So it's been 6 months since this video. How did it turn out? did you truck the compost to your garden, or did you build a bed over the top of the pile?
Using a polypropylene tarp I imagine you will still get a fair amount of weed growth.
Those blue tarps let a lot of light through.
You would be better covering with black plastic or the black heavy duty ground cover fabric (or carpet as already mentioned).
Also although this method will (if lights excluded) work to break down the green material it will do noting to kill pathogens & weed seeds unlike a well built compost heap.
I saw a old tralis, not my own obiously,barowd....the entire thing had an endless tree/thorn brush attached through the screen. Id put a first layer of grass on there but It didnt have a lasting air pocket so i moved it a few more inches by added some metal wire like on ur raised garden beds, gee pretty soon after everything was dry, really fresh. The unit had ben pushed to bright sun, no connection to cali getin rain, it held up to the weather in more ways than one, didnt need a tarp&)
Instead of using a tarp you could use old carpet, that is if you know anyone who's getting new carpet. Don't cut the carpet up, if possible just roll straight up and move. Secure with bricks. Works just as well. Carpet's free.
@theproducegarden Hi, we are banning carpets on our allotments site (120 plots). It would have been ok if people used "natural Fibres" carpets but they don't, so all have to go... rightly so too.
lol dude you should start a fashion line on your website too.. Typical Aussie clobber for the working man in the garden! don't forget to show us the progress. If you are like me, you will dig it up and put it on the garden and then realise you didn't film it before hand. :)
@TheChalkychalk No worries I enjoy all your videos your the reason I am now growing loads of my own fruit and Veg, had a good crop this year and Im well happy about it. Thanks for all the info you put out.
If you use all of those weeds for your compost will that put weeds in your garden when you use it later? Just wondering if the seeds of the weeds will keep. Thanks
@BradinOkinawa if the temperature in the compost heap gets hot enough, it will 'cook' any seeds beyond any possibility of fertilisation. In Australia, this is not very hard to achieve, particularly under plastic for several months. Black plastic is even better because it absorbs so much heat.
@skinnyviv thank you for the response. That is good to know. Where I live it gets quite hot here in the summer as well. 40C+ I will have to try this out sometime
@BradinOkinawa For those in cooler climates (ie, a bit less in the solar input side of things), black plastic (as skinnyviv) said, perforated and covered by clear plastic. This will usually create an enormous amount of condensation, which drips through the perforations in the black plastic. Nice way to "steam clean" your garden. I wouldn't suggest this if you're in very warm/dry climate. The heat generated may be excessive.
I hadn't thought about covering my piles: maybe I'd better do that. I want to put most of my lawn into vegies come Spring. Thanks for sharing that. What are you planning for that area?

@clairesallotment good idea, just have to be careful as some carpets contain asbestos believe it or not
theproducegarden 1 year ago
@theproducegarden Really? God that stuff gets everywhere. They're getting it out of buildings and put it in carpets, that's sensible.
