But out of the two, which goalie was much closer giving the Vancouver Canucks their first ever Stanley Cup in their franchise history?
Kirk McLean. Why? Captain Kirk's Canucks had to come from behind from 3-1 down twice in 1994, won a series vs. the Flames and heartbreaking lost to the Rangers 4-3 when they lost 3-2 in Game 7.
Roberto Luongo? He lost his Game 7 4-0 to the Bruins and almost blew a series against the Blackhawks when his Canucks were up 3-0.
@joesakic91 Luongo got shutout by the bruins but it wasn't his fault, how could the highest scoring team in the league not score a SINGLE goal in game 7? This is why the criticism against luongo isn't fair. Whenever he wins games, he never gets any appreciation but when the team loses a game, everyone blames luongo, even if they get shutout 1-0
Again, when the highest scoring team in the league doesn't score a SINGLE goal in game 7, the blame should fall on ALL the canucks, not just luongo.
But Roberto Luongo had back-to-back poor games including Game 7. Game 6 vs. the Bruins, Lu gave up three goals on 8 shots. Game 7, he completely lost it.
Sure, the offense has to share the blame, but Luongo is the highest paid goaltender in the NHL with a long-term contract with the Canucks, he has to play better than those two pathetic performances in Games 6 and 7 against the Bruins.
@joesakic91 Actually, Luongo is NOT the highest paid goalie in the league, luongo's cap hit is 5.333 million while Henrik Lundqvist has a cap hit of 6.875 million. But again, he can't really win game 7 of the cup finals without any of the forwards getting even one goal.
the odd thing is with todays goalies, and their pro-fly technique, that would have been a standard pad save. but in 1994, that WAS and is a sensational save.
not the best I've seen. The best save I have seen would be last year's playoffs against LA Kings in the OT. Luongo fell on the ice on his back and he caught the puck while he was watching the puck upside down. Later on we won that game.
What a save that was. It looked like the Calgary Flames were going to win that one. It was marvelous concentration on Kirk McLean's part on how the passes were going to be made and who was going to take the shot. That team didn't win the Stanley Cup, but they came so close and they were THE most talented Canucks team I have ever seen.
i'll never forget this! i was there with my bro watching it in our basement in west van and we thought it was over for us... we need a couple of those this playoffs and we'll go far!
@GiantsHky Because the Canucks didn't win the Stanley Cup. If they had beaten the Rangers in '94, you bet they would have retired McLean's number. Remember Game 1 in MSG when Captain Kirk made like 50 saves to steal game 1? That playoff run was a showcase of McLean's talent and he got the Canucks as close to a Stanley Cup as you can get without actually winning it.
@wkozaa123 No, he was nicknamed Captain Kirk after the guy from Star Trek. He wasn't literally our captain for two reasons. 1. Linden was captain. 2. Goalies aren't allowed to be. McLean was never our captain, Luongo was the 1st goalie captain in the NHL since Bill Durnan back in I believe the 50s.
@CanuckFan96 also, a great save isn't just the save itself, its the timing in the game, season, playoffs and how the save can shift momentum for a team
Kirk McLean >>>>>> Roberto Luongo

@joesakic91 Actually, if you check FACTS then you would see that statistically Luongo is better than McLean. Stop making stupid assumptions.

How come Kirk McLean was never charged with grand larceny after that save? Haha.

Unbelievable. When Luongo retires, they should do a double retirement. :)

CAPTAIN KIRK

the reason this is number one because at the time 98% of goalies were stand ups and were really hard to do that thats what makes this save so unique
