God,I would have sold my grandmother to gypsies to see this play.I do know for a fact they filmed a performance,I just wish they would show it on PBS or something.
Vivien Leigh mastered this part and perhaps due to her own personal struggles she was able to convey that breaking point of mental exhaustion that existed in Blanche. Blanchett gives an excellent performance but it didn't top Leigh's performances.
@oneilcassandra To me it was a matter of a slight difference in interpretation and emphasis, Cates approach to the part was more earthy and her choice to emphasise Blanches alcoholism and the strain of her inner battle were articulated to perfection, whereas Viviens performance was always teetering on madness and psychosis, both performances have illuminated this part far better than any others I have ever seen
"That performance was as naked, as raw and extraordinary and astonishing and surprising and scary as anything I've ever seen, and it didn't have anything to do with what clothes she took off, you know what I mean?
She took the layers of a person and just peeled them away.
I thought I'd seen that play, I thought I knew all the lines by heart, because I've seen it so many times, but I'd never seen the play until I saw that performance."
@oneilcassandra Or take Jane Fonda's take on it: "I saw Cate in “Streetcar Named Desire” on Wednesday night. Liv Ullman directed it. I will say right here that it was perhaps the greatest stage performance I have ever seen"
Leigh's performance was brilliant but I feel Cate mastered this part. Part of what Cate does unique from Vivien is acknowledge the musicality of each line. She invested much more into the language and making Blanche's ache much more relatable than Leigh's all-out madness
Cate and Liv and incredible actresses. I'm surprised on Liv only been nominated for an academy award only twice considering all the movies she'd done with Bergman. She was great in all of them. My favorites from Liv are Shame and Scenes From a Marriage. Hope they give an honorary award and soon!!
Fuck Off Cate Blanchett! Stick Julia Gillard and Bob Browns "Fresh Air Trading" that you support, back up your ugly ass! Stupid Cunt! You've disowned Australia! Your a traitor to this nation, stupid cunt!
See Trine Dyrholm in "Troubled Water" and "In a Better World" and see LIVE ULLMAN WORK in Scenes from a Marriage, The Emigrants, The New Land, Persona (she owned the screen without words". Cate is right at the heels of Streep and Dyrholm and Ullman. She is amazing. Still has some work to go to be in the top 10!
I lived in New York when this played at BAM and the ticket prices were very reasonable (compared to Broadway, where you can easily pay over $200 for mediocre seats)...only bad thing was that it sold out almost instantly and I couldn't get tickets :( ( ( ( ....I was so pissed. Love Cate and Liv though!
Besides, Broadway is all about commerciality and this production bypassed all of that. These tix were NOT that expensive compared to what you pay to see a play on Broadway. Gallery seats were going for what? 35-40 dollars or so? That's NOTHING!!!
This show was the most powerful production I have ever witnessed in my life. If Cate didn't convince everyone that she is arguably the best actress of all time (next to Streep), then I don't know what crack you were smoking! She had everyone floored! 7 standing ovations in New York is unheard of & she deserved every single one!
@fumbler22 Well Liv Ullmann is the best actress ever... Period. Cate is working her way up to top three or four. I would put Streep fourth or fifth on the list of best actress ever.
And then we keep "worshiping" people who we love but seem to have no idea how hard and expensive for us to see them in a show like that. Unfortunately, theater has become an extremely extravagant commodity in this country. And some producers still dare complain that they can't get their "profits." Yeah, right?
Even if you only go two or three times a year, $90 isn't that much money, most people spend a lot more than that on a night out! I don't think it was that expensive at all, and worth it to see this great work beautifully acted and directed, theatre actors get paid a very average wage, would you rather they were paid much less so you can get a cheaper ticket!
I only hope the producers agree to take this to Broadway. And if they don't, then Channel Thirteen should show the taping some time later. Like they did with 'Cats' and others.
It won't be going to Broadway, it has nothing to do with producers, both Cate and Liv have other commitments and have started on other projects, Cate here in Sydney running the Sydney Theatre Company and Liv is getting ready to do 'A Long Days Journey into Night' back home in Norway, don't count on it being filmed either!
Actually the play was filmed onstage, but God knows if their ever going to show it.They should show it this year, being Tennessee Willians centennial,I sooooo want to see it.
My favorite actress of then played in the original and my favorite actress of today plays in the remake. Life is good.

@oneilcassandra I will trust Meryl Streep's opinion:
"That performance was as naked, as raw and extraordinary and astonishing and surprising and scary as anything I've ever seen, and it didn't have anything to do with what clothes she took off, you know what I mean?
She took the layers of a person and just peeled them away.
