@bearnurse1 And at our church we still have the old red hymnals and we aint gonna change. I don't like the new music. The old is much more beautiful. :)
A 53 yr old Lutheran from Michigan here. In my life I've been both LCMS and ELCA. I hear this hymn more in LCMS than ELCA. I really don't understand why there can't be just one all inclusive Lutheran hymnal. But I guess a six thousand page volume would be difficult to fit in pew racks. lol
A lot of people said the same thing when we switched from the red hymnal to the blue one. It's only natural that the same sort of resistance be met in the switch to the burgundy one. (It's always interesting that we refer to our hymnals by color in most cases.)
This has been one of my favorite hymns. On Maunday Thursday, 1957 in Holy Cross Lutheran Church in St. Louis, MO, I made my first Holy Communion. We sang all 15 verses during the distribution of Communion. There were 44 of us 8th graders that night who made our first communion. It has been many years since I have heard the hymn. It was a pleasure to hear it here once more. Thanks.
Just sang this tonight (Holy Thursday) as my 11 year old made his First Communion! It is this sort of hymn which, personally, keeps me grounded in my Lutheran roots and in my faith. Glad to see it here...thanks!
I am 15 and a lutheran in kansas, and i am starting to play hymns for our church on sundays. and i really love this song but can not play it on the organ yet

It is #315 in the Lutheran Hymnal, published in 1941. It's also in the LBW.
