to be able to read that!!.

  • I don't want to read the breakdowns, for some reason I like it better when I have no idea whats going on

  • Eh, at least he saved his sister.

  • @CutMan567

However, you must take into consideration the meaning of it, and watch the end: the cats all disappear, leaving the youngest one alone, meaning all that effort to save his sister... wasted, futile. In this OVA, the youngest cat represents the creator of it, and his sister represents his wife. His wife became depressed and commited suicide. Go read the breakdown for a better explanation. I can't type all this, I'm crying so much.

  • @krourou2 I know the meaning, but at least he still saved his sister. Even if for a moment he was still with his sister again.

  • Awww 4chan produced a friendship. How nice. Also, this movie is so amazing. I don't know exactly what the meaning is, maybe something contrasting nature and technology, but it's beautiful movie nonetheless

  • Ok, I was watching through this whole thing, kinda going "...what" here and there and admiring how well animated this was.

And then this short little film ended, and the beach scene that was mentioned by Aicirt8 start playing in the credits. With the rewinding music box and the repeated scene of the father ushering the sister cat to stand by her mother and kid brother.

And I just started bawling. I was crying so loud that my roommate came to check up on me. Tatsuo Sato WHY U DO DIS

  • @Melohalo You wouldn't have happened to make a thread about this on /a/ recently, would you?

  • @thesunisone Guilty as charged, sir.

  • @Melohalo Yeah I kinda thought so lol; it was a good thread though, so kudos to you for making it.

  • @Melohalo

    SAME exact reaction.

  • @PlatinumIvory Haha!

    Are you me!?

But yeah, inexplicably powerful stuff. Because of this short film I can now look genuinely sad on demand by recalling this scene. Makes my excuses just that much more convincing.

  • i dont want to say theres a "correct" way to interperet this short film but most of you are completely wrong.

  • i absouletly love twisted beautiful surreal films like this that have alot of symbolic themes hidden in them. just like spirited away, pans labryinth etc.

  • this is a very saddening tale. it made me cry.

  • WHAT DOES THIS MEAANN!

  • @RydetheTyde Please read the highest rated comments above.

  • my...my...my brain...it.... melted.

Oh who needs a brain! THIS WAS AWESOME!

  • mi trauma es tan grande... qe cuando crezca sere administrador de empresas

  • whaaa, this is definitely the most astonishing thing i've ever seen...now THAT is surreal...and so full of many meanings everywhere, symbolism...at the beginning I just watched, but then i got like petrified...that was something!

  • ...Ultimately, no matter what measure of control we gain, we're playthings of the cosmos and grains of sand in something far bigger than we can comprehend. (So we can all just relax and enjoy ourselves.)

  • its weird and random but I LIKE IT :D

  • the ends so sad :c

  • Note to self: never eat a strange forgein dish while watching cat soup on youtube. It's going to fuck you up and creep you out even more.

  • wow i realized that thing he was cutting open wasnt a fruit thing. It was the world without water.

  • FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF.................CCCCCCCCCKKKKK

  • ....................FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-

  • Should probably get a higher res copy of this

  • my mind is seriously not well now.

  • 7:31 It has four pieces of fried tofu. It's 200 yen

7:39 You're welcome! >:( (i guess that would be sarcasm lol)

    And awwz!! D:

Did the creator base this on his family? I know the brother is him and the sister is his wife, but would the Mom and Dad cats be like his real father and mother?

  • ........Damn. Ummmm...... wow. Yeah.

  • I think its quite a nice artistic way of putting life and death on a screen. Beats all the morbid stuff you normally see.

  • It's creepy and disturbing, and some parts freaked me out, but the ending was incredibly sad. I like this movie, in all its strangeness.

  • What did the blue person at the beginning symbolize?

  • @stichguy At the start of the movie? I think he was supposed to represent death taking his sister's soul.

  • @stichguy He's the Japanese patron saint of aborted fetuses and dead children.

  • 2012 in a nutshell.

  • I feel really dumb right now.

  • This thing is pretty insane (but I do understand it however)and yet...I can't stop watching it...

  • *is extremely confused*

  • FFUUU, I MUST have that ending song...

• @Lushikinz Way to copy-paste my comment, bro.

  • @TabbyRoadMusic Because it's true and I want people to see that.

  • @Lushikinz At least say, "written by TabbyRoadMusic"

  • @Lushikinz Posting something multiple times does make it true just so you know.

  • FFFFF Those time frozen waves reminded me of Chrono Cross.

  • if you think this is some beautiful art work. please find jesus

  • I think not only does this talk about religion, but how we effect the world. o.o

  • (CONT'D) God causes only harm to the world here; in his selfish quest for his bowl of soup. Perhaps the message of this film is that in happiness can only be obtained through one's own actions and motivations, not by following a higher power.

Death is also presented in a blunt and brutal fashion; no mention of any afterlife for those who die. This, again, shows the creator may take somewhat of an anti-religious stance.

