Oh, wasn't it just awful when you were a young adolescent and didn't receive a Valentines card? I used to think it ought to be called "Everyone from the opposite sex hates me" day. I agree with your points about anaesthetising young people to the pitfalls in life. Sadly, we all have to go through our "Gutterball " times and kids should be prepared for them too.

At portuguese schools everybody gets their valentine's letters in a big box, then on valentine's day someone will get the letters to their destination! I remember i use to get a few letters BUT ALWAYS GIRLS, what about the chubby cute guys??

I think it's ok for kids to be protected a little bit...I think around 7 or 8 years old is when they need to start dealing with gutterballs and missing valentines. I think stressing participation is more important than competition, because they have the rest of their lives to be horrified that the world is a pointlessly-competitive place. I say ride the pink horsey until you are forced off by the police. Happy Valentine's Day!

It's been my problem all along...plus I had gutterballs too. And come to think of it, I don't think I got valentines. Although I recall giving a valentine to the pretty girl in class with my friend's name on it. Wow was he mad that I made a girl think he liked her (which he did). My problem was I spelled her name wrong on BOTH of our valentines, so I just made myself look like a foo x2.
