He only had to be captain for 10 years becuase of his and Elizabeth's true love... if she remained faithful to him during those ten years and was there when he returned then the curse was broken (which happened in the scene after the credits). I think that Jack would want to be captain because he doesn't have that and the curse would never be broken so he could be forever 'undead' or whatever. (By the way, I'm not shipping either relationship just pointing out what the writers did)
There were some scenes cut out. It's also very subtle in some spots, like when bootstrap says that she cannot come with them,and then says, "someday, sure, ten years from now, the steep price to pay for what's been done." There are some other spots it is mentioned but not fully explained, like when davy jones and calypso are talking and he asks her why she was not there after ten years of doing his job when they could have been together once again.

I was losing it in the theatre, I knew he would die before I saw the film, and I had already had a small cry before watching and I thought I was all set. But it came so suddenly, and I cried harder than ever. Will being stabbed was even more of a suprise, and I was so relieved Jack came to the rescue. When James died was bad enough, I was shattered, but when Will was stabbed - I think I reacted a bit like Elizabeth, and almost jumped up from my seat, which was rather funny in the cinema :)

He only had to be captain for 10 years. If you watched the scene after the credits, Will was coming back for good then. The reason Davy Jones had to continue to serve is because Calypso didn't wait for him. When Davy Jones came back after 10 years, she wasn't there, so he wasnt freed from the Flying Dutchman. Elizabeth remained loyal to him, so Will is freed from being the captian of the FD (hence the green flash, thats a sign of curse being broken).

haha yeah, believe me, it took me forever to understand. My sister was reading an interview with T&T and they said thats what it meant. Thats why Davy Jones became all..squidy. He was bitter about Calypso not waiting for him, so he stopped transporting souls and began enslaving them, so he broke the deal.
Well I understood that Davy Jones part, but I thought this "job" (haha) was for good... But wait a minute... then why was Jack so keen on becoming the captain? He wanted immortality, right? So? Do you maybe have a link to that interview?
I love this video! I saw the movie last night and am going again tonight. I was so sad when he stabbed Will...Right after he and Elizabeth get married and everything. I loved the whole Will Liz relationship. I hate the Jack and Liz stuff. lol!

I was watching this is the movie theater with my best friend, and when both of them died, I screamed.
On the other hand, when Will died, I screamed, started to cry, and jumped into her lap it scared me so much.

I didn´t know that Will is freed to be the captain after ten years...I thought he have to be the captain forever...

When James died was bad enough, I was shattered, but when Will was stabbed - I think I reacted a bit like Elizabeth, and almost jumped up from my seat, which was rather funny in the cinema :)

Thank you, I'm glad you liked it. And about Will, yes he didn't die, but 1 day in 10 years!!!! COME ON! That's cruel!!!! They will have hardly more than a week together before she inevitably dies (if we are optimistic and say that she's going to live for 90 years - very unlikely)... I think that's almost as bad as if he had died... :((((

He only had to be captain for 10 years. If you watched the scene after the credits, Will was coming back for good then. The reason Davy Jones had to continue to serve is because Calypso didn't wait for him. When Davy Jones came back after 10 years, she wasn't there, so he wasnt freed from the Flying Dutchman. Elizabeth remained loyal to him, so Will is freed from being the captian of the FD (hence the green flash, thats a sign of curse being broken).

haha yeah, believe me, it took me forever to understand. My sister was reading an interview with T&T and they said thats what it meant. Thats why Davy Jones became all..squidy. He was bitter about Calypso not waiting for him, so he stopped transporting souls and began enslaving them, so he broke the deal.

I love this video! I saw the movie last night and am going again tonight. I was so sad when he stabbed Will...Right after he and Elizabeth get married and everything. I loved the whole Will Liz relationship. I hate the Jack and Liz stuff. lol!

well, he was never a huge huge character...and with all that was going on, they did not need to find another way to make the story more complex...I was kinda expecting him getting the axe

Are you a big James-fan or is it just because of AWE? I was a big fan before too, actually he played an important part in making me love the English language - his deep voice is sooo OMG! :) I was hoping for more of him in the 3. movie and what did I get??? :((((

Yes that was the first of many times I almost got a heartattack during watching that damn movie! But I knew it as soon as he started to talk to Elizabeth, I knew it would not end well! *sniff* I was soo angry - well after I stopped crying... :(((