What are your opinions on this?

  • @TabbyRoadMusic Those are a lot of good points. I think this definitely displays God, in a negative light. It seems to be saying that if you believe in God, you must pick between Him being all-powerful and benevolent. If he was both, he wouldn't do nothing and watch us suffering, so he either cares but can't do anything about it, or he has the power but is just indifferent.

Cat Soup seems to displays God as all-powerful and indifferent, manipulating people and the cats as if they were his toys.

  • What I'm getting out of this seems quite different than others' opinions.

The continuous theme throughout this film seems to be of religion, and a particularly negative view of it. The cats are continuously confronted with religious imagery and ideas throughout their quest to find "their soul", and yet, never seem to be assisted by any of it. (Thinking particularly of the harm the magician caused them, along with the water bird, and god in this segment.)

  • Wow. I don't really know what else to say for this except that it's like surrealist artwork. Sure, it takes a while to get used to, but it has such depth to it. What I love about this is, once you get past the initial "what the hell was that", you really get to thinking about what the whole thing means. *.*

  • Great work! Great title design (credits in the end)!!!

  • 3:35-3:38 ROFL dat was cute

  • The origin is sad. But why does everyone find this so weird? I'm not saying it's normal, but it certainly isn't that odd, even without the origin.

  • @Aicirt8 Wow, shit just got a lot more real...

  • BREAKDOWN:

The sister dies and her little brother tries to save her, but rips her soul in half so when he puts it back in her body, she is alive but brain-dead. He goes on a search to find the other half so he can completely bring her back, and eventually he does and then they go home.

The ending, where all the cats disappear, is symbolism for them dying, until the little cat is alone. It is meant to show the futility of his actions, because they all die in the end.

  • @Aicirt8 do u know where i can watch the cat soup series?

  • @laurenkiki Ya, its here on this site =) I'll warn you tho, there is very little similarities between this and the series, although both are good in their way. Just search for Nekojiru Gekijou and you should be able to find it

  • @Aicirt8 it's not as simple as that

  • @jonathandannel definitely not, but there is a limit to how much you can post here on youtube. I'd love nothing more than to sit down with a couple other fans and have a good long discussion on what the creator's messages were. This is one of those anime that you could write a ten page essay about and still find new interpretations.

  • @Aicirt8 its so entertaining yet so depressing at the same time

  • @Aicirt8

This OVA was written by Masaaki Yuasa (an amazing artist who has done plenty of other work like this that people should look into) and directed by a guy who did Martian Sucessor Nadesico. Neither of these people knew Nekojiru when she was alive and the idea that either of them was married to her is absurd. Yes, this OVA is based on the works of Nekojiru and yes she did commit suicide, but trying to invent some urban myth where it was directed by "Her Husband" just cheapens it entirely

  • @Digiwizzard I am not trying to invent an "urban myth". I respect this OVA too much for that. It's too bad that information isn't true. Where I heard this was from many different people and forums so it seemed reliable. It seems that her husband, Yamano Hajime, did continue her cat soup manga series.

  • The movie may be a touching tribute to Nekojiru and her body of work, but there is NO reason to take credit away from her and the actual directors in favour of some imaginary forlorn husband trying to make amends.

  • Water Elephant Anal!! I love this!

  • i like it. They all were selfish.

  • really lovly movie

  • No wonder this is catagorized as mindf***k...

  • I feel a vacuous feeling in the pit of my stomach. That poor kitten. :,/

  • i almost lost it when they were goin back in time and god was controlling by a cabbage o.0

  • i believe this movie is interesting and beautiful in its own way. i guess im into odd animes like this. if you think about it this movie does kinda make since and is sad. there were weird parts but the ending made me want to cry... because after all of that he lost everything. all and all i think this is a brilliant movie.

  • this is one of the most fucked up and idiotic movies I've ever seen. fucking ridiculous

  • Let me lay it out for you:

The end is because slowly everyone dies.

First the father, then the mother, then the sister, and finally the brother. And when the family dies, the house dies because it rots away, ect.

This was super beautiful... And I understood all of it.

  • i dont get the symbolism of things, but its so sad and quite beautiful

  • The god that does not listen to its people. Does not care, only about his blood-soup

  • @randomwitchdoctor another reason why i converted to an atheist.

  • i dont get the ending everything just disappears

  • WHAT THE FCK HAPPENED IN THE END?!?!

  • I really want the soundtrack

    Credits are so sad :(

  • It really wasn't really that confusing. The cat was journeying through an underworld of sorts to get back the other part of his sister's soul. He got the first part back from the weird dude who was taking his dead sister away, who had told him to find a flower. Also, god apparently likes cabbages. Filled with blood. Yeah, all in all, that WAS pretty odd, wasn't it?

  • Well, I quite liked that.

