NYC in the 40's was at its zenith. This is when NYC was the biggest manufacturing center in US, the biggest shipping city, HQ for large number of the Fortune 500 corps. (more than today), HQ for network radio, center of live entertainment, publishing, culture etc. We're still on top in terms of media, finance, fashion - but we've lost a lot.
