  • i was born and bred in corby, those were hard times, yes it has its own accent called corbyite, its had reinvented itself and is now prospering, and has become the fastest growing town in the uk.....

  • Aah..!I thought it wasnt acceoting my comments so I had to post them about three times!Sometimes either youtube or my service provider seems really slow!Peace` ye`all!

  • That is Ravenscraig in Motherwell, the first picture!I always assumed this was about the closure and subsequent throwing into unemployment of thousands of men!

  • thanks for that, I must have been reading the wrong article,it could have been someone speculating about the story behind the song rather than a factual account.I Feel a bit of a twat now thats for sure, never mind I will take that on the chin, cheers,

  • its actually grangemouth, near polmont woods, i confirmed this with tony butler oh and also the photographer... i live there hasn't changed much..unlike ravenscraig where i worked as well xx

  • Hi there, thanks for clearing that up. Can you please ask (if possible) if the actual song refers to Corby? I appreciate that the Steeltown cover photos do not represent Corby.I would like to know the real story and If Tony Butler could confirm or otherwise. Cheers and all the best,

  • yes it is about how a load of scots guys decanted there and well lost there jobs..i think people in corby have a hybrid english/scottish accent thing going on weird..its a place which has totally reinvented itself though, ravenscraig the same i actually worked there just before british steel closed it.. the photographer is brian aris who confirmed the striking photo was at grangemouth gives me the chills xx

  • Thanks man, appreciate you guys backing me up

  • It is indeed about Corby -- Stuart made that clear in an interview in Melody Maker. Lots of Scots folk went to work in Corby, told they had jobs for life, but Thatcher closed it down.

  • Thanks Andrew, much appreciated.

  • @andrewjcraig Thatcher was a bitch..

  • Thats Ravenscraig steel plant in the background in the opening picture! It was announced it would be closed not that long before this album came out,Throwing thousands of men onto the dole!It was actually running at a profit but the torie government of the time wanted to break the power of the unions!I always assumed that was something to do with this song!

  • sheer genius.

  • cud not agree more.........happy 50th stu god rest..

  • I've mentioned it somewhere else here....but this song gets better each time I listen to it.The beat, the lyrics, the fans boucing around (on another link)....Simply AWESOME!

  • Best version of Steeltown,i have it on my mp3 with the volume on high, pisses the other passengers on the bus off but who cares.

  • if i was on the bus i'd rip your earphones out and stick them in my ears if i heard this song playing. i do alot of fitness, i can run twice as fast and lift twice as much when this version is blasting i my ears

  • Stuart rest in peace mate....

  • woooo i am from corby, this song rocks

    lol yay were famous

great group, great music, brilliant song :)

  • hey there, thanks for your post. Did you know that Stuart,Tony,Bruce and Mark's song was about your town?

  • i did and boy aint i proud :D

  • Corby? Motherwell was noted as the steel production capital of Scotland, nicknamed Steelopolis, with its skyline dominated by the water tower and three cooling towers of the Ravenscraig steel plant which, after a 10 year battle, was closed by the Government in 1992. The Ravenscraig plant had one of the longest continuous casting, hot rolling steel production facilities in the world before it was decommissioned. The closure of Ravenscraig signalled the end of large scale steel making in Scotland.

  • Thats what I read anyway, apparently it's like a little pocket of Scotland as many scots moved there when the mill was built and it is still full of scots accents. I could be wrong but I definitely read that Corby was the town behind the song. Thanks for the message,

    Cheers,

  • Hi timj41, where is Corby? Where did you read it? Not that it really matters, great music, fantastic band and the best version of Steeltown I've heard. You're a favourite ;-) Thanks for posting. I take it you're a fan too :)))))

  • I will find it on Google earth and e/mail you the place holder. Yes I am a fan, kevseabass's posting was the best as it's the live clip. great crowd, huge loss and a great guy from all accounts

  • hi again, it;s in Northhanptonshire, type it into Google earth corby,uk and it takes you straight there, I dont think the Steeltown sleeve photo was taken there, that looks more like a power station to me.

    Cheers,

  • This song to me is more likely about the Ravenscraig steel plant in Motherwell! This album was released about a year after British Steel anounced its closure...Throwing thousands of men out of work! The factory was actually running at a profit but the Torie government of the time wanted to break the power of the unions!