Got to say, though - I was reminded of Kaiba a number of times. The art style is oddlty similar and distinctive, for a start. The patchwork-pet that the old lady was sewing in the desert looked just like Patch from Abipa, and those guillotines reversing when time was turning back were practically identical to the ones implanted in Neiro's memory. I wonder if the creators of that series took inspiration from Cat Soup?...

  • @ApricotSea Mr. Masaaki Yuasa worked on both Cat Soup and Kaiba which is likely why you see a resemblance. He did Cat Soup's screenplay and planning as the animation producer. Later, when working on Kaiba, he was the series director and creator, working on episode screenplays, storyboards and direction. :) A fantastic artist.

  • @MixMadMen Ah, I never knew that! No wonder there's a similarity. I do have to agree with you completely; the more I see of his work, the more I love it.

  • what the fuck did i just watch ?!?!

  • can anyone pleeeaaaase tell me the name of the music in the ending credits and possibly the composer?

  • it's about death and time and a pityless cruel god who just does not care. Love is the only thing that remains and that makes it bearable - or even worse when it's gone.

  • that was intensely philosophical with so many different insights behind every second.

i was thoroughly creeped but it was very interesting.

  • This anime makes me want to be a vegetarian...

  • @ItachiTenshi YYYYEEEESSSS!!!!!!!! me to

  • a qe loooooooooooco

  • I don't understand all of the symbolism, but I can see this is a beautiful story about doing anything to save the one you love, even (literally in this case) going to the ends of the Earth.

  • Somehow, the ending makes this so much sadder. Just rewinding everything over and over again would normally be mundane, but in context that is probably the most depressing thing I've seen in a while. And this whole movie, although short, makes my head spin.

  • Fuckin' weird.

And yet, I'm really happy I watched it.

  • DUDE i am high everything moves so perfectly its freakin amazing he knew what he was doing

  • that was one of the most bizarre yet beautiful things I have watched in awhile

  • A wonderfull but a little bit strange and creepy movie. The cats are really cute ;)

But, I don´t understand the end...Why does all disappeared?

  • ...wow is all if have to say.

  • I never noticed all the water symbolism till someone pointed it out for me... Dur dur dur

  • Oops, I meant "toying"... goddamn spellcheck.

  • I think it's about God toting with the world while the boy cat searches for his sister. At the end, she is restored, but God is bored/unhappy with the way the world came out, so he carelessly gets rid of it. The brother and sister cats disappear. I think it's try to say that God doesn't care about individual suffering and all our hard work is nothing in the end.

  • If you try to turn back the clock to get that bowl of soup known as life...

    All you love will end.

  • This is such a sad story. But, at the same time, mystical and beautiful. It's such a unique tale. It truely is one of those stories and movies that can represent so many things, but if you don't view it the correct way, all those things will stay hidden. It really is a great mini movie. I'm so glad that I took the time to watch this all the way through. I'm defianatly going to make an AMV of this now :).

  • fucking cats ,man lememme fucking tell ya, like trippy man l keAMNKgsidfhnbbjhgfbkdhsbckhdbi

  • ...I don't get it. :(

  • holy cow, all of a sudden it all hit me! I totally get it now!

  • very nice story we need more anime like this it makes you think

  • That was beautiful, I was nearly crying. (Sorry for bad English)

  • the mars volta/tool + anime cat = cat soup

  • I think this symbolizes people meddling too much with things they shouldnt, example in the movie being time because it results in the death of everyone and everything. The whole cat thing is just a side story in my eyes.

  • O I get it now, we all die because God lost half His cabbage.

  • @MrAugust767 not even close

  • @MrAugust767

    His blood cabbage O.o

  • I feel like this cat, but in the human's world.

    We know nothing.

  • This is a bad acid trip thats somehow philosopical and teaches you to not ignore the other children entirely when one is sick.

  • Well, looks like I'm going to be crying myself to sleep tonight

  • Well I've had my slice of "What the FUCK Pie" For this century

  • what the back of the DVD box says (concerning the story): "When little kitten Nyaako's soul is stolen by Death, she and her brother Nyatta embark on a bizarre journey to get it back. In the surreal dreamscape of the Other Side, they encounter many fantastic characters and remarkable, often disturbing adventures."

  • yeah i dont really understand the story nor do i care.. thats just cuz im lazy though :)

  • Am I the only one who finds the last area (The steel flower swamp place) absolutely intriguing? I wish they had spent at least 5 more minutes or more in that place!

  • Well, the long legged creatures are definitely sending to Dali, and I'm sure I saw some Alberto Giacometti in there also. It's full of motifs, symbolism and without a solid knowledge of the modern art history and of mythology and religion, it's hard to fully grasp. That being said, some things still fly over my head but I'm glad I've recognized most.

  • @bamb04 I immediately thought of Dali with the long-legged things.

  • O.O

  • carajo!, esas si son pesadillas...

    fuck!, they are nightmares...

    neta, está bien chingón

    really, that´s fantastic

  • in the beginning, was the main cat's sister going with death...? and then he got back half her soul...?
