Jasmine guy has Lupus first of all so you should be careful of what you speak. Vanessa williams just has bad skin and Mariah Carey's skin isn't wrinkled at all. I have plenty light skinned people in my family including myself. My mother is 57 and my father is 60 and they don't have not one wrinkle on their skin. It is true black doesn't crack but a lot has to do with how you take care of your skin as well. People really need to be ware of what they speak for fear of sounding ignorant.
The shopkeeper scene is one of my favorite scenes of this whole movie...The old man taught the young man some valuable lessons in just a short amount of time. The youth today seem like they dont care about the history, they just want to party. Know thyself !!!
for all those commenting on rowell's age..you have to remember people aged faster than they do now...so someone in their 50s 300 years ago, would look like in their 70s
Good Lord!! If I was one of the aristocrats attending a quadroon ball and saw Victoria Rowell looking the way she does with the girl she accompanied. I would be cautious of wanting to impregnate the girl. Geesh! She aged like hell!! LMBO!! Imagine waking up like 15 years later, rolling over and looking at the girl!! What the hell would she look like? I would think they had bad genes running through their family! My grandmother lived to be 72 and never, ever!!, looked like that! LMBO!!! Wooo!
@nikki72fly like they say, black don't crack. Look at Victoria, Vanessa Williams, Mariah Carey and Jasmine Guy in real life now in their 40-50s. Those Caucasian genes are kicking in big time, especially when you are 1st generation bi-racial. Most of us who are just lite skinned cause of slavery/placage and just getting lite skin genes don't age like 1st gen bi-racials
Rev 13:10 He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.
@sonaliegh In the book, taunte Josette(Victoria) gets to america w/Cecille as a little girl, Josette is probably in her 30s - she is educated & been to Europe cause she partied w/plantation owners before the revolution. So by when Cecille is a teen, she is pushing 50. Cecille is with Old Dazincourt almost 10yrs & none of their kids live - so that brings her to 60 . The book says Cecille managed to "catch" Phillippe when she was 28-which is old maid in their days. Marcelle/Marie who are teens ...
@sonaliegh ...put Cecille in her 40s, and Josette in the 70s so she was a ripe old age and still kicking. Haitian Revolution ended 1791-1803, the main part of the story is in the 1840s so that would add at least 35+yrs to whatever age Josette was in the beginning.
I love watching this movie- It could have been set in my house. I live in the neighborhood this movie was set in, in a house built in 1820 by a prominant Free Man of Color.
@SoYahYah You know, I wish i could answer that question for you but I'm really not sure, maybe it will say later in the movie. However I DO understand your comment, I'm not even white and I was wondering the same thing. I was like what the fuck omg their killing children too ? Damn dude that's fucked up what the fuck did the children do to anybody.
@SoYahYah The blacks and slave were revolting against their masters and their families.........remember how the American Army killed all the Indians and their families in the west?
@SoYahYah It was the haitiian revolution - about that time all of the slaves on carribean islands started revolting against slave owners. There is a book called "The Book of Night Women" about one mini revolt on Jamaica, and if you think slavery on the mainland was bad ... just like slaves didn't want to be sold "down river" "deep south" you did not want your master to take you to New Orleans and sell you to Haiti or Jamaica to sugar cane or rice fields ...
@Lapreghiera How is taunte really related to whatsherface-Josie? Was Josie's mom an African slave with a white Slave master daddy. Or was josie's mom a free person of color? I saw the movie but was really confused with the family story line.

why did they age victoria rowell that much? Her nephew looks about 18 here. Shouldn't she be in her 50s not 70s at this point?
